The Southwest lost one of its finest gentlmen and Bill McGaw, editor of the
Southwesterner, one of his warmest friends when Udall Adams (better kno'Wn as
Mike) Tenhey died March 4 of a .heart attack at his home In Prescott, Ariz. Mike
was born on May 22, 1901, at Colonia Dublan,' Chihuahua, and, being a Mormon,
was in the Latter Day Saints Exodus from there in 1912, shortly after the
outbreak of the Madero Revolution. Arriving in El Paso, with hundreds of other
refugees, Including George Romney, present governor of Michigan, young Mike sold
the Morning Times and the Evening Herald on the streets of El Paso for nearly a
year to help his family. The Tenhey's moved to Thatcher, Ariz., in early 1913
and came to southern, N.M., in 1915, where Mike and his father worked on the
USRS canal from Elephant Butte Dam to upper valley. (Mike's father contracted
all of the grading of the road between Columbus and Deming, back in 1892 when
that stretch of roadbed was originally laid down for a railroad contemplated to
run from Utah and Colorado, through New Mexico and into old Mexico, linking up
with the Mormon colonies in Chihuahua.) After attending public school at
Thatcher and Cactus, Ariz., Mike helped Edmund Richardson round up and drive his
cattle to Safford when he sold out his ranch to the U Bars, then owned by E.K.
Warren, in 1915. Mike then worked on ranches around the Graham Mountains in 1916
and 1917 and during the latter part of 1917 he went to work for Lines Dairy,
Morenci, Ariz., and remained there until 1918, when he moved to Columbus and
worked as a plumber for nearly a year, moving to Hachita in 1919. There, he was
employed by the El Paso and Southwest Railroad. In 1920 and '21, Mike worked for
Cattle Inspector R.B. Faulkner and Dave and Tom Baker, then in 1922 he cowboyed
for W.J. Wamel. Moving back to Douglas, Mike again went into the dairy business
and late in 1923 he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he had a battery and
automotive electrical shop for two years. Mike worked for the P.E. railroad from
1925 to 1929, and in 1930 he was In Tucson, where he was employed by the
Home Ice and Coal Co., until 1933, when he went back into his own dairy
business. Times were difficult, so Mike returned to Los Angeles and the P.E.
railroad in January, 1936, but within just a few days he swftched to the Santa
Fe railroad, Arizona division, as section foreman. He was promoted to track
supervisor in 1941, assistant road-master in 1943, roadmaster in 1946 and moved
to Prescott as roadmaster in 1955, retiring on May 1, 1963. Mike visited in
Columbus many times over the years, and after his retirement he was in THE
SOUTHWESTERNER office every two or three months and wrote many fine articles for
this publication, one of which is appearing in this issue. Mike is survived by
his widow, Mae, who lives in Prescott; a sister, Mrs. Millicent McKelIar of
Tempe, Ariz.; and three brothers, Pratt, Boise, Idaho; Meshach A., and Allen D.
of Chino, Calif. Few people knew Mesh Tenney, the world's famous trainer and
thoroughbred raiser (remember Swaps?) was Mike's brother, Meshach. Mesh, with
Rex Elsworth, recently purchased the U Bars ranch, the same ranch from which
young Mike helped Ed Richardson trail his cattle to Safford in 1915. During the
Madero Revolution many Mormon families lived in the southern portion of the U
Bars and the land just below it. Mike loved the Southwest, was related to many
of the finest people living in this area, including Fay Adams, who was
admittedly the greatest roper and all-around cowboy America ever produced, and
Mexico Bill Adams, living in upper Valley El Paso today. Mike wrote us many
stories, all authentic accounts and many of them were events in which he had
participated. The story of the Parker train robbery is one. We only wish Mike
were here to know we printed it. Maybe he'll know anyway.
