O’DONNELL: Jean O’Donnell, 95, of
Lordsburg passed away Friday at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home. Lordsburg Funeral
Home is in charge of services.
O’NEAL: Graveside funeral services were held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Reserve
Community Cemetery for Jerry Don O’Neal, 56, who died Feb. 2 near Valentine,
Neb. Mr. O’Neal, who was born April 25, 1942, in Plainview, Ark., was employed
by Keller Logging in Reserve. He was a family man who loved his children and
grandchildren, and who enjoyed guns, reloading, hunting and trapping. Mr. O’Neal
whose wife Ruth, passed away Nov. 19, 1996, is survived by his children, Betty
Schubauer of Valentine, Sherry Bellinger of Mission, S.D., and Darrel O’Neal of
Reserve; and grandchildren, Kelly, Brittany and Joshua Schubauer, Allen
Bellinger and Jerry and McKenzie O’Neal. He is~ also survived by his stepmother,
Nora Mae O’Neal of Reserve, and a brother, Bobby O’Neal of Joshua, Texas.
Arrangements were handled by Jewkes Mortuary of Springerville, Ariz.
OAKES: Mrs. Florence E. Oakes, a former resident of Silver ‘City, died Sunday in
Santa Rosa, California, at the age of 88~ She was born Aug. 2,’ 1866 in
Bushnell, Ill:, and moved with her parents in a covered wagon to Las Vegas, N.
M. when she was six years old. In October, 1888, she married the late Horace L.
Oakes and in 1889, they moved to Silver City where Mr. Oakes operated a printing
and commercial sign business until his death in 1923. Since then, Mrs. Oakes has
been making her home with her daughters in Arizona and California. She is
survived by a sister, Miss Ada Sparks of Las Vegas: three daughters, Mrs.
Ernestine Saner, Phoenix: Mrs. Ethel Harbauer, of Cajon, Calif., and Mrs. Muriel
O’Boyle, Santa Rosa, Calif.: six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all
living in California. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the
Hinman’s Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David Holt of the Church of the Good
Shepherd officiating. Pallbearers were: Harvey Forsyth, John McMillen, Henry---
OAKES: Mr. and Mrs. Dick Dozier of Silver City were called to Selma Alabama by
the death of Mrs. Dozier’s father, W. T. Oakes, 85, in the Baptist hospital
following an extended illness. Mr. Oakes is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mattie
Oakes of Selma, two daughters, Mrs. dozier and Mrs. Shields of Safford AZ; three
sons, William of Newton, Miss., James of Gallatin, Tenn., and tom of Lowville N
Y; 12 grandchildren, including Mrs. Ola Bookout of Bayard and nine
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Selma followed by burial.
OAKLEY: Bessie M. Oakley, 58, a resident of Silver City for the last four and a
half years, entered eternal rest early Sunday morning at her home. She was born
Jan. 15, 1933, in Wild County, Colo. She was a homemaker. Cremation by Baca's
Mimbres Crematorium has taken place. No services are planned. Survivors include
her husband, George Oakley of Silver City; a daughter, Marcia Kincaid and her
husband, Mike, of Gloucester, Va.; and a son, Ron G. Oakley of San Diego,
California. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Brandy and Michelle
Kincaid, and Marcia, Ron Oakley, Jr. and Gregory Oakley. Entrusted to the care
of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
OAKS: Nina Jane Oaks, 96 died Sunday at Fort Bayard. Mrs. Oaks was born in
Ballinger, Texas to Laura Conner and Theopolis Rabb. She graduated from high
school in Roswell where her parents were among the first settlers. She then
spent a year in Chicago studying music and voice. Upon her return to Roswell,
she married George Williams and one child was born. Mrs. Oaks lived most of her
life in California and was a talented artist on the hand loom. She spent the
last seven years in El Paso with her daughter, Dorothy, and in Gila with her
granddaughter Carolyn Stailey and was most recently a patient at Fort Bayard
Hospital. She marveled that in her lifetime she had seen a change from the
settler era to moon-walking astronauts. Mrs. Oaks was a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Gila. Ward and an active member of the P.E.O.
and several Weaving guilds in San Jose, Calif. Mrs. Oaks is survived by her
daughter, Dorothy Cooper (formerly Carroll) of El Paso; two sisters, Florence
Rabb, of Roswell and Morris of San Diego; three grandchildren, 10 great
grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. A funeral was held Wednesday
at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Gila Ward, with Bishop C.
C. Sullivan officiating. Interment followed at the Mesa Cemetery in Gila.
Serving is pallbearers were James Wilson,, Spike Wilson, Bob Rabb, Lester
Stailey, Gene Stailey and Gary Stailey. Honorary pallbearers were Toad Wilson,
John Stailey, Phil Dominguez, Ken Fairchild and John Lane. Arrangements are by
the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home in Silver City.
OATES: Funeral services were held at Russellville, Ark. on Monday for Mrs. Sarah
Elizabeth Oates, mother of Mrs. Frank Parrish of Silver City, who died at the
latter's home on Friday, April 21. Mrs. Oates was 78. Survivors are two
daughters, Mrs. Parrish and Miss Marie Oates of Ft. Smith, Ark.; two sons, Knox
Oates of Little Rock, Ark. and Wade Oates of Pottsville, Ark.; a brother, John
Teeter of Corpus Christi, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Lois Martin of Russellville; five
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The services were held in the
Pottsville, Ark. Presbyterian Church with interment in Pottsville.
OBERG: Jerry Rae Brown Oberg, 57, died Thursday in the Gila Medical Center. She
was born Sept 11 1927 in Santa Rita, the daughter of John H and Viola Brown. She
had been a lifelong resident of this area. She is survived by her husband Carl B
Oberg of Silver City; a daughter, Sharon Roberts of eagle AZ; a son Richard Lee
Oberg of Beaumont TX; three grandchildren, four sisters, one brother, and her
mother Viola Brown Rea of Silver City. She was a member of the Church of the
Nazarene and worked as a volunteer for Southwest New Mexico Services to
Handicapped children and Adults Inc. Memorial services were held today at 10am
in the Nazarene church with the Rev David Brown officiating. Donations can be
made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Curtis-Brown.
OBERG: Ernest Oberg, patient at Fort Bayard hospital, died Monday. He had made
Silver City his home for the past four years, coming here from Iowa for health
reasons. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Almeda Oberg, and two sons, Carl and
Harold, of Silver City. His remains were shipped to the family home in Pierson,
La, for funeral services and burial. Local arrangements are under the direction
of Cox funeral home.
O'BOYLE: Muriel C. O'Boyle, 89, died May 15 in Santa Rosa, Calif. She was a
native of Silver City. She is survived by her husband, Martin J. O'Boyle, of
Santa Rosa; two daughters, Eleanor A. Wilson of Woodland, Calif. and Rae
Campbell of Santa Rosa; six grandchildren, Pamela R. Thayer of Saratoga, Linda
W. Feary of Sacramento, James M. Wilson of Boise, Laura A. Simpson of Fairfax,
Darcy A. Marchetti, Dana R. Mortsen, and Martin E. Campbell, all of Santa Rosa;
and six great-grandchildren. Services were held May 17 at the Lafferty and Smith
Colonial Chapel in Santa Rosa. Interment followed at the Santa Rosa Memorial
Park. Donations maybe made in Mrs. O'Boyle's memory to the Council of Aging of

O’BRIEN: Roy E. O’Brien, 60, Western Field Secretary of the American Institute
of Mining, Metallurgical Hazard Petroleum Engineers, died Jan. 2 in Salt Lake
City, Utah. He was well known in Western mining circles and had many friends in
the Silver City mining area. Mr. O’Brien was appointed first Western field
secretary of the AIME in 1950 because of his wide practical experience in mining
in a number of Western states. He was born in Victor, Colo. July 3, 1898. He had
worked in coal mines at Dawson, N, M., copper mines in Mexico, was plant
superintendent of the Mountain City Copper Co. mine at Rio Tinto, Nev., and was
with the International Smelting and Refining Co. in Salt Lake City and the
phosphate division of Anaconda Copper Co. at Conda, Idaho. His widow survives.
O'BRIEN: Edna P. O'Brien, 87, a longtime resident of Central, died Saturday
evening in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was born Feb. 6, 1903, in San
Antonio, Texas, and had resided in the area the last 20 years. She was a member
of the Protestant Church and was a homemaker. Calling hours will be Wednesday
from 10 a.m. until noon in Baca's Heather Funeral Chapels of Lordsburg.
Graveside services will be Wednesday afternoon at 2 in the Mountain View
Cemetery in Lordsburg with the Rev. Coy Brewer officiating. Survivors include
her husband, Valentine F. O'Brien of Central; two sisters, Josephine Parson of
Lordsburg and Madeline Hicks of Globe, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Lavena
Rager of Pawhuska, Okla., Ray Lee Dees of Woodbridge, Va., Ronna Burch of
Portland, Ore., and Jerry Dees serving with the United States Navy. She was
preceded in death by two sons, Ray and Maburn Dees. Entrusted to the care of
Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
OCHELTREE: Arthur "Arturo" Ocheltree, 88, died April 11 in Nogales, Ariz., from
complications following a heart attack. A resident of Gila, he was born in
Riverside, Calif. He worked his way to China at age 15 and traveled to other
Asian countries before going to Europe to study engineering at the University of
Berlin. It was in Berlin that he first became interested in opera. He then went
to Paris where be studied for four years at the Pans Conservatory of Music.
Following his studies there, he went to Italy, where he began his lifelong study
of Italian grand opera, and, in 1934, made his professional operatic debut in
the opera "Sonambula." Mr. Ocheltree was tenor soloist in the Sacre Coeur
Cathedral in Paris, and was singing with the Paris Opera when the Nazis invaded
France during World War II. He was performing "Faust" in Montreal, Canada when
the United States entered the war. With his knowledge of Europe and fluency in
German, Italian and French, he worked for the Office of War Information, first
in the United States and later in Europe, interrogating prisoners of war and
working undercover for allied intelligence. Stationed in London during the Nazi
bombing, he broadcast for "Voice of America," transmitting to Nazi-occupied
countries in Europe. He returned to opera after the war, singing in Europe until
1957. His last performance was a concert in Vienna, Italy, at the Palazzo Ducal,
or Palace of the Duke. He also sang in concerts with the Boston Symphony, the
Pittsburgh Symphony and the New Orleans symphony. He last toured the United
States in 1950 in the lead tenor role of Don Jose in the opera "Carmen."
Professionally, Mr. Ocheltree was represented by the William Morris agency of
New York City. He first visited the Silver City area in 1936, traveling
horseback to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, later returning to
visit other sites in the area. Looking for a milder climate because of his
wife's asthma, he moved with his family to Hillsboro, then Deming. On a day trip
to the Catwalk in Glenwood, he with his family found and shortly thereafter
purchased the ruined Lyons and Campbell Ranch headquarters in Gila. The great
adobe mansion was the restoration project and challenge he sought to fulfill his
love of history and the decorative arts. The once-forgotten and abandoned ranch
headquarters is now a New Mexico Historic Site, and listed on the National
Registry of Historic Sites. Mr. Ocheltree most recently participated in the
Masters Revisited project at Western New Mexico University, working with music
students. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. A memorial
service attended by friends and family was held April 14 at the family home in
Gila. The eulogy was given by David Berry of Silver City. Musical performances
were by the Ladies' Fortnightly Bathing and Glee Society. Mr. Ocheltree is
survived by his wife, Bonnie, of the family home in Gila, a son, Tino, and his
wife, Dr. Moira Shannon, of Nogales; a son, Alex, and his wife, Robin, of Gila;
four grandchildren; and a niece, Dr. Janet Elderkin Azzoni of Venice, Fla.
Memorial donations can be sent to the Grant County Animal Shelter.
OCHOA: Alexander Ochoa, 72, a resident of Central, died Monday. He is survived
by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Ochoa. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at
the Curtis Mortuary chapel, followed by burial In the Central cemetery.
Conducting the rites was the Rev. Jimmy Denson of the Central Baptist Church
O'CONNER: William David O'Conner, 72, of Lordsburg, formerly of Rodeo, passed
away Friday at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home. Services are pending with Lordsburg
Funeral Home.
O'CONNOR: Velda L. O'Connor, 87, of Silver City entered eternal rest early
Monday morning at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born March 4, 1904, in
Port Huron, Mich., and had resided in Grant County for the past four years.
After her formal education, she taught school for a few years, and married. Mrs.
O'Connor was a homemaker. Calling hours will be from 5-8 Thursday evening in
Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June
11, in Brust Funeral Home in Lombard. Concluding services will follow in Chapel
Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Elmhurst, Ill., where she will be laid to rest
next to her husband Fern O'Connor, who predeceased her. Survivors include two
sons, George O'Connor of Cape Coral, Fla., and John O'Connor of Wheaton, Ill.;
two daughters, Sue Johnson of Champaign, Ill., and Diane Taebel of Hurley; 15
grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Homestead Rest Home in Silver City. Entrusted to the care of Baca's
Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
ODELL: Grover C. Odell, Silver City, veteran of the Spanish/American War and of
World War I, died last Friday in Las Vegas, N. M. He was a recent patient at the
Fort Bayard Veterans Hospital. Mr. Odell came to New Mexico in 1916, and served
in Gen. John J. Pershing’s Punitive Expedition In Mexico, Following his
discharge, he was employed by Kennecott Copper Corp. and by the Santa Fe
Railroad. He also served as head carpenter at Fort Bayard and as custodian at
Western New Mexico University. He retired 15 years ago. Survivors are his widow,
Mrs. Mary Odell, Silver City; and two sisters, Mrs. Kittie Rhodes, Houston,
Tex., Mrs. Rene Cecil, Wichita Falls, Tex., and a brother of Houston. Funeral
services were held Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the Curtis Mortuary Chapel with the
Rev. Kenneth E. Ford, of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Graveside
rites in the Silver City Cemetery were held by Silver Elks Lodge. Mr. Odell was
a member of Elks Lodge in Miami.
ODELL: Lita Odell, 77, a Silver City resident since December, 1992, entered life
eternal Monday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 22, 1916, in
California, and was an artist. Graveside services will be held Thursday
afternoon at 2 at Memory Lane Cemetery with Dan Gardiner officiating. Survivors
include one son, Craig Odell Comstock of Santa Monica, Calif.; a daughter, Nora
Deane Renneker of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; a sister, Abbie Odell Gardiner; and
a granddaughter, Lilly Moon Garcia. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral
Chapels.
O'DELL: Mary O'Dell, 94, a past resident of Hurley and a resident of Deming,
passed away late last night in Mimbres Nursing Home in Deming. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Grover O'Dell. She is survived by nine nieces and
nephews, Luther Lacy of Shasta, Calif., Ethel Myers of Lordsburg, Bernice Arnold
and Eriedell Harris, both of Las Cruces, Richard Dannelley, Edith Frost and
Robert Dannelley, all of Arenas Valley, Evelyn Phillips of Apache Junction,
Ariz., and Etta Jennings of Lodi, Calif. She was a member of the Hurley
Community Church. Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Wheeler
Funeral Home. Those who wish to may make memorial contributions to the Hurley
Community Church, to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer
Society. The Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
OCHOA: Sarah Rodriguez Ochoa, 83, a resident of Central, entered life eternal
Saturday in Albuquerque. She was born Jan. 8, 1909, in Central. Mrs. Ochoa was a
member of the Catholic Church, and was retired from Fort Bayard Medical Center.
Calling hours are from 2-9 p.m. today at Baca's Funeral Chapels, where the
prayer vigil will be held at 7 with Deacon Johnnie Perez officiating. The
funeral liturgy will be held Wednesday morning at 10 in the Santa Clara Catholic
Church, with the Rev. Mike Lindsay officiating. The rite of committal will
follow at the Central Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her
husband, who preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Jim Ochoa, and
his wife, Rosella, of Albuquerque, and Martin Ochoa of Central; one brother,
Ramon Rodriguez of Los Angeles; one sister, Pola Mesa, also of Los Angeles; and
three grandchildren, Melissa Benavidez, Sarah Ochoa and Alex Ochoa. Casket
bearers will be Richard Munoz, Eddie Rodriguez, Johnnie Woods, Lino Woods and
Ramon Woods. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
OGAS: Andrew Peter Magallenes Ogas, infant son of Debra Magallenes and Peter
Ogas, died Tuesday morning in Gila Regional Medical Center. Chapel service will
be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. Concluding service
will be in the Silver City Catholic Cemetery. Deacon Johnnie Perez will
officiate. Survivors are his parents, Debra Magallenes and Peter Ogas; his
grandparents, Orlando and Ruth Ogas, Viola Avalos and Paulino Quesada; his
great-grandmothers, Benita Hernandez and Adela Martinez; his
great-great-grandmother, Beatrice Quesada; and numerous uncles, aunts and
cousins. Casket bearers will be Felix Hernandez and Junior Alcorta. Entrusted to
the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
OGAS: Antonio L. Ogas, 27 and Carlos L. Ogas, 24, two brothers residing at
Bayard, were killed instantly early last Thursday morning when their car crashed
head-on into a trailer truck, 12 miles west of Lordsburg on U.S. Highway 70. The
truck driver, Mathew T. Hunt, 37 of Phoenix, escaped injury in the accident. The
truck telescoped the Ogas car. The accident was investigated by State Patrolman
Henry Houston and Sheriff's officers of Hidalgo County. Surviving the two
brothers are their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ogas, Safford, Arizona; four
brothers, Ernest, Billy, Efren and David, all of Safford; and four sisters, Ida
Angelita and Elsia, Safford and Mrs. Carolina Arzate, Bayard. Antonio Ogas also
is survived by his wife, Margaret, and two children. Rosary services were held
Sunday evening at the Cox Mortuary chapel. Mass was said at 10 a.m. Monday in
the Bayard Catholic Church. Burial took place in the Hurley cemetery.
OGAS & MALDONADO: In a one-car crash in the highway half a mile from Gila early
Saturday morning, Cecilio Ogas, Jr., 18, Cliff High School student, was
instantly killed and Joe Maldonado, 23, was fatally injured, dying in Hillcrest
Hospital several hours after the accident. Maldonado, driver of the car, lost
control of the vehicle when it skidded on gravel on a curve and rolled over
three times. Both victims were crushed under the wrecked car. The accident was
investigated by State Police Patrolman Gene Tow and deputies of the Sheriff's
Department. It brought Grant Count's highway death toll for the year to 12. The
Ogas youth was a son of MR. and Mrs. Cecilio Ogas, Sr., and Maldonado was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Maldonado, residents of Gila. The tragic accident
brought sadness to the Cliff-Gila community. Double rosary services were held
Monday evening for the victims in San Isidro Catholic Church at Gila. Funeral
mass said by the Rev. Fr. James Milano of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,
Silver City, at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial of Cecilio took place in the Gila Mesa
Cemetery. Interment of Joe was in the ancestral Maldonado family plot at Gila.
Members of Cecilio's Sophomore Class of Cliff High School attended the double
rites. Serving as pallbearers were Sammy Chacon, Salvador Gutierrez, Joe Peru,
Merejildo Placencio, Sonny Polanco and Theodor Polanco. Burial was under
direction of the Curtis Mortuary.
OGAS: Cecilio Najar Ogas, 84, of Gila passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, at Gila
Regional Medical Center. The rosary will be recited tonight at 7 at Bright
Funeral Home with Deacon William Holguin. The funeral Mass will be celebrated
Thursday at 10 a.m, in the San Ysidro Catholic Church with Father Rod Nichols
officiating. Mr. Ogas was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Gila the son of Sylverio Ogas
and Maria Najar. Mr. Ogas is survived by six daughters, Viola Ogas of Gila, Lone
Valdez and her husband, Tomas, of Las Cruces, Patsy Barnwell and her husband,
Michael, of Gila, Toni Ogas and John Tezak of Gila, Becky Long and her husband,
Raymond, of Gila, and Lupe Barnwell and her husband, Steve, of Reno, Nev.; two
sons, Jacovo Ogas and his wife, Jane, of Tacoma, Wash., and Augustine Ogas and
his wife, Judy, of Tucson, Ariz.; four sisters, Feliciana Portillo of Hurley,
Sabina Rosado of Tucson, Vicki Najar of Las Cruces and Priscilla Fuller of
Houston; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.; and two special friends,
Laraine and Louise Alvarado. Mr. Ogas was preceded in death by two sons, Cecilio
Ogas Jr. in 1965, and Richard Ogas, in 1968; and one granddaughter, Rhiannon
Elarnwell, in. 1986. Pallbearers will be James Ogas, Manuel Sanchez, Joe Acosta,
Andy Carbajal, Eddie Barka and Nacho Morales. Honorary bearers are Jimmy Barka
and Joe Ray. Bright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
OGAS: Clara Chavez Ogas, 75, was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Santa Rita. She passed
away Wednesday, March 6 at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, Calif. She
went peacefully in her sleep after suffering from sever complications to recent
surgery. She was the daughter of Hilario and Clara Chavez. Mrs. Ogas is survived
by her husband of 5 years, Reyes Barela Ogas 0f Sun City, Calif.; her son David
Ogas of Huntington Beach, Calif., his wife, Debbie, and their two children
Michael and Stephanie; her son, Raymond Ogas of San Diego, his wife, Laura, an
their daughter, Laurae; her daughter, Susie Ogas Laskaris of Norero, Calif., her
husband, Craig, and their two children, Mario Segun and Daniel Laskaris; and he
daughter, Christina Ogas of Corona, and her two daughters, Marissa and Alicia
Burton. Mrs. Ogas graduate from Silver High School in 1939 and attended Western
New Mexico University in Silver City. She taught school at St. Vincent's
Catholic School in Silver City. In 1960, Clara and Reyes Ogas moved their family
to California, where she went to work for Autonetics, a division of Rockwell,
for nine years. She also worked for the La Habra City School District as a
teacher's aide at Ladera Palma Elementary School until her retirement in 1987.
Viewing services were held at 6p.m. Monday, March 11, it Pierce Brothers
Crestlawn Memorial Mortuary in Riverside, Calif., with funeral services at 11
a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Corona. Pallbearers
were her grandsons, Mario Segura, Michael Ogas and Daniel Laskaris, and nephews,
Alfred Ogas, Billy Ogas, Michael Chavez and Lawrence Chavez.
OGAS: David Thomas Ogas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eligio Ogas, was the first victim
of polio in Silver City. He died Monday evening just shortly after having been
admitted to the hospital where his illness was diagnosed as bulbar type polio,
He had been ill for two days before he was taken to a doctor. Rosary services
were held on Wednesday evening at Cox Mortuary chapel and Mass will be said this

the New Mexico State Land Office in Santa Fe after 30 years and was a

OGAS: Juanita Medrano Ogas, 89, a lifelong area resident, passed away Sunday at
her home in Silver City. Visitation will be held this afternoon beginning at 3

at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The rite of committal and

Ogas was a communicant at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where she had

Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Rufus Ogas, in 1962, and a son, Sam Ogas, in 1995. Surviving her are a daughter,
Olivia Lewis of Silver City; 15 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one

OGAS: Julia B. Ogas, 94, died Friday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was
born July 25, 1894, in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, and moved to Gila in
1900. In 1928, she and her husband, Reyes "Red" Ogas, moved to Silver City. Mrs.
Ogas was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and was a
homemaker. To those who knew her she was known as "Grandma Julia." Calling hours
were held Sunday from 1-5:30 p.m. in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. Rosary
services were held Sunday evening at 7:30 in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
Church where Mass of the Christian burial was celebrated this morning at 10 with

OGAS: Lady Carmen L. Ogas, 79, a longtime resident of Garfield entered eternal
life Tuesday at Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. She was born July 22,
1918, in Dwyer to Jose and Diega Lara. She was a homemaker. A devoted member of
the Catholic Church, she was active in several church societies. She was a
member of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher of
Jerusalem, invested in 1989, upon her confirmation by Pope John Paul II. She is
survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Adrian Ogas of the family home;
three sons, Dickie Ogas and his wife, Cleofas of Derry, Herman Hector Ogas and
his wife Toni of Omaha, Neb., and Edmund Ogas and his wife, Alice, of Garfield;
one daughter Patsy Trujillo, and her husband. Henry, of Hatch: three brothers,
Raymond Lara and his wife, Beverly, and Pete Lara, all of Las Cruces, and Mike
Norero and his wife, Carrie, of Albuquerque; and three sisters, Cecilia Abila of
Las Cruces, Marcy Otero and her husband, Felix, of Derry and Virginia Chacon of

grandchildren, Alfred Sanchez Jr., Henry Sanchez, Randy Sanchez, Lori Goetz,
Vangie Wade, Julie Montoya, Susan Montoya, Lou Montoya, Irene Montoya Bobby
Martinez, Pete Martinez and Rosie Martinez; great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Ogas grew up Cliff, but spent most of her life in
Silver City. She was member of St. Vincent Paul Catholic Church, and was a
homemaker. Ms. Ogas was a very active woman and she was always helping people.

OGAS: Petra Ogas, 81, died March 6 at Hillcrest General Hospital. Petra was born
April 7, 1900 in Pinos Altos and was a lifetime resident of Grant County. She is
survived by her son, Cipriano Ogas of Silver City; one step-son, Thomas Ogas of
Central; one step-daughter, Martha Delagoof Hanover; a sister Cecilio Olivas;
and two grandchildren. Services were March 8 at Wheeler Funeral Home, with Mass
the next morning at St. Vincent de Paul. Burial followed at the Silver City
Catholic Cemetery. All arraignments by Wheeler Funeral Home.
OGAS: Stricken with a heart attack at his home, 405 East 13th St Saturday at 5 p
m Reyes Ogas, Sr., well known and respected resident of Silver City since 1928,
died, almost immediately. Mr. Ogas had been busy throughout the day with his
motor trucking business, engaged in filling contracts for moving livestock to
market, incident to heavy fall shipments, and had just returned home, when the
fatal attack came. Born Sept. 7, 1893, at Gila, Mr. Ogas was a member of a
pioneer Grant county ranch and farm family. At the age of 14 he entered the
employ of Thomas Lyons, then one of New Mexico’s largest ranch owners and
cattlemen, for whom he worked until the tragic death of Mr. Lyons, who was
murdered May 19, 1917, in El Paso. He attributed much of his success in later
years to the business training he received from Mr. Lyons. He embarked in a
trucking business at Gila in 1925 and also invested in a ranch and farm. In 1928
he sold his land holdings on the Gila River and moved to Silver City with his
family to go into motor truck contracting and hauling on an extensive scale. His
business grew into the largest trucking concerns in this part of the state which
had expanded into a profitable business under his management, assisted by his
sons. Surviving Mr. Ogas are his mother, Mrs. Ascension Ogas; his wife; Mrs.
Acention Ogas; his sons Crecencio Reyes, Jr., Alfred, Frank and John; three
daughters, Blanca, Espiranza and Genevieve; three brothers, Louis, Frank and
Braulio and a sister, Mrs. Ricardo Rodriguez, Hurley; and a cousin, S. L
Villarreal. Three of his sons served in World War II, Reyes, Jr. in the Navy,
Alfred in the Air Forces, and Crecencio in the Army, all having fine records of
which their father was justly proud. Funeral services were held Tuesday with
high mass at St. Vincent de. Paul’s Catholic Church, at 8:30 a. m., celebrated
by Rev. Lindsey, parish pastor, followed by services at the family home at 3 pm,
with interment in the Catholic cemetery directed by the Cox Mortuary. Active

OGAS: Visitation and funeral services were planned today in Safford, Ariz., for
Romalda Ogas, 74, who entered into rest Tuesday. Mrs. Ogas was born Feb. 7, 1914
to Cecelia Enriquez and Ignacio Lopez. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Guillermo "Bill" Ogas, who died on Oct. 30, 1983. Survivors include a sister,
Natividad Rodriguez of Bayard; a brother, Pilar Lopez, also of Bayard; four
daughters, Carolina Arzate of El Paso, Texas, Senaida Ogas Rivera and Elsie
Garza, both of Safford, and Angelita Ogas of Thatcher, Ariz.; four sons, Ernesto
Ogas of Tucson, Ariz., Billy Ogas of Douglas, Ariz., and Efren and David Ogas of
Safford; 35 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 8

OGAS: Rufus Ogas, 56, life-long resident of Gila, died Monday at the home of his
sister, Miss Natividad Ogas, in Silver City. He was a retired maintenance
employee of the Cliff-Gila schools. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Juanita Ogas; a
son, Samuel Ogas and a daughter, Mrs. Olivia Lewis; 11 grandchildren; his
sister, and two brothers, Vicente of Silver City and Max of Los Angeles. Rosary

Regional Medical Center. He was born May 12, 1931 to Rufus and Juanita Medrano

Saturday, Dec. 26, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Mr. Ogas was born Dec. 21,
1908, in Gila to George and Rafaela Ogas. He is survived by his beloved wife of
31 years, Estefana Calderon Ogas of Santa Clara; a brother, Cipriano Ogas, and
his wife, LaDonna, of Santa Rita; two sons, Richard R. Ogas and his wife,
Margaret, of Lake Isabella, Calif., and Jesse 0. Ogas and Clara of Santa Clara;
three daughters, Teresa O. Nanez and her husband, Jimmy, of Blueridge, Texas;

Gutierrez. Mr. Ogas retired from Kennecott Copper Corp. in Santa Rita after 40
years of service. He worked at the Grant County Public Shooting Range for 10
years, pursuing one of his many hobbies. He enjoyed carpentry, reloading
ammunition, hunting and fishing in his earlier years. After retirement, watching
his favorite baseball team on television was one of his most treasured hobbies.
His passion for gardening showed through his rose plants, lawn and fruit trees.
Mr. Ogas embraced the joy of being with grandchildren, friends and family. He
was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Gila Fish and Gun Club.

OGDEN: Jack P. Ogden, 78, a Deming resident, passed away Thursday, July 23, at
Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Visitation was held Sunday at Baca’s
Funeral Chapels in Deming. The funeral service was to be held today at 2 in the
afternoon at Bethel Baptist Church in Deming with the Rev. W. Howard Meadows
officiating. Concluding services and interment followed at Mountain View
Cemetery. Mr. Ogden was born Oct. 28, 1919, in Cedron, Texas, to Allen Ogden and
Sue May Hill Ogden. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a
former member of the board of trustees at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. He
farmed in San Simon, Ariz., the occupation from which he retired. He was a
10-year resident of Deming, where he was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margie M. Ogden of Deming; a son Jack Robert Ogden
of Oklahoma City; a sister, Jeffa, of Arlington VA; and three grandchildren,
Karissa, Ryan and Evan Ogden. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph

OGLES: Floyd B. Ogles, 76, a Silver City resident for the passed 17 years died
here Sunday following an illness. Mr. Ogles was formerly associated with E.
Cosgrove, Inc. before his retirement here. He was an associate of the Wilmot
Hardware Co. of Roswell for some 23 years before moving to Silver City. He was a
veteran of World War I. Mr. Ogles is survived by his wife Marybelle of Silver
City; a daughter Mrs. Josephine Chambers of Roswell; two grandsons, Dr. Richard
Chambers of the University of California at Berkley and James Chambers of
Roswell. Funeral services were held in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel Feb. 20
with the Rev. C.M. Henderson of the Church of The Good Shepherd officiating.
Grave interment services were held Feb. 21 in the South Park Cemetery at Roswell
with military services and Dr. O.H. Dillion of the First Methodist Church of

OGLESBY: Funeral services for Jeff Oglesby, former resident of Pinos Altos, who
died Saturday morning, January 15 in Phoenix, were held in that city at the
Moore Mortuary Chapel on Monday. The Rev. Eaton officiated at the services and
military burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Phoenix. He is survived by his wife,
Edna; a son of Phoenix and two daughters, Dorothy Ralston of California and
Donna Ray Oglesby of Phoenix. Two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Williams of Silver City
and Mrs. Garvin Conklin of Calapatria, California and two brothers, John of
Pecos, Texas and Walter of Pinos Altos also survive. Mr. Oglesby, who was 57 at
the time of his death, had been ill for several years. He was born in Pinos
Altos and lived here until he moved to Phoenix twelve years ago. He was a

to Phoenix Sunday to attend the services and returned Monday evening.
OGLESBY: Joseph A. Oglesby, 63, of Burlington, N.C., died Monday. Survivors

O’HERON: Gene O’Heron, resident of Silver City for 56 years, died last Friday at
Truth or Consequences, where he was spending several days. Death was caused by a
heart attack. He was a retired employee of Chino Mines Division, Kennecott
Copper Corp., with a long and efficient record with the company. Survivors are
the widow, Mrs. Catherine O’Heron; a daughter Mrs. Mary Jean Appleyard of

OHLWILER: Charles R. Ohlwiler, 83, of Silver City entered eternal rest the night
of Sunday, March 29, at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 12, 1914,
in Camp Verde, Ariz. Mr. Ohlwiler was a concentrator foreman with Phelps Dodge
prior to his retirement.’ He worked for Phelps Dodge for more than 44 years and
was a member of the Indian Hills Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held
Thursday at 2 p.m. in Baca’s Funeral Chapels, with Pastors David Prell and Ken
Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery. Survivors

rest Wednesday at her home. She was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Jerome, Ariz., to Fred
and Ida Boostrom Bergman. She was a member of Indian Hills Baptist Church and
was a homemaker. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, with the
funeral service being held at 2 at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. Pastor Kenneth B.
Palmer will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery. She is
survived by her husband, Charles R. Ohlwiler of Silver City; two daughters,
Donna Carson and her husband, Jim, of Silver City, and Mary Reece and her
husband, Dan, of Portal, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Derrick Carson and his
wife, Julie, of Houston, Devorie Griffiths and her husband, Russ, of Portal, and

OJINAGA: Jose A. Ojinaga, 81, of Santa Rita, died Saturday at Hillcrest General
Hospital. He was a retired employee of the Kennecott Copper Corp. of Santa Rita
and had been a resident of Grant County for more than 48 years. He is survived
by his wife; five sons, Anselmo, Ramon, Miguel, all of Santa Rita, Jose, Jr. of
Los Angeles and Vicente of Santa Fe; three daughters, Mrs. Manuel Garcia, Mrs.
Arturo Costales and Mrs. Israel Torres, all of Santa Rita; and a brother,
Abraham Marquez of Gila. Twenty-four grandchildren also survive. Rosary services
were held Monday evening at the Santa Rita Catholic Church and funeral mass was
held at 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Burial services were at 4:30 Tuesday
afternoon at the Hanover cemetery with the Cox Mortuary in charge of
arrangements.
OJINAGA: Death last Wednesday night claimed Mrs. Josefa R. Ojinaga, 71, who had
lived in Santa Rita or 47 years. She was born in Mexico. Rosary services were

followed by mass and burial n the Hanover cemetery, the Rev. J. 0. Ordonez,
officiating. Surviving are five sisters, Anselmo, Ramon, Migue1, Santa Rita;

was born in Hurley and was a resident of Grant County most of her life. She was

OJINAGA: Robert "Tito” Gonzales Ojinaga, 47, of Las Cruces entered into rest
Tuesday in Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. He was born Aug. 19, 1947, in'
Santa Rita and had resided in Las Cruces for the past 12 years. Mr. Ojinaga was
medically retired from White Sands Missile Range. He was a 1966 Cobre High
School graduate, and a U.S. Army veteran, having served an 18-month tour of duty
in Vietnam. Calling hours were from 2-4 this afternoon in Baca's Funeral
Chapels, where the vigil prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass
will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church at
Fort Bayard with the Rev. Paulas Kao officiating. The rite of Committal will
follow in Fort Bayard National Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

OJINAGA: Tony E "Booboo" Ojinaga Jr. 34, formerly of Santa Clara, and a resident
of Los Angeles for 15 years, died Sunday. He was the son of Mary Lou and Tony

Clara; two sisters, Dina Jasso and her husband, Paul, of Santa Clara. and Arlene
Castanon and her husband, David, of Bayard; his maternal grandmother1 Rose
Esquibel of Hanover, his paternal grandfather Mike Ojinaga of Santa Clara; four
nieces, Itanefle, Ashley, Shae and Stevie; two nephews, Anthony and Andrew; and
numerous aunts and uncles. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Santa Clara
Catholic Church on Saturday, July 20, at 10am. with the Rev. Mike Lindsay

OLANDER: Albert "Buster" Olander, 66, a resident of Tyrone, died Sunday at his
residence. He was born Nov. 3, 1924. Mr. Olander in April 1990 retired as a
carpenter from the Phelps Dodge Tyrone Branch. He had lived in Grant County for
17 years, coming here from Bisbee, Ariz. Mr. Olander served with the U.S. Marine
Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Elks Club. Survivors include
four sons, Don Olander, Jim Olander and Ken Olander, all of Bisbee, and David
Olander of North Carolina; four daughters, Phyllis Richardson, Shirley Seng and
Jackie Towle, all of Tucson, Ariz., and Barbara Perkins of Colorado; two
brothers, Phil Olander and Carl Olander, both of Bisbee; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Olander, in 1982. Visitation will be
held Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Dugan Funeral Chapel in Bisbee. Graveside
services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Desert Rest Cemetery in Bowie,

OLDHAM: Mrs. Edith. M. Oldham, 83, passed away Friday, July 15, at, Hillcrest
Hospital. Mrs. Oldham was a native of Kansas, and was a resident of Truth or
Consequences at the time, of her death. She is survived by her husband, Oscar
Oldham of Truth or Consequences, a son, Orval 0. Oldham of Silver City, seven
grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Survivors also include two sisters,
Mrs. Mallie Moore of Des Moines. NM and Mrs. Hazel Oldham of Grenville, NM and
two brothers, Fred Mahnnah of Clayton and Earl Mahnnah of Raton. Funeral

OLDHAM: Harriett Faye Oldham, 72, a 40-year resident of Silver City, died at her
residence Sunday. The daughter of Harry and Maggie Wanrow Pennington, she was
born in Humboldt, Neb., Aug. 20, 1923. Her son, Gary Oldham, her parents, and
three sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Orval, of
the home; one daughter, Julie Maben, and her husband, Johnny, of Roswell; one
grandson, Justin Oldham of Silver City; a granddaughter of Los Lunas; a
daughter-in-law, Monica Oldham of Silver City; two brothers, Pete Pennington and
Jack Pennington, both of Humboldt; and two sisters, Gloris Johnson of El Paso,
Texas, and Ardis See of Wauchula, Fla. She was a member of the United Methodist
Church and her pastors the Rev, Robert Bellows, will officiate at her services
Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home chapel. Interment will
follow at Memory Lane Cemetery. Members of the Lions Club will serve as
pallbearers. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the Curtis-Bright chapel.

OLDHAM: Oscar Oldham died Aug. 23, at Hillcrest General Hospital. Mr. Oldham was
born Oct. 31, 1892, in Buchcreek, KY. He had ranched all of his life around
Grenville, N.M. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Oldham was preceded
in death by his wife, Edith. Mr. Oldham was sent to Grenville for burial. He lay
in state at the Schooler and Gordon Mortuary in Clayton Tuesday afternoon and
graveside services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Mr. Oldham is survived by one

OLINAR: Ysidro S. Olinar, 63, passed away Wednesday at his home in Orange
County, Calif. He is born in Dwyer in 1923. He is survived by two daughters,

and brother-in-law, Juan and Manuela Aguirre of Central; nephew and nieces, Mr.

OLIPHANT: Harvey Andrew Oliphant, 85, of Silver City passed away Friday at Fort
Bayard Medical Center. Services are pending with Bright Funeral Home.
OLIPHANT: Margaret Miller Oliphant died peacefully in her home Sunday, June 20,
at age 84. She worked in the Cobre School District for 21 years, from 1953 to
1974. She taught English to junior high and high school students and later
became the head of her department. She lived in Silver City for more than 50
years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, and
the Congregational Church of Silver City. She enjoyed playing the piano, caring
for animals and reading. She was born in Hannibal, MO, and spent much of her
childhood in Iowa. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Grinnell
College and a master's degree in education. She served as the dean of women at
Adrian College in Michigan in 1940. During the last four years of her life, she
was lovingly cared for in her home by Coordinated Care Services staff, who
became like a family to her. She is survived by cousins in Missouri, Iowa,
California and Washington. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
OLIVAREZ: Hipolito Martin Olivarez, 87, a resident of Bayard, passed away
Saturday in Silver city. Mr. Olivarez is survived by two sons, Stanley Olivarez
and his wife, Dora, of Brentwood, Calif., and David Olivarez of Phoenix, Ariz.;
four daughters, Jessie Garcia of Tucson, Ariz., Delfina Flores of Miami, Ariz.,
and Rebecca Guerrero and Rosa Aguilar, both of Globe, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren;
and several great-grandchildren. Mr. Olivarez was a great father and a
responsible man. Visitation will be today from 4-6 p.m. in the chapel of the
Wheeler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9 a.m., also in the
chapel, with the Rev. Ricardo Hinojal as celebrant. Interment will follow in the

with her heavenly father Sunday, Oct. 3, at Silver City Care Center. She was
born July 9, 1904, in Pinos Altos to Bruno and Lucia Gomez. Mrs. Olivas was a
homemaker and a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Calling
hours will begin at 5 in the evening Wednesday at Baca's Funeral Chapels, where
the vigil service will begin at 6. Deacon Johnnie Perez will recite the holy
rosary. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Thursday at 10 in the morning at
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father John Colgan officiating. The

OLIVER: Word has been received by Mrs. Clara Oliver of the death of her
brother-in-law Allen Oliver, on Dec. 29 in Washington State as the result of a
heart attack. As a young man he lived is Santa Rita with his family. Ony last
October he and his family visited in Silver City. Mr. Oliver is survived by his
widow two daughters, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary C. Oliver, Ganada, Ariz, Mrs.

rest Friday, June He was born Oct. 2, 1958, Louis and Myrtle Oliver. 1976 Cobre
High School graduate, he owned and operated Oliver drilling and Well Service. He
was married for 21 years to Debb (Black) Oliver. Mr. Oliver was a hard-working
man who believed a man was only as good as his word and conducted his business
on a handshake. He was dedicated family man who enjoyed children and was friend
to many. He will be greatly missed and his memory will carry on through those

was born April 8, 1932, in Hamilton, Texas, the daughter of Buster Hedgpeth and
Annabelle Baker Hedgpeth. She married Don Curtis Oliver on June 30, 1950, in
Lovington. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Jimmy Oliver and his wife,
Stephanie, of Silver City, and Jackie Oliver of Anna, Texas; one daughter, Lee
Ann Bray, and her husband, Buddy, of Anthony; twin brothers, Coy Hedgpeth and
his wife, Lorraine, of Odessa Texas, and Roy Hedgpeth and his wife, Sharon of
Houston; four beloved grandchildren, Dustie and T.J. Oliver of Silver City, and
Katie and Steven Bray of Anthony; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs.
Oliver was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Valton Hedgpeth.
Martha and Don Oliver were a ranching family, who moved to Mimbres in the early
1960s. They were founding members of Rio Mimbres Baptist Church, where she
devoted many years as the church pianist, Sunday school teacher, and beloved
friend to her church family and neighbors. She loved music and spent many years
teaching piano lessons. Mrs. Oliver loved sports and will be remembered for her
eagerness to participate in volleyball, tennis and baseball games. She was a
devoted wife and mother, a loving and faithful friend to many, and a beloved
grandmother who always had time for her grandchildren. Mrs. Oliver's sweet
spirit and her love for her Lord was evident in all she did, and in these many
months of illness, her faith in God shone through to her family, friends,
doctors, and all those who came in contact with her. Her family rejoiced in her
life and rejoices in her release from earthly suffering and her arrival in her
eternal home. The family requests her friends to join in this celebration.

OLIVER: Miss Mary Oliver, 86, died last Friday at Hillcrest General Hospital
‘She was a widely, respected retired racher who had an outstanding record in
education. Born in Illinois,, she came to Grant County In 1904, and I 1909
Joined the staff of the New Mexico Normal School, after recieving a degree in
pedagogy and also had a bachelor’, and master’s degree from Columbia University,
and became a teacher In, the Normal School, and thereafter served in missionary
work in Ariz.; and later became active in the Normal School library. In 1962.
Miss Oliver was paid tribute by 36 civic clubs and organizations, by her
selection as Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Besides her year, of teaching and
library work, she, was vitally intested in community activities. She was an
officer of the AAUW, The Silver City Business and Professional Women’s Club, and
the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Harry Simpson of Ft.
Collins, Colo.; several nephews and nieces, Including Mrs. James Turner of
Silver City and Mrs. Elizabeth Bigbee of Carlsbad. Funeral services were held
Monday in the Curtis Mortuary chapel, conducted by the Rev. Paul Bobb of the
First Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.
OLIVER: Memorial services for Robert William “Bobby” Oliver who died Sunday in
Las Vegas, Nev., will be held at the Davis Funeral Home, Las Vegas,’ at 4 p.m.,
Friday; and in Silver City at the Elks Lodge at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29. His
remains were cremated. The urn with ashes will be buried in the family plot at
the Masonic Cemetery. Mr. Oliver died unexpectedly at his Las Vegas home. At the
time of his death he was employed as an electrical engineer with the Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory of the University of California at the Nevada
nuclear test site. He was born in Central on Nov. 29, 1917. He attended primary
and secondary schools in Grant County, graduating from Silver High School (then
Teachers College High School) in 1931. He graduated from New Mexico State
University in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
During the course of his career he worked for KSIL radio, Kennecott Copper
Corp., taught four years at Texas A and M, and was an electrical contractor in
Silver City. Prior to joining the Lawrence Livermore staff he was with the
Reynolds Electric Co., an Atomic Energy Commission contractor at Mercury, Nev.
Oliver was exalted ruler of the local Elks Lodge 1961-62. Preceding him in death
was his wife, the former Marion Conway, in May, 1984. They were married July 4,
1941. Mr. Oliver is survived by a son, Michael Oliver of Fredonia, Ariz.; a
daughter, Ruth Alice Feryok of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret
Turner of Silver City, and Mrs. Elizabeth Bigbee of Carlsbad; and a
sister-in-law Alice Kelsey also of Silver City. Contributions may be made to the
Elks Lodge, Silver city.
OLIVER: Daniel Louis Oliver, 80, died April 7 at the Gila Regional Medical
Center in Silver City. Oliver was born Oct. 2, 1903 in Menard, TX, the son of
William Louis and Era Miller Oliver. He was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian
Church in Cliff. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Loree Oliver of San Lorenzo;
one daughter, Wilma June Hoffman of Anchorage, Alaska; one son, Louis Lee Oliver
of San Lorenzo; a sister, Sudie Kingston of Toyahvale, TX; two brothers, Eddie
Lee Oliver of Balmorhea, TX; four grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
Mr. Oliver lie in state at the Curtis-Bright Chapel. David Goble, pastor of the
Trinity Presbyterian Church of Cliff officiated. Interment followed at Memory
Lane Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Greg Black, Harlie Cox, Johnny
Menard, Charles Disert, Chris Dominguez and C.J. Law. Honorary pallbearers were

OLIVER: George Leon Oliver, 76, of Silver City, died Tuesday in Gila Regional
Medical Center. Mr. Oliver better known as Big George or Butch was born in
Charleston, IL, on Jan, 25, 1911 to Grover and Grace Oliver. He was raised in
Colorado Springs, Colo., and he moved to Grant County in 1942 where he worked as
a butcher, and later at Chino Mines. He retired from Chino in 1973. He was
affectionately known as "The Peddler" to many citizens of Grant County.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret M. Oliver of Silver City; two daughters,
Georgia Bearup and Billie Jean Behrens, also of Silver City; one son, James
Fleming Oliver of Albuquerque; two sisters, Dorris Lundine of Hamett, Calif.,
and Sarah Davidson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a nephew, Joseph Oliver McDowell of
Denver, Colo.; a niece, Becky Karlson of Stanford, Calif.; and six
grandchildren, Michael Bearup, Patrick Bearup, John Behrens, Larry Behrens, Eric
Olan Leon Oliver and Correna Lynn Oliver. Mr. Oliver will lie in state today
from 3-5 p.m. Funeral services will be in the Curtis-Bright chapel at 10:00 a.m.
Friday, with interment to follow in the Gila Mesa Cemetery. Jim Goodwin and the
Rev. C.M.Henderson will officiate at the services. Pallbearers will be Steve
Bearup, Jim Oliver, Carroll Jacobs, Michael Bearup, Patrick Bearup and Clinton

OLIVER: Katie L. Oliver, 83, died Wednesday, May 16, in Hillcrest General
Hospital. Mrs. Oliver was born in Putnam, Texas, and has lived in the Mimbres
area for 17 years. She was a member of the Rio Mimbres Baptist Church. Mrs.
Oliver is survived by three sons, William Russell Oliver of Van Horn, Texas,
Charles W. Oliver of Bentonville, Arkansas, Don C. Oliver of Mimbres, ten
grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2 p.m.
Friday, May 18, in the Curtis-Bright Chapel with the Reverend Ira Turner and
Reverend Wayne Blanton officiating. Burial followed in Memory Lane Cemetery.

O'LOUGHLIN: Barbara Ann O'Loughlin, 58, died Saturday en route to Sierra Medical
Center from Hillcrest General Hospital. Mrs. O'Loughlin was born in Highland,
California and had been a resident of Grant County for 29 years, where she was a
communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard, a member of the
National Federation of Republican Women and the Altar Society. She devoted much
of her time to helping the March of Dimes, the Fort Bayard Medical Center and
St. Mary's Academy. Prior to moving to Grant County, Mrs. O'Loughlin served in
the United States Navy during World War II, where she met her husband, Michael
O'Loughlin of the Royal Air Force of England. After the war they made their home
in California before moving to Grant County. She was preceded in death by her
husband in 1970. Mrs. O'Loughlin is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Rosalie
Correa of British Columbia, Mrs. Mary Calderon and Mrs. Fiannoula Villella of
Nutrioso, Arizona, Mrs. Madeline Acosta of Casper, Wyoming, Mrs. Norah Hood of
Pinos Altos, Roberta O'Loughlin of Bayard, two sons, John O'Loughlin of Silver
City, Michael O'Loughlin of Albuquerque and 14 grandchildren. Rosary recitation
was said Tuesday evening in the Curtis-Bright Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection
was held Wednesday morning in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard with
the Rev. Father Miguel Macaya officiating at both services. Burial followed in
the Silver City Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were John Stermer, Dan
White, Frank Heslin and Chet Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Lynn Detweiler,
John Simons and Elias Gomez. The family asks that donations in her name be made
to the American Heart Association or the Red Cross.
O’LOUGHLIN: Michael J. O’Loughlin, 40, suffered a fatal heart attack in El Paso
September 22. Mr. O’Loughlin was a native of Sutton, Surrey England, and had
been a resident of Bayard for the past six years. At the time of his death he
was employed by Control Data Corporation of El Paso. Survivors include his widow
Barbara Ann of Bayard: two sons, John and Michael, both of Bayard; six
daughters; Mrs. Rosalie Correa of British Columbia, Madeline Mary, Brigid, Norah
and Roberta, all of Bayard and one granddaughter. Mass was celebrated in Our
Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard at 9 a. m. Saturday Interment followed
in the Catholic Cemetery of Silver City with the Rev. Fr. Adrian St. Charles
officiating. The family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to
St. Mary’s Interparochial School.
OLSON: Agnes Pruit Olson, 85, a life long Grant County resident, entered life
eternal Saturday evening at Sunset Vista Nursing Home. She was born in Pearl,
N.M., on Jan. 11, 1911, to the late Charlie and Ada Pruit. Mrs. Olson owned the
Santa Rita Beauty Shop until 1962, then became a partner at the Beauty Inn for
many years. She was an active member of the Silver City Woman's Club and a
member of Eastern Star. A. memorial servie will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2
at Baca's Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Robert Ihlefeld officiating. Survivors
include her son, Chuck Olson, and his wife, Kathy, of Mimbres; a sister,
Clarabelle Gore of Deming; three grandsons, Lanny Olson and his wife Jill, Matt
Olson and his wife, Patty and Michael Olson, all of Silver City; two great
granddaughters, Ashley and Jennifer Olson; and several nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Olson, in 1958; three brothers,

OLSON: Miss Alma D. Olson, of El Paso, 64, died Tuesday at Fort Bayard Veteran
Hospital. She was a veteran of World War I and a teacher. Nearest of kin is a
sister, Miss Jennie Olson, El Paso. Harding & Orr Mortuary of EL Paso is in
charge of funeral arrangements. Burial will take place in El Paso.
Rosary for Mrs. Sayde Olson, 88, was said in the Curtis Bright funeral chapel at

OLSON: Clarence E. Olson, 54, a foreman the past eight years at Santa Rita
operations of Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp. died Sunday. Funeral
services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Cox Mortuary chapel. Conducting the
rites was the Rev. Harold E. Johnson of the Santa Rita Community Church
Ritualistic graveside services in Masonic cemetery were held by Santa Rita
Masonic Lodge No.44. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Agnes T. Olson; a son,
Charles; mother, Mrs. Daisy Olson, Davenport, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Harvey
Chapman, Davenport, and Mrs. Ida Williams, Kansas City, MO.
OLSON: Peter Olson, 87, father of Mrs. Ray Brancheau, died the past week at the
Brancheau residence where he and his widow, Mrs. Sarah Olson had been making
their home for the past five years. Mr. Olson was a native of Manistee, Mich. He
was a retired carpenter. Survivors other than his widow are a daughter and nine
grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren A Rosary was said In the chapel of the
Curtis Mortuary, with the Rev. Fr. A. James Milano officiating. The funeral Mass
was held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Burial was in Memory Lane

O'MARY: Fairy Dee O'Mary, 69 a resident of Silver City, passed away Monday at
Gila Regional Medical Center She was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Tinsn, Ark., the
daughter of Roy and Virginia Turner. She married Noah M. O'Mary on June 6, 1942,
in Harrell, Ark., and they later moved to Silver City to make their home. She
was a member of the First Baptist Church She is survived by her husband of 53
years, Noah M. O'Mary of the home; three ., sons, Jimmy O’Mary and his wife,
Pat, and their, daughter, Lisa, of Albuquerque, John O'Mary and his wife, Kathi,
and their children, Michael and Diane, of Enterprise, Ala., and David O'Mary and
his children, Jerimy and Chris, of the home; and her daughter, Tina Guerra, and
her husband, Willie, and their children, Chariti and Amber, of Tacoma, Wash. She
is also survived by six brothers, Kenneth Turner of Malveen, Ark., Turner of
Eldorado, Ark., Jack Turner of. Harrell, Blaun Turner of Harrison, Ark., Roy
Turner Jr. of Louisiana and Harold Turner of Harreil; and by her sister, Edith
Newton of Hampton, Ark. The funeral service was to be held this afternoon at 2

Medical Center. Mr. O'Mary a native of Hampton, Ark., was a resident of Silver
City at the time of his death. He is survived by two daughters, his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Noah O'Mary of Silver City, a sister, Mrs. Tina Joy Guerra of Silver
City, three brothers, James Donald O'Mary of Albuquerque, John Alfred O'Mary of
El Paso, and David Paul O'Mary of Silver City. Funeral services were at 9:30
a.m., Friday, August 18, in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dick
Ross officiating. Burial followed in Memory Lane Cemetery. Serving as

ONDA: John Onda, 80, a resident of Silver City, passed away Monday, April 20, at
Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Denver. Mr. Onda was
a railroad engineer for 39 years for the Nickel Plate Railroad, retiring in
1979. He was a Mason for 34 years. Cremation has taken place by Baca’s Mimbres
Crematorium and inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date. Survivors
include his three children, William A. Onda and his wife, Lynn, of Silver City,
Cecilia A. Lockhart and her husband, John, of Wellesley, Mass., and John W. Onda
and his wife, Devada, of Santa Fe, Texas; his close friend, Virginia Heron of
Silver City; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Onda was
preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Geraldine Onda, in August 1989. He will
he greatly missed by his family and friends. Entrusted to the care of Baca’s

O'NEAL: Bill J. O'Neal, a former Silver City businessman, passed away Monday,
Feb. 12, in Lubbock, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Anita, of Lubbock; and
his daughter, Patricia, and his son, Jerry, both of Los Angeles. There will be a
memorial Service Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Lubbock. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the
Mahon Library Cassette Fund of Lubbock.
O'NEAL: Ralph O’Neal died recently at the White Mountain Community Hospital in
Springerville, AZ, at the age of 69. Born on Dec. 25, 1914 in Marble City, Ok,
he was a resident of Reserve and a laborer for the saw mill there. He was an
avid lover of sports including fishing and hunting as well he was an active
wood-worker. He is survived by his wife, Nora Mae O'Neal of Reserve; two sons,
Jerry Don of Reserve and Bobby Wayne of Fort Worth, TX; four grandchildren; two
brothers, Harley of Reserve and Leroy of Asher, OK and two sisters, Mirt Cole
and Helen Baird both of Asher. Services were held at the Baptist Church in
Reserve with Dr. Ray Perdue officiating. Arrangements were handled by the Jewkes
Mortuary of Springerville.
O'NEAL: Welch O'Neal, 74, a resident of Palestine, Texas, and former resident of
Hurley, passed away Tuesday in Palestine. He was an employee of Kennecott Copper
Corp. in Hurley for several years. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite O'Neal
of Palestine; a daughter, Peggy Ann Richardson, also of Palestine; a son,
Michael O'Neal, of San Diego, Calif., three grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Paul Hill of Las Cruces, Carl Hill of
Tucson, and Gerald Hill of Deming. Services were held today in Palestine.
ONTIVEROS: Epifiana Ontiveros, 87, a lifelong resident of Grant County, passed
away Sunday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She is survived by two sisters,
Elisa O. Carrasco and Beatrice O. Hernandez, both of Silver City. She is also
survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be said by Deacon Johnnie
Perez at Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday at 8 p.m. The funeral Mass will
be said Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev.
Rod Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at the Hanover Cemetery. Serving

ONTIVEROZ: Mrs. Maria Ontiveroz, 75, died in a Silver City hospital last
Thursday. She had lived in Santa Rita for 55 years. Rosary services were held
Sunday evening in the Santa Rita Catholic Church. Mass was said at 9 a.m. Monday
in the church, followed by burial in the Hanover cemetery under direction of the
Cox Mortuary. Surviving are three daughters, Miss Epifiana Ontiveroz, Mrs. Liza
Carrasco and Mrs. Frank Hernandez, of Santa Rita; 14 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
OPGENORTH: Funeral services were held Monday in Deming at the Mahoney Funeral
Home for Henry Opgenorth, pioneer resident of Sierra County, who passed away at
Olney, Texas last week while visiting a daughter. The rites were conducted by
the Rev. H. E. Johnson of the Santa Rita Community Church. Burial took place in
the Masonic plot in Mountain View cemetery. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Hattie
Colson Opgenorth, and a daughter, Mrs. Jack McKnight, Throckmorton, Texas.
OPPEN: Phillip Orlando Oppen, 62, resident south of Deming died at his home
recently. He was born March 5, 1922 in Lake Crystal, Minn. and was a Navy
Veteran of World War II. He was retired from electrical auto repair and moved to
Deming five years ago from Bellevue, WA. In Deming he was a member of the
Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Luna County Gem and Mineral Society and delivered
the Las Cruces Sun News. Funeral services were held at Baca's Wheeler Funeral
Chapel. Pastor Edward Richmeyer officiated and interment followed at the Fort
Bayard National Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Lydia Oppen of the home;

visiting her husband, a patient at the hospital. Survivors are her husband,

Teresa and Socorro of Bayard; six sisters, Mrs. Mary P Allen, and Mrs. Larry De

OROSCO: Mrs. Inez H Orosco, 69, of San Lorenzo, died Tuesday night in Deming
Memorial Hospital She was a lifelong resident of Grant County. Survivors are six
daughters; Silvestre De La O, Mrs. Marie Rascon, Isabel, Juanita, Josephina and
Manuelita Orosco; three sons, Jimmy, Jesus, and Jose, Orosco; 29 grandchildren
and 21 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Luz Alvarado. Funeral
arrangements are pending at the Curtis Mortuary.
ORDONEZ: Death last Saturday summoned Mrs. Carolina Ordonez, 92, at the family
home in Bayard. Rosary services were held Monday at 7:30 in her home, followed
Tuesday at 4:30 with funeral services at the Infant Jesus Catholic church in
Hurley and burial in the Hurley cemetery. The Cox Mortuary was in charge of
funeral arrangements. Rev. Fr Ramon Estevill conducted the services. Surviving
are a son, Antonio Ordonez, a daughter, Mrs. Maria Martinez of Bayard; a
brother, Trinidad Ordonez, Las Cruces, arid a sister, Mrs. Carmen Gutierrez,
Ojos Azules, Chihuahua, Mexico; 13 nephews and nieces; 10 grandchildren; 14
great grandchildren and 45 grand nephews and grand nieces.
ORDONEZ: Frank C. Ordonez, 79, a resident of Bayard entered eternal life Tuesday

late Antonio and Angelita (Ochoa) Ordonez. Mr. Ordonez was a retired employee of
the Santa Fe railroad. He worked as a car maintenance inspector. He was a
communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2-4
in the afternoon Thursday at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. A vigil service will begin
at 6pm in the evening at Infant Jesus Catholic church in Hurley; Father Dan
Porter will lead the recitation of the rosary. The funeral liturgy will be
celebrated Friday at 2 in the afternoon at Infant Jesus Catholic Church with
Father Porter officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Fort
Bayard National Cemetery. Mr. Ordoñez is survived by his wife, Dolores Garcia
Ordoñez of Bayard; a daughter, Frances Ordoñez Kelly of Bayard; two brothers,
Epitacio Ordoñez of Santa Clara and Emiliano Ordoñez of Silver City; and two
granddaughters, Melissa and Katherine Kelly. He was preceded in death by his
parents; two brothers, Johnny and Refugio Ordonez; three sisters, Carmen Gomez,
Jessie Sandoval and Carolina Garcia; and a daughter, Lucy Ordoñez. Pallbearers
will be Gilbert Montoya, Johnny Montoya, Claude Gomez, Pete R. Ordoñez Jr.,
Olegario Campos and Rudy Mesa. Honorary pallbearers are all his nieces and

Ordonez was a resident of Bayard. She is survived by her parents Frank and

and Katherine; her grandmother, Serefina Garcia; and several aunts and uncles

Julian Ordonez of Chicago, Ill. Rosary will be at 6 P.M. Tuesday and Mass will

ORDONEZ: Rosary for Refugio O. Ordonez, 44, who died here Feb 1, were said at
the Curtis Bright funeral chapel Thursday at 7:30pm. Burial mass was recited at
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic church with the Rev Fr Adrian St Charles
officiating. Internment was in the Hurley cemetery with military graveside
services. Mr. Ordonez is survived by his widow, three children, three brothers

ORDONEZ: Rita M. Ordonez, 61, passed away Wed., March 15 at Ft. Bayard Medical
Center. She is survived by her husband, Emiliano Ordonez of N. Hurley, three

Mrs. Nellie Morones of El Paso, a son, Arturo Ordonez of Silver City and 14

of Hurley, four sisters, Mrs. Ermelinda Bencomo of Danville, Ill., Mrs. Teresa
Barela of Hurley, Mrs. Celia Avalos of Pico Rivera, Calif., Mrs. Nestora
Bustamante of Norwalk, Calif., and a brother, Larry Medrano of El Paso. Funeral
Mass was at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 16 at the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in
Hurley. Burial followed in the Hurley Cemetery. Casket bearers were Tommy

ORELEVEKE: John Oreleveke, well known figure in mining circles here, died Aug,
17 in Oshkosh, Wis. He was president of the Pinos Altos Homestead Mining Co.
prior to its being taken over by the Pinos Altos Mining Co. and also was a noted
figure in pulp board manufacturing and department store enterprises.
O'RILEY: Robert C. O'Riley, 82, a former Deming resident, entered life eternal
Friday in Silver City. He was born Jan. 11, 1911, in Iowa, and was a retired
barber. No services are planned. Cremation was by Baca's Mimbres Crematorium.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick O'Riley of Deming and Michael O'Riley of
Waubay, S.D.; two brothers, Donald O'Riley of Colorado Springs, Colo., and
Clifford O'Riley of Woonsocket, S.D.; and one sister, Darlene Peters of Sutton,
Calif. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
ORMAND: Ben H. Ormand, Sr., president of the Pacific Western Land Company, with
extensive ranch and farm properties in Grant County, Upper Gilt River area, died
Tuesday night in a Phoenix hospital, where he had been under treatment for
several weeks. Coming to Grant County about six years ago Mr. Ormand as
directing head of the land company, began investing in extensive land tracts in
this area. Much of the farming land acquired has Gila River water rights and is
under irrigation. Operations affecting the Pacific Western holdings have been
under the active management of Ben H. Ormand, Jr., associated with his father in
the land corporation. Mr. Ormand began investments in lands in this area because
of his belief in the future progress and growth of Southwestern New Mexico.
Surviving are his wife and son, the family making their home on ranch property
purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Allison on the Cliff Highway. Funeral
arrangements are pending at a mortuary in Phoenix.
ORMAND: Ben Ormand, 68, a longtime resident, died Monday. He graduated from the
University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural
economics. Mr. Ormand was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army
medical division in the South Pacific. He was a Phelps Dodge employee for 35
years, serving as president and general manager of Pacific Western Land Co. He
retired in 1985. Mr. Ormand was a member of the Sunwest Bank board of directors,
the Grant County Christian Radio Association, FGBMFI, the Gila National Forest
Citizens Council and the New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry. He was
a past director of the New Mexico Mining Association and Grant County Manpower
Development Board, district supervisor of the Grant County Soil and Water
Conservation District, a member of the New Mexico Advisory Council of
Environmental Quality, the Regional Environmental Education Research and
Improvement Organization, the Bureau of Land Management in Las Cruces, the
livestock advisory committee of New Mexico State University, the Federation of
Rocky Mountain States Resource Council, the Market Development Council, the New
Mexico Cattle Growers Association, the New Mexico Farm Bureau, the Hillcrest
Hospital board of directors, and the Silver City Consolidated School Board and
was a Western New Mexico University board of regents president. Survivors
include his wife Barbara; their four sons and wives, Michael and Kay Ormand of
Truth or Consequences, Matthew and Leanne Ormand of Silver City, Brian and Julie
Ormand of Las Cruces, and Sean and Leslie Ormand of Roswell; and eight
grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday at Baca's Hillcrest
Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Max Kelley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that contributions be made in Mr. Ormond’s name to the Silver

ORMSBEE: Edith Woodbury Ormsbee, 74, of Walters, Okla., died Thursday, Feb. 3,
after an extended illness.
ORMSBY: Randall H. Ormsby, well known mining man and a former resident of Silver
City, where the family resided for several years, died at Reno. Nev. Funeral
services were held at El Paso, where internment took place. Conducting the rites
was the Rev B M. G. Williams of the St Clements Episcopal church. He is survived
by his wife, Mrs. Nelle G Ormsby of Washington D C , two daughters, Mrs. H L
Curson of Springfield, and Mrs. J B. McKee of Atlanta, two sons, Alex F. Ormsby
of Falls Church, Va., and Dr. Allen I Ormsby of Urbana, Ill. and six
grandchildren.
ORMSBY: Mrs. Rita Ormsby, 35, a former resident of Silver City, died in El Paso
the past week. She was the daughter of Mrs. Agnes Miller. Surviving are her
husband, Justin Ormsby, two young daughters and a son. Burial took place in the
Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
ORNELAS: Frank D. "Pancho" Ornelas, 70, of Loving passed away Saturday, April
24, at Carlsbad Medical Center. Burial took place April 28 at the Loving
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alejandro Parraz Jr., Albino Garcia Jr., Jaime
Grijalva, Antonio Pena Jr., Andrew Parraz, Adrian Garcia and Ramon Ornelas Jr.
Mr. Ornelas was born Jan. 29, 1929, and was raised and educated in Loving. He
joined the U.S. Army at age 15 and served until 1947. He married and joined the
U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1952-54 during the Korean conflict. Following
his discharge, he returned to Loving and began his employment with Steams-Roger.
He moved his family to Bayard in 1966 and worked at Phelps Dodge in Tyrone until
his retirement in 1983. He returned to Loving in 1983. Mr. Ornelas was a member
of the Cristo Rey Catholic Church in Malaga, the Marine Corps League and the
American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Angelita F. Ornelas of
Loving; two sons, Frank Ornelas Jr. of Carlsbad and Ramon Ornelas of Loving; six
daughters, Ida O. Parraz, Beatrice O. Grijalva, Linda Hinojos and Angela
Cordova, all of Loving; Yolanda O. Garcia of Carlsbad and Irma O. Pena of Santa
Clara; a brother, Roberto Ornelas of Carlsbad; a sister, Ramona Fuentes of
Loving; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great- grandchildren.
ORNELAS: Julia Hernandez Ornelas, 84, died Tuesday morning in Silver City. Mrs.
Ornelas was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and was a longtime resident of Grant
County. She was a communicant of the Saint Francis Newman Center. Mrs. Ornelas
is survived by three daughters, Julia Morones and Reyes Corral, both of Silver
City, and Angela Brewer of Louisiana; three sons, Victor Ornelas of Silver City,
Joe Ornelas of Tucson, Ariz., and B.J. Ornelas of Silver City; 22 grandchildren,
18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Rosary recitation will be
held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Wheeler Funeral Home chapel with Deacon Johnny
Perez officiating and Mass of the Resurrection will celebrated at 10 am Friday
in the Saint Frances Newman Center with the Rev Thomas Perez officiating.
Internment will follow in the Silver city Catholic cemetery. Serving as

OROSCO: Eddie Jose Orosco, 30, died Saturday, Dec. 23. Mr. Orosco was born in
Santa Rita and was a life long resident of Grant County. He is survived by his
daughter, Stephanie Marie Orosco of Bayard, his father, Ysabel Orosco of San
Lorenzo, his aunt, Lorenza Portillo of Bayard, three sisters, Mrs. Lucy
Hernandez of Bayard, Mrs. Terry Flores of Tucson, Arizona, Socorro Orosco of
Bayard, and two brothers, Lorenzo Orosco and Tony Orosco, both of Bayard. Rosary
recitation will be 7:30 p.m. in the Curtis-Bright Chapel, today, December 28.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 9:30 a.m. Friday in the San Lorenzo Catholic
Church. Burial will follow in the San Lorenzo Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers

OROSCO: Mrs. Estefana Orosco, 73, died at Socorro the past week. She was a
life-long resident of Grant County. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Merced
Telles and Mrs. Manuel Jimenez, of Bayard; a son, Simon Molina, Glendale, Ariz.,
and a brother, Manual Orosco, Compton, Calif. Mass was said at the Bayard
Catholic Church Tuesday morning, followed by burial In the Hanover cemetery
under direction of the Cox Mortuary.
OROSCO: Jose Orosco, 37, resident of San Lorenzo was killed Tuesday afternoon in
a traffic accident on Highway 61 near the W. H. Acklin store, when a pickup in
which he was riding overturned. Investigating officers said Orosco was riding in
the back of the truck being driven by a 14-year-old boy. Also riding in the
truck was Refugio Garcia, 37, also of San Lorenzo, who was injured and treated
at Hillcrest Hospital. Two other persons in the truck escaped injury. The
accident was investigated by Sheriff Steve Aguirre and State Police Patrolman
Gene Tow. It was Grant County's second highway fatality so far this year.
Survivors are the widow, a daughter, three brothers and five sisters. Rosary
services will be held at 8:15 p.m. Thursday in the Curtis Mortuary chapel.
Funeral mass will be said Friday at 9:30 a.m. inthe San Lorenzo Catholic Church,
the Rev. Arthur Morgan officiating. Burial will be held in the San Lorenzo

OROSCO: Roberto Orosco, 68, a former Silver City resident, passed away at his
home in Perris, Calif., on Monday. Mr. Orosco was a member of the Roman Catholic

Funeral Home in Cypress, Calif. The funeral liturgy will be held at Holy Family
Catholic Church in Artesia, Calif., on Monday at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at
Forest Lawn and Cypress Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Amelia, of the
home; five daughters, Yolanda, Corina, Christina and Belen of California, and
Ann of Texas; two sons, Rudy and Richard of California; two sisters, Vita
Valencia of Mimbres and Adela Arellano of California; one brother, Ernesto
Altamirano of Silver City; and 29 grandchildren.
OROSCO: Rosa Tellez Orosco, 88, died Wednesday in Bayard. Mrs. Orosco was born
in Pinos Altos and was a lifelong resident of Grant County. She was a
communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard. Mrs. Orosco is
survived by a daughter, Anselma Orosco Lucero of Bayard; a son, Manuel Tellez
Orosco, also of Bayard; 10 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 2
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Santana
Orosco on Nov. 4, 1964 and a son, Theodore Tellez Orosco on Feb. 14, 1938.
Visitation was to be held today from 1-3 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home
Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic
Church in Bayard with burial following at the Hanover Cemetery. The Rev. Ricardo

OROZCO: Lorenzo S. Orozco, 74, a resident of Los Angeles, entered eternal life
Sunday, March 13, at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, Calif. He was born to
Alfonso and Justa Soto Orozco in San Lorenzo on June 23, 1919. He was raised in
Grant County and worked at the Blackhawk Mine in Vanadium before going into the
Army. Mr. Orozco lived in Los Angeles until his death. Survivors include his
wife, Mary Orozco of Los Angeles; a daughter, Sally Orozco of Los Angeles; four
sons, David, Richard, and Steve Orozco, all of Los Angeles, and Frank Orozco of
France; a sister, Lala Silva of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Anselmo Orozco, and
his wife, Minnie, of Compton, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces,
nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Justa Orozco, in
1939; his father, Alfonso Orozco, in 1954; his son, Albert Orozco, in 1976; and
his sister, Angie Ballard, in 1990. The funeral liturgy was celebrated March 18
at St. Eloise in Los Angeles. The rate of committal with military honors
followed at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.
OROZCO: Mrs. Luz M. Orozco, 82, a native of Mexico, died Monday at her home in
Bayard. The deceased had lived in Grant County for54 years. Survivors are a
daughter, Mrs. Flora O. Rios, of Bayard; three grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Rosary services were held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the
Curtis Mortuary chapel. Funeral mass was said at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bayard
Catholic Church. Burial was in the Hurley Cemetery.
OROZCO: Timothy Luna Orozco, 18, of Santa Clara passed away Monday in Santa
Clara. A vigil service will be conducted tonight at 7 at Bright Funeral Home.

Clara Roman Catholic Church with Father Mike Lindsay officiating. Interment will
be in the Santa Clara Cemetery. He was born May 4, 1979, in Silver City, the son
of Debra Ann Luna Orozco. He is survived by his mother; his maternal
grandmother, Sister Luna of Santa Clara; three uncles, Able T. Luna and his
wife, Celia, of El Paso, Texas, Michael D. Luna and his wife, Judy. of Las
Cruces, and Max T. Luna of Truth or Consequences; three aunts, Nadine Collins
and her husband, Jim, of Rockville Md.,., Norma Luna of Silver City, and Maxine
D. Allensworth of Silver City; a special friend and companion Desiree Jasso, and
son, Michael: his cousins, Ralph Holguin Jr., Casey Holguin, Elisha LaBrecque,
Brandon, Ashley and Krista Allensworth, Albert, Edna and Kay Collins, and
Michael Luna Jr., Adam Luna, and Art and Patrick Luna; special friends, Linda

ORR: C.O. "Bill" Orr, 79, resident of 818 S. 10th Street died at his home Nov.
29, 1984. He was born Feb. 24, 1905 in Henrietta, Ok and came to Deming in 1953
from Silver City. He was past president of the Deming Optimist Club and was a
member of the First Baptist Church. He owned and operated Continental Oil
Company for ten years in Deming and the Orr Brothers Chrysler Dealership for
fourteen years. Funeral services were at Baca's Wheeler Funeral Chapel. Rev. Jim
Prince of the First Baptist Church officiated and interment followed at Mountain
View Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Orr of the home; two
daughters, Nita Nannette Orr, Deming and Marcia Kaye Weaver, Brentwood, CA, one
brother, Ralph Orr, Redlands CA; one sister, Mrs. Richard Morton, Hennepin, OK

ORR: Grace Hazel Orr, 80, of Silver City passed away Tuesday, Aug 25, at Horizon
Southwest Nursing Home. The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home

in the Masonic Cemetery in Silver City, with the Rev. Nelson Dorr officiating.
She was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Choctaw County, Okla., the daughter of Matt
Monroe Dollar and Mattie Coldonia Dollar. She married Taylor Bradley Orr on Nov.
23, 1935, in McClam County, Okla. Mrs. Orr is survived by two sons, Paul and his
wife, Jean, of Arenas Valley, and Gary Donald Orr of Casper, Wyo.; one sister,
Lovie Baker, and her husband, E.D., of Tyrone; eight, grandchildren, Bradley Orr
and his wife, Bonnie, of Elko, NV, Keith Orr and his wife Shelley of Safford,
Ariz; Todd Orr and his wife, Delphie, of Silver City, Erin Shreeves and her
husband, Mike of Oregon; Ely Orr and his wife, Jill, of North Dakota, J.R. Orr
and his wife, Veta, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marshall Orr and Michael Orr, of
Casper, WY and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents
and her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Orr moved from Oklahoma to Ajo, Ariz., where they
worked for Phelps Dodge until he retired and they moved to Silver City to be
nearer close relatives. Mrs. Orr was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She
loved to travel before her health began to fail. Mrs. Orr was, an excellent cook
and seamstress, and her happiest times were spent visiting and cooking and
sewing for her family. She was so happy about the fact she had been able to be
with all of her grandsons this past year. Pallbearers for Mrs. Orr’s service

ORR: Taylor B. Orr, 70, died March 26 in Silver City. Orr was born Dec.29, 1911,
in Maysville, OK, the son of John and Ada Evans Orr. He was shovel repair
mechanic with Phelps Dodge for 25 years before retiring as a foreman in 1975. In
1978 he became a resident of Silver City and a member of the Calvary Baptist
Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #36 F&AM of Ajo, Ariz. He is
survived by his wife, Grace Orr of Silver City; two sons, Paul Orr of Silver
City and Garry Orr of Tyrone; five sisters Opal Woods and Jewell Dunn of Wayne,
OK, Adalee Johnson of Dallas, Helen Bennett and Paralee Orr of Oklahoma City;
one brother, John Orr of Monroe, Okla.; nine grandchildren and two great
grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Services were held March 29 in
the Curtis-Bright Chapel with Rev. Mickey West officiating. Arraignments by the

ORTEGA: Beatriz M "Tia Betty" Ortega, 78, a lifelong Grant County resident,
entered into rest Wednesday at Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was born Feb. 6,
1916, in Santa Rita to the late Eulogio and Eulogia Martinez Ortega. She retired
from Fort Bayard Medical Center as a kitchen and nurse's aide. She will be
remembered as a great cook and very loving person. She is greatly loved by all
her nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Calling hours will be from 3-9 p.m.
Sunday at Baca's Funeral Chapels with Deacon Johnnie Perez reciting the rosary
at 7. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Our
Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard with the Rev. Paulus Kao officiating.
Burial will follow at the Hanover Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Ray Rivera,
Arturo Castailon, Michael Aguirre, Rudy Ortega, Ted Lozano and Oscar Ortega.
Honorary bearers will be Arthur, Eddie and Paul Castañon, David Aguirre, Johnnie
Ortega and Armando Ortega. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins,
friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters
many years ago. One brother, Jesus Jose Ortega, passed away more recently, in

ORTEGA: Benito F. Ortega died in Albuquerque Oct. 8. Mr. Ortega was a life-long
resident of Grant County. He is survived by three sons, Eustazuio, Modesto, and
Tony Ortega, all of Central; four daughters, Petra Kirker, Manuela Gonzales,
Mary Lou Maynes, all of Central, and Benita Jaramillo of Albuquerque; three
sisters, Louisa Varuela of Pecos, Dahlia Gonzales of Glorieta and Estella
Quintana, also of Pecos; two brothers, Vicente and Anselmo Quintana, also of
Pecos; 28 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mr. Ortega was preceded in
death by his wife, Frances, on April 13, 1972. Rosary service was Sunday Oct.
11, at 7 p.m. in the Wheeler Chapel. Mass was Monday at 10 a.m. at Santa Clara
Church in Central, Father Paul officiating. Burial was also in Central.
Pallbearers were Sammy Gonzales Jr., Bobby Gonzales, Freddie Maynes, Alvin
Kirker, Chris Ortega and Frank Kirker, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Silva,

ORTEGA: Carmen M. Ortega, 77, a resident of Bayard, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17
in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima
Church in Bayard. Survivors are a sister, Beatrice Ortega, and a brother, Jose
Ortega, who live near Santa Rita; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation
will be Friday, Jan. 20, from 2-4 p.m. in the chapel of the Wheeler Funeral
Home. Rosary recitation will follow at 5 p.m., also in the Wheeler Funeral Home
chapel, with Deacon Alfonso Alvarado officiating. Mass of the Resurrection will
be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, in our Lady of Fatima Church in
Bayard, also with Alvarado officiating. Interment will follow in the Hanover

ORTEGA: Mrs. Frances Q. Ortega. 56, passed away at the Ft. Bayard Medical Center
April 13 following an extended illness Mrs. Ortega was a native of Pecos, and
had lived in Central most of her life. Survivors include her husband, Benito of
Central, three sons; Eustaqulo of Grants, Modesto of Silver City, and Tony of
Central: four daughters, Mrs. Petra Kirker, Mrs. Manuela Gonzales, Mrs. Mary Lu

ORTEGA: Gregorio Trujillo Ortega, 74, a Grant Count., resident, entered eternal
life Thursday, Feb. 25, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. He was born Oct. 12,
1924, in Chiz, NM, to the late Pedro and Clarita (Trujillo) Ortega. He was a
retired grounds keeper in Tyrone and World War II veteran. Visitation will be

ORTEGA: Guillermo "Blue" Ortega, 78, a resident of Lordsburg, passed away Sunday
in a veteran’s hospital in Tucson, Ariz. He was born Nov. 5, 1916 to Gertrudis
and Petra (Madrid) Ortega in Morenci, Ariz. and grew up in Duncan, Ariz. He was
a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was
also a recipient of the Bronze Star. He married Virginia Martin on July 4, 1950
in Morenci. Mr. Ortega was an underground miner and was known by his co-workers
in the mining industry as a dependable, hard-working man. He is survived by his
daughter, Elvira Newell, and her husband, Bill of Lordsburg; four sons, Robert
Ortega and his wife, Arlene of Winkelman, Ariz., Ralph M. Ortega and his wife,
Sabrina, also of Winkelman, Gilbert Ortega of Tucson and Daniel Ortega, also of
Tucson; three sisters, Gertrude Gonzales of Clifton, Ariz., Teresa Andazola,
also of Clifton, and Alta Perez of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Ramon Madrid, and his
wife Mary Louise of Thatcher, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two
great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ortega in
1990; a son, Guillermo Ortega Jr. in 1967; and a brother, Henry Madrid in 1961.
Visitation will begin at six this evening in the Lordsburg Funeral Home chapel
and will continue until the rosary is recited at 7 p.m. The funeral liturgy will
begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Rafael
Perez celebrating. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. (noon New Mexico time)
in the Duncan Cemetery in Duncan. Serving as pallbearers will be Randy Ortega,
Guillermo Ortega III, Wally Sanchez, Manuel Sanchez, Emilio Madrid and Ramon
Mata. Family members selected Lordsburg Funeral Home to serve them.
ORTEGA: Horacio S. Ortega, 27, of Santa Rita, died Sunday, in Hillcrest General
Hospital. He was a former employee of Chino Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp. He is
survived by his wife Mrs. Margaret Ortega, a step-daughter; his parents, four
brothers and three sisters. Rosary services were held Monday evening at the
Santa Rita Catholic Church . Funeral mass was said at the church at 10 A.M.
Tuesday, the Rev. Fr. Julian Ordonez officiating. Burial was in the Hanover
cemetery under direction of the Curtis Mortuary.
ORTEGA: Mrs. Iria P. Ortega, 54, of Silver City, died Tuesday. She was a member
of a well known family in the community. Survivors are her husband, Manuel
Ortega; three sons, two daughters, one grandchild, four brothers and a sister.
Rosary services were held at the Curtis Mortuary chapel Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral mass was said at 9 am. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,
Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery.
ORTEGA: Jesus Jose Ortega, 90, entered into rest Tuesday at Fort Bayard Medical
Center. he was born May 4, 1903, to the late Eulogio and Eulogia (Martinez)
Ortega. He lived in the Santa Rita and Hanover area most of his life. Mr. Ortega
retired from Chino Mines as a powder-man. He was a communicant of Our Lady of
Fatima Roman Catholic Church of Bayard. Survivors include his sons, Oscar Ortega
of Pico Rivera, Calif., Armando Ortega of Lawton, Okla., Rudolfo Ortega of La
Puente, Calif., and John Ortega of Bayard; his daughters, Oralia O. Gomez of
Gardenia, Calif., Ofelia O. Holguin of Plano, Texas, and Pauline O. Ross of
Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Beatrice Ortega of Fort Bayard; 16 grandchildren;
and 18 great-grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Ortega in death were his wife, Raquel,
and a son, Horac
