SAAVEDRA: Gilbert ;, Chavez Saavedra, 68, a resi- - dent of Silver City, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Jan. 6, at his home. He was born March 2, 1930, in Al- buquerque to Anastacio and Rosa (Chavez) Saavedra. He was a retired Phelps Dodge auto mechanic and had served in the U.S. Army. Calling hours will be from 5- 7 p.m. Sunday at Baca's Funeral Chapels, where the prayer vigil will begin at 1pm, Decon Bill Holguin will recite the holy rosary. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rod,^ Nichols officiating. The rite of committal and burial will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Veterans honors will be accorded by local veterans groups. He is survived by his wife, Virginia M. Saavedra of Silver City; and three brothers, Ben Saavedra and his wife, Elsie, of Albuquerque, Manuel Saavedra and his wife, Dolly, of Los Angeles, and Joe. Saavedra and his wife, Linda, of Belen. Casket bearers will be Ricardo Hernandez, Jesus Vega, Ray Abeyta Jr., and Ronnie. Anthony and Adam Martinez. Honorary bearers are Cipriano Martinez, Jimmy Rodriguez, and Ben and Joe; Saavedra. Saavedra: Beatrice Saavedra, 84, a resident of Fort Bayard, passed away Monday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She is survived by three sisters, Virginia Saavedra of Clairmont, Calif.,Alvita Saavedra of Truth or Consequences, and Sophie Beaty of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two brothers, Tom Saavedra of Santa Clara, Calif., and Buddy Saavedra of Cupertino, Calif. Graveside services were conducted today at 1 p.m. in the Fort Bayard State Cemetery with Deacon Johnny Perez officiating. Arrangements were by the Wheeler Funeral Home.Saborio: A funeral mass was said Feb. 1 at the Santa Clara Catholic Church for Pedro P. Saborio who died here Monday. Rosary was recited in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel the previous evening. Interment was in the Fort Bayard cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Paul Ragazinskas officiating. Mr. Saborio is survived by two sons, three daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren Saborio: Socorro Gomez Saborio, 71, a lifetime Hurley resident, entered eternal rest Sunday evening at her home. she was born Sept. 29, 1919, in Santa Rita. She was a member of the Catholic Church, and was a homemaker. Calling hours will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels, where the vigil service will be held at 7. The funeral liturgy service will be held Thursday morning at 10 in the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Mike Lindsay officiating. The committal rite service will follow in the Hurley Cemetery, where she will belaid to rest. Survivors include her husband, Pedro Saborio of Hurley; one son, Manuel Saborio and his wife, Beda, of Hurley; and four daughters, Melinda Gonzalez and her husband, Alfonso, of Hurley, Natalia Saborio Lucero and her husband Ross, of Hurley, Patricia Fierro and her husband, Crespin, of Columbus, and Rose Norero and her husband, Bob, of Hurley. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren; five sisters, Olivia Rodriguez, Consuelo Espinosa, Eva Gomez, Nena Becerra and Olin Herrera; and numerous nieces and nephews. Casket bearers will be her granddaughters, Veronica Saborio, Louise Saborio, Melissa Gonzalez, Darlene Saborio, Cristina Fierro and Micaela Fierro. Honorary bearer will be Irma Valenzuela. Mrs. Shelley was born February 6, 1922 in San Antonio, Tx, the daughter of Joseph Bales and Bertha Handrick Kirkland. She was a communicant of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of San Antonio, and attended The Church of the Good Shepard of Silver City, the Jacob Bennett Chapter of the D.A.R., the Lasso's Club in high school and was active in the Cliff-Gila Grant County Fair Ass'n. for many years. Her devotion and contributions to that organization was reconized and acknowledged with a Rosemary Shelley Sabre Day during the 1975 Fair. She and her husband, Lawrence H. Shelley ranched for many years in the Cliff area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence H. Shelley October 6, 1972 and her son, Lawrence H. "Buster" Shelley September 15, 1973. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce "Tissie" Shelley Loomisof Bee Neb.; a son, Terrell Shelley of Cliff, NM; her mother, Bertha Bain of San Antonio, Tx; her stepmother, Margaret A. Hale of Silver City; a brother, Billy Kirkland of Roswell, NM; six grandchildren an one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Cliff, with interment at theGila-Mesa Cemetery, with the Rev. David Goble officiating at both services. Saenz and five sons.David Báldonado Saenz, 51, of Bayard, a native of Alamogordo who bad lived in Grant County for 22 years, died Sunday at Hillcrest General Hospital, He was a retired Kennecott Copper Corp. employee, and had ‘worked with the Bayard City Police Department the past year. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary R. Saenz of Bayard; three daughters, Mrs John E. Narvais of Los Vegas, Nev., Mrs Edward M. Ativarez of Hurley and Mrs. Robert L, Casatillo of Bayard; eight grandchildren; his father, Jesus M. Saenz of El Paso; four brothers, Samuel B. Saenz of Silver City; Earnez B. Senz and Eliglo Garcia Jr. SAENZ: Dr. Paul Saenz, 58, passed away Monday, April 17, after a long and painful bout with cancer. He was born April 1, 1942, to Paul B. Saenz and Guadalupe "Lupe" Fierro Saenz. At the time of his death, he resided in Arlington, Va., with his wife, Geraldine. A memorial service will be held in Arlington on Wednesday. His ashes will later be? brought to Silver City for a memorial service. Final interment will be in the Fierro-Saenz family plot. Mrs. Mercedes M. Saenz, 52, passed away at her residence in Bayard November 8 following’ an extended illness. Mrs.. Saenz was- a native of Bisbee,Arjz. and had lived in Bayard for the past 50 yéars. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas, and had been a resident of El Paso for 40 years. He had retired from Chevron USA in California. He is survived by his wife, Luz L. Saenz; his daughters, Esther S. Rosales and Helen S. Perez; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest L. Saenz Jr. and Yolanda, Edward L. and Isabel Saenz, and Sam L. and Barbara Saenz; his brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert B. and Lucy Saenz; a sister-in-law, Mary R. Saenz resided in El Paso for the past 11 years after retiring from Kennecott Copper Corporation where he had worked for 30 years as a powder man. Mrs. Dolores Saenz survives her husband, and four sons, Samuel B. Saenz of Silver City, Earnest B. Saenz of Los Algeles, Ralph B. Saenz of Bayard and Gilbert B. Saenz of El Paso; 18 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Saenz of Alamogordo and Jose Saenz of Los Angeles; and two sisters, Mrs. N. P. Salcido and Mrs.. Angwl Ortega of Alamogordo. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Catholic Church at Alamogordo, followed by burial there.Samuel B. Saenz, 84, beloved father, entered into eternal rest Wednesday at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born in Alamogordo on Oct. 17, 1907, to Jesus Saenz and Dolores Baldonado. He was the oldest of six boys. The family moved to Santa Rita during his early years. He attended "Sully" School and graduated from Hurley High School. After graduation, he worked as a timekeeper for the Santa Rita mine until the closure of the mine during the 1930s. He married Gertrudis "Tula" Chavez in 1931. After the closure of the mine, he worked as a supervisor for the Work Projects Administration and then worked for several years for the Soil Conservation Service. He continued his employment as a postal worker for the Silver City post office, retiring in 1972 after 30 years of service. He was a charter member of the first League of United Latin American Citizens council of Grant County and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was one of the first lectors for St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, "Tula," in January, 1989. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, David, Paul and Ralph Saenz. He is survived by a son, Oscar Saenz and his spouse, Dora, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and two daughters, Lillian Parra and her spouse, Ernest, and Irma Trejo and her spouse, Herb, of Silver City. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Capt. Paul Parra and Sheryl of Omaha, Neb., MaryAnn Parra of Houston; Ronald Trejo and Darlene of Mesa, Ariz., Lillian Trejo of Sheton, Wash., Linda Trejo and Sam Trejo of Albuquerque, Kathy Saenz and Allen of Decatur, Del., Mike Saenz and Jan of Austin, Texas, Danny Saenz of Austin, and Drs. Suzanne Saenz and John of Amarillo, Texas. He is also survivied by two great-grandchildren, Matthew Paul and Caitlin Parra of Omaha; and two brothers, Gilbert Saenz and Lucy, and Ernest Saenz and Luz, of El Paso, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. David Saenz of Bayard; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mr. Saenz was born in Alamogordo and was a lifelong resident of Grant County. I It’ was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. He was a retired employee of Chino mones where he was employed from 1945-1977; was a member of the Office Profesional Employees International Union #62; was a member of the Cobre school board for 12 years and was a charter member of the Chino Federal Credit union who served as a credit committee member for several years. Mr Saez is survived by his wife Valentina P Saez of Bayard; two daughters, Irene Garcia and her husband Eligio, of Bayard and Mary Madrano and her husband Benito Ricardo of bayard; two sons, Ralph M and his wife Josie of Bayard and Larenzo saez of Bayard; two step daughters, Lucy P Soliz of Belgium ands Barbara P Perez of Moreno CA; two stepsons Edward P Arias of Houston TX and Robert P Dean of Bayard; three brothers, Samual B Saez of Silver city, and Earnest B saez and Gilbert B Saez both of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren, Elias Garcia, Daniel Garcia, Alex Garcia, Ralph Saenz III, Jesus Saenz, Charles Saenz; Theresa Mercy Saenz, Michelle Saenz, and Ricardo Medrano. Mr. Safford, a former newspaperman, had been public relations director at Kennecott for the past 21 years. He is survived by his wife, Irma, and one son, Stephen of Silver City. Funeral arrangements were handled by Curtis-Bright Funeral Home.Sage: Major General Charles G. Sage, one of the most distinguished leaders in New Mexico military history and commander of the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment on Bataan during the early days of World War II, died Saturday in St. Vincent Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He was 71 years old. General Sage's military career spanned 40 years from the time he enlisted in the Texas National Guard in 1917 until he retired as New Mexico adjutant general in July 1957. Even after retirement he remained interested in military affairs, and during 1960 he served as a representative on the American Battle Monuments Commission at the Dedication of the U.S. Military Cemetery at Ft. William McKinley in Manila, P.I., and at the Presidio of San Francisco. General Sage's greatest glory came in a losing cause: the battle for Bataan and the fall of the Philippines to the Japanese in early 1942 during the opening days of World War II. He spent nearly 3 1/2 years following the fall of the Philippines as a prisoner of war on Formosa, in Japan and later in Manchuria, where he was liberated in August 1945. Last year Sage and his wife and one of their two daughters went to the Far East, and he re-visited the places where he had been held prisoner on Formosa and in Japan. General Sage was a former publisher of the Deming Headlight. Funeral services were held at Santa Fe. Burial was in the National Cemetery with full military honors.Saiet: Beatrice P. Saiet, 83, died Saturday in Houston, Texas. Mrs Saiet was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star and is survived by her son, Fred Saiet, of Silver City; her daughter, Billie Saiet Mason and her husband, Guy, of Houston; and grandchildren Mark Mason and Michelle Mason of Houston. Funeral Services were held Monday in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors with the Rev. Douglas B. Skinner officiating. Intermentwas made in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. Saige: James H. Saige died on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Ft. Bayard Medical Center following as extended illness. Mr. Saige was born on Jan. 20, 1910 in Longmont, Colo., the son of Thomas William and Mary Frances Graham Saige. In 1937, he moved to Santa Rits, N.M., employed by Kennecott Copper Corp. as a carpenter. By the time he retired from the position of supervisor in 1967, his sturdy buildings, moved to accomodats an expanding mine, had been relocated throughout Grant County. A pioneer aviator, he put his hobby to work as a member of the civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the church boards of both the Santa Rita Community Center, and later the First United Methodist Church in Silver City, which he joined following a move to Silver City in 1961. He belonged to the Santa Rita Masonic Lodge #44. In addition, he was a member of the Camp Thunderbird Committee, assisting in the building of the camp from inception in 1947. He was preceded in death by his wife, theresa Peper Saige, in 1979. He is survived by two sons, Vance E. Saige of Vienna, Va. and Gerald C. (Jerry) Saige of Silver City,: and by grandchildren Dru and Kelly Saige of Vienna, Va. Scott, MerriLee and Julie Sage of Silver City. Services were held this morning at 10 a.m. at the First Methodist Church of Silver City with the Rev. David Saucier officiating. Interment will follow in the Memory lane Cemetery with graveside services conducted by the Santa Rita Masonic Lodge #44. Saige of Silver City, two sons, Vance E. Mr. Saiz served in World War I and was a member of the Central American Legion Post. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maria Saiz; a daughter, Mrs. Eva S. Abalos, Bayard; two sons, Roger and Pablo, Central, and five grandchildren. Born in 1884 at Webber Falls Ok, which at that time was a part of the Cherokee Strip, indian territory, he came west by wagon train at the age of 16, locating in alma and mogollon, where he was employed in a saw mill operated by uncle Harry Herman. Later on he went to Boyle Heights Calif., where he worked in a brick yard. Returning to mogollon, he married Sarah Ellen roberts Aug 30, 1910, and became the blacksmith in the mining town. For several years he drove the mail team from Silver City to Glenwood for Ernest Bennett. He is survived by two daughters Mrs. witta Ann Salars of Laguna N.M. and Miss Martha Jane McDonald a student at New Mexico A&M College. Other members of the family are a sister Mrs. Jane McDonald Mortenson, of Blyth Calif., his two brothers; Barley and Johnny, white Signal, and six grandchildren. Mrs. Salars was an active member of the Silver City Chapter #3 Order of Eastern Star since 1944 and also of the Rebecca Lodge since 1925 and a long time member of the Whitewater Home ExtensionClub. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Ves Salars, on April 1,1958 and by her daughter, Elizabeth Gillespie on June 16, 1976. She taught school in Lordsburg for a year and then taught for 15 years in the Silver Consolidated School System as a first grade teacher at Sixth Street School. She was a member of the St. Francis Newman Center, the National Education Association, Silver Education Association and Minority Caucus, and was a dedicated teacher and mother. He was former director of El Grito Head Start program of Silver City, and was conventions and visitors director for the Albuquerque Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Salaz was appointedin 1981 to two terms as Grant County maanager, after which, he and his father worked as small-business consultants. In 1985, he moved to Arizona, where he served two years as town manager and police commissioner for the town of Guadalupe. He later worked for OK Community, a Phoenix organization that provides counseling for juvenile offenders. In 1988, Mr. Salaz was named development associate for the Central Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross until his illness forced him to retire. In the early l920s, the Salcido family immigrated to the United States, settling in the Mesilia Valley, where Pablo Salcido farmed land and Louis Salcido attended school at Mesilla Park Elementary. In June 1940, he moved to Morenci to work with Phelps Dodge, returning to Tortugas in August of the same year to marry his fiancee, Isabel “Chavela” Montoya. The couple returned to Morenci to raise their formerly. In 1942, he was drafted into the U~S. Army and served his country honorably during World War II, with service in California, Germany and France. After his tour of duty, he returned to Morenci to again work at Phelps Dodge and retired in 1983 after 42 years of service’~ After his retirement, Mr. Salcido and his wife moved to Silver City, where he was a devoted member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Mr. was also member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3347, El Ultimo Hombre and El Beneficio Propio in Morenci. The report from the Sherriffs office blamed the accident to accesive speed. Refugio Salvidar died of afractured skull and internal injuries. The driver of the car Jesus Avalos, was reported to be in fair condition at Hillcrest Hospital, although he was suffering from a brain concussion. The third passenger of the car was Jesse Rincon of Hanover. She was born June 2, 1938, in Lordsburg, ' one in the fifth generation of western New Mexicans. Judge Salinas never walked, but with the love of relatives and friends she soon learned that a crippled physical condition did not mean that the mind is also crippled. That was her code to live by be- , cause, as she had said before, "I can do anything anyone else can do as long as I am aware of my limitations" (of which she had few). She spent 21 years of her life in Carrie Tingley Hospital for crippled children. Later, she attended Lordsburg High School and graduated in 1958 with her friends. After graduation, she attended St. Mary's Academy in Silver City, where she completed a secretarial course. Opportunity led her to the Lordsburg Police Department, where she was a radio dispatcher for six years, and later with the Hidalgo County Sheriffs Department for 3 1/2 years. n 1970, at the urging of family and friends, she ran or the position of magistrate judge and overcame her oposition to take office in 1971. With integrity and compassion, she served as magistrate judge of Hidalgo County from 1971 to 1991. She is survived by her mother, Rosa Talavera Morelos of Lordsburg; her sisters, Cecilia Rice of Lordsburg and Eva Romero of Tucson, Ariz.; her broth- ers, Alt Salinas of Lordsburg, and Rosendo and Alvino Salinas, and Nick T. Morejos, all of Tucson; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He often recounted how the destroyer sank 22 enemy ships during World War II and downed an unknown number of enemy aircraft. He enjoyed his annual reunions with the remaining shipmates of the -USS Dunlap. His daughter, LuAnn Sanchez of Gila, and a brother, Napo Sanchez of Silver City, survive Mr. Sanchez. Sanchez: Patricio Serafin Sanchez, 74, a resident of Silver Ctiy since 1969, entered life eternal Tuesday morning at his residence.He was born May 21, 1919, to the late Juan Bautista and Louisa Ulibarra Sanchez in Duran, N.M. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture in 1940 from New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts in Las Cruces. He then worked for the U.S. Conservation Service between 1940 and 1951. Mr. Sanchez served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, and from 1948 until 1951, he was assigned to Bogota, Colombia, for the Corps of Engineers. He also attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, earning a bachelor of law degree in 1954 and a doctorof laws award in 1968. He served as assistant district attorney in Santa Fe before moving to Silver City, where he also served as assistant district attorny for several years before returning to the private practice of law throughout the state for 39 years. The memorial service will be held Friday morning at 11 at Baca's Funeral Chapels with David Strain officiating. Survivors include his wife, Carol of Silver City; two sons, Juan, a student at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, and Pablo, a captain in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in South Korea; a daughter, J. Mercedes Sanchez, and her husband, Harvey Jones, of Framingham, Mass.; a sister, Rita Minkin, and a brother, Ernest Sanchez, and his wife, Sefora, all of Albuquerue; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank, in 1988; his daughter, Bonnie, in 1949; and a granddaughter, Maasi Leah Sanchez Fisher in 1988. He was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Tucson, Ariz., and was retired from Phelps Dodge where he had been a security officer for 20 years. He was a member of the Penecostal Church. Evening prayer services will be held Thursday at 7 in the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church with concluding services to be held Friday morning at 10 in Memory Lane Cemetery. The Rev. W.W. Sanchez, 91, a Silver City resident, entered life eternal Friday at his residence. He was retired from Phelps Dodge. Mr. Sanchez was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was born May 31, 1902, in Silver City and was married for 56 years to Antonia Lujan Sanchez. Calling hours were held Sunday afternoon at Baca's Funeral Chapels. The prayer vigil was held at 7 in the evening at Baca's Funeral Chapels with Deacon Johnnie Perez reciting the rosary. The funeral liturgy was held Monday morning at 9 at St. Vincent's with the Rev. Rosary recitation was hled Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, at the Curtis-Bright Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be held this morning at 10 a.m. the San Isidro Catholic Churcch in Gila with Monsignor A. James Milano offficiating at both services. He was born Nov. 26, 1912, in Torreon Coahuila, Mexico, to Jose and Manuela Sanchez. After his marriage to Victoriana "Vicki" Ynostrosa in 1941, he resided in Bayard. He worked for Empire Zinc until his retirement. Calling hours for Mr. Sanchez are from 4-9 p.m., today in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels, where the evening services will be held at 7, with Isaac Villareal of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating.
