BABCOCK: Thomas Forrest Babcock, 68, a resident of Hurley, entered into
eternal rest Monday, Sept. 7, at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born July
16, 1930, in Gleeson, Ariz., to Charles C. and Ruby (Harvey) Babcock. He was a
mechanical engineer with Phelps dodge
Corp. until his retirement in 1993. He will be remembered as having a fabulous
imagination for storytelling. He was a person who was liked by everyone the
moment they met him and in return saw the good in the people he met as he
traveled all over the country. In his travels he never met a stranger. His
hobbies included hunting, fishing, flying, and digging with his Caterpillar. He
is survived by his wife, Betty Babcock of Hurley; three sons, Galen Babcock and
his fiancée, Carolyn, of Lake Charles, La., Bryon Hendrix and his wife, Gina, of
Phoenix, and Brian Babcock; two daughters, Gina Babcock, and Brenda Hendrix
Laughlin and her husband, Tom, of Tulsa, Okla.; a nephew, Bob Babcock, and his
wife, Deb, of Sulphur, La.; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his
brothers-in-law Jim Wolfer of Tucson Ariz., and Jerry Wolfer and his wife,
Luella, of Denver; and special friends, Paul Martinez and his wife, Annie,
Robbie Robertson and his wife, Anita, Annie Montano, Carrie Brown, Jack Johnson
and his wife, Frankie, Ken Grant and his wife, Julie, and the Harris family.
Cremation has taken place by Baca’s Mimbres Crematorium. Family and friends held
private memorial service. Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels.
BARBUTO: Mr. and Mrs.J.A.Boyd received word of the death, as the result of a
heart attack, on March 20, of their son-in-law Capt. Joseph J. Barbuto Jr. 35,
Elgin Air Base Fla. He died in the base hospital following a heart attack at his
home during the night. Capt. Barbuto was at one time stationed in Deming.
BACA: Amelia Parra Baca, 77, of Las Cruces entered eternal life Sunday, Jan. Ii,
at her home. She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Fierro to Jose and Francisca Loera
Parra. She had been a Las Cruces resident for 40 years, going there from Fierro,
where she worked as a postmistress. She was a member of Our Lady of Health
Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Juan D. Baca o• Las Cruces;
three brothers, Eloy Parra and his wife, Minnie, of Silver City, Ernesto Parra
and his wife, Lillian, of Pasco, Wash., and Samuel Parra of Santa Fe; and one
sister, Lilia Gonzales of Bayard. Other survivors include numerous nieces and
nephews. Her parents and a sister, Emma Martinez, preceded her in death. At her
request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.
Thursday in the West Chapel of Baca’s Funeral Chapels in Las Cruces with the
Rev. Narciso Rivera officiating. A graveside service with internment of cremains
will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fort Bayard National Cemetery.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels
of Las Cruces and Baca’s Mimbres Crematory."
BACA: Andrea Madrid Baca, 71, died Thursday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She
was a resident of Hurley and a communicant of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Wilfrano Baca of Honey; a daughter, Aurora
Carrasco of Socorro a son, Rudy Baca of El Paso, Texas two sisters, Adelina
Lopez and Stella Carreon of Hurley two brothers, Fidel Madrid Jr. of Hurley and
Raymond Madrid of Juarez, Mexico; seven grandchildren Rudolph Dean Baca, Gerald
Baca, Crystal Sanchez, Paul Baca, Malisha Majalca, who made her home with and
was raised by Mrs. Baca, Wilfred Baca, Trixie Majalca; and four
great-grandchildren. Rosary will he recited at 7 p.m. Sunday and Mass of the
Resurrection will he celebrated at 10 am. Monday with the Rev Binito Suen
officiating Services will be held at the Infant Jesus Catholic Church. Interment
will follow at the Hurley cemetery.
BACA: Edward C. Baca, 73, a retired Fort Bayard employee who had resided in
Central 34 years, died Sunday at the Veterans Administration hospital at Fort
Bayard.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Clara Baca, of Central; two sons, Randall Baca of
Whittier, Calif., and Tomas of Albuquerque; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine
Rodriguez of Norwalk, Calif., and Mrs. Ella Armijo of Fullerton, Calif.; seven
grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and three sisters. Rosary services were
held Tuesday evening at the Curtis Mortuary chapel. Mass was said at 9:30 a.m.
Wednesday at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central by the Rev. Fr. Casmir
Petraukas. Burial was in the Fort Bayard cemetery.
BACA: Elsie M. Baca, 56, of Oxnard, CA., passed away Wednesday, Oct.21, at. her
residence. Mrs. Baca was born Dec. 1, 1941, in Silver City. She had been a
California resident for 28 years. She was a nutritionist for Oxnard. Unified
School District and was a member of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Mother, Gumersincla Sallard; a sister, Dolores Morales; and a brother, Pete
Ybarra, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 43 1/2 years,
Vidal Baca of Oxnard; her daughters,, Debra (husband Rick)Pankey of Carleton,
Mich., and Doreen (husband Ray) Salinas of Oxnard;, brother Thomas Baca of
Ventura,Calif.; her grandchildren, Benjamin Pankey of Monroe, Mich., James
Pankey of Newport, Mich., Candace Baca and, Samuel Baca Jr. of Receda, Calif.,
and Nicole Baca of Ventura; and her great-grandchildren, Eric Pankey and Shaeahn
Pankey of Monroe, Benjamin Pankey Jr. of Oxnard and Alexis Elisa of Newport.
“Mama, God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms
around you and whispered, ‘Come with me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you
suffer and, saw you fade ‘away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make
you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking, hands at rest. God broke
our hearts to prove he only takes the best.” The funeral liturgy will be
celebrated Saturday at. 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Silver
with Father John Colgan officiating. The rite of committal and burial will
follow at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery.
BACA: Genoveba M Baca, Died Saturday in Silver City. She was born in Mimbres and
was a lifelong resident of Grant County. Mrs. Baca spent most of her time making
a good home for her family. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic
Church. Mrs. Baca is survived by her husband, Jose Baca of Bayard; four
daughters; Sally Morales of Silver city Dora Brewer of Anaheim Calif., Helen B.
Londonado of Roseburg, and Rosa Duarte of Westminster, CA; two sons. Merejildo
Baca of Central, and Richard Baca of Bayard a sister, Louisa Ortiz of Central; a
brother Lucio Marquez of Central; 6 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren. A
daughter Adelina B Martinez on Nov 27, 1984 and a sister Julia M Castillo
preceded her in death on Nov 13 1985. Rosary recitation will be at 7pm at Our
Lady of Fatima in Bayard. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated with the
Rev Thomas Perez at 10am Tuesday. Internment will follow in the Central
cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Louis Duarte, Eddie Baca Sr., Frankie
Morales, Eddie Baca Jr, Tom clay II, and David Madrid. Honorary pallbearers will
be James Brewer, Michael Baca, Travis Brewer, Jonnie F Maldonado Jr, Richard
Maldonado and Steve Morales. Wheeler was in charge.
BACA: Julio Baca, 64, of Silver City, died Monday, following a heart attack at
his home, 12110 Main St. Rosary services were held Tuesday at 7:30 pm at the Cox
mortuary-.chapel. Mass was said at 9 am. Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Church followed by burial the Catholic cemetery.. Surviving are his
wife Mrs. Josefa A. Baca; four sons, Albert, Tommy, Ben and Julian; five
daughters, Mrs. Amelia Salaya, Mrs. Juira Silva, Mary and Josey Baca, Silver
City Mrs. Maud Orozco, Bayard; a brother, Eluterio Baca Longdale, CA and 14
grandchildren.
BACA: Mary Carbajal Baca, 62,a resident of Hurley, entered eternal rest Friday
at Gila Regional Medical Center. Visitation was held at 6 Monday evening at the
Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Hurley, where the prayer vigil was held at 7.
The funeral liturgy was to be celebrated there this morning at 10 with Father
Ray Jackson officiating. The rite of committal and interment followed at the
Hurley Cemetery. She was born Oct. 3., 1935, in Silver City to Pedro Carbajal
and Angela Gomez. She attended Grant County schools and married A.J. “George”
Baca. She was a loving homemaker who enjoyed sewing and cooking. Mrs. Baca was
an active member of the Infant Jesus Parish and was Cursillista. Survivors
include three sons, Joe Baca and his wife, Lisa, of Roswell, Ray Baca and his
wife, Patsy, of Hurley, and Frank Baca and his wife, Anita of Mission, SD; three
daughters, Lupe Gutierrez of Bernalillo, Susie Armendariz and her husband, Mike,
of Bayard, and Lucy Montoya and her husband, Robert, of Tyrone; five brothers,
Nacho Carbajal of Silver City, Ray Carbajal of Riverside, Calif., Frank Carbajal
of Bayard, Felix Carbajal of Albuquerque, and Albert Carbajal of Pueblo, Colo.~
one sister, Angie Carbajal of Tucson, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. Her parents, Pedro and Angela Carbajal; a sister, Lucy Udero,
in 1980; her husband, A.J. “George” Baca, in 1995; and brothers, Pete and Johnny
Carbajal, in 1995, and Rudy Carbajal preceded her in death, in 1996. Casket
bearers will be her grandsons, Mike and Buddy Baca, Eric and Kevin Gutierrez,
and Anthony and Gabriel ~Armendariz. Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral
Chapels, U.S. 180 at Delk Drive, Silver City.
BACA: Death last Friday at her home in Silver City claimed Mrs. Ignavia Baca,
88. She had resided in Grant County many years. Rosary services were held Monday
evening at the Cox Mortuary chapel, followed by mass at 9 am Tuesday in Santa
Clara Catholic Church in Central. Burial took place in the Central cemetery.
Survivors are two sons, Jose D. Baca, Santa Ana, Calif., and Vincente Padilla,
Silver City; three daughters, Pauline Baca, Silver City; Mrs. Juan Gonzalez,
Central: Mrs. Jose Atencio, Hatch; 13 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren."
BACA: Word was received this week of the death of Mrs. Maria L. Baca in
Wilmington,’ Ca. She was 78 years of age and had resided in Grant County since
1920. Her husband Dolores Baca; two sons, Wolfredo L Baca of Hurley and Edward
Baca of Deming; two daughters, Josephine B Dominguez of Silver Bell Az and
Solledad B Delgado of Willmington Ca, 11 grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren, survive her.
BACA: Mrs. Maxina Baca, 66, died at her home on Corbin and Market Sts. Thursday
night after a short illness. The deceased was born in Guadalcaesar, State of San
Luis Potasi, Mexico. She lived in Silver City for the past 45 years. Her only
survivor is her husband,
Ramon M. Baca. Rosary services were held Saturday night at Cox Mortuary. Mass
was held Monday morning and she was buried Monday afternoon at the Catholic
cemetery."
BACA: Ramon T. Baca, a veteran of World War I and life-long resident of Silver
City, died Monday. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Santa Rita Catholic
Church in Deming. Following mass, burial was in the Deming cemetery.

BACA: Alejandro Baca, 54, formally of Faywood, died Friday in Tulare, Calif. Mr.
Baca is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Tulare; two daughters, Janie Ozuna of
San Diego, Calif., and Ellen Russell of Holland; three grandchildren; his
mother, Maria D. Baca of Bayard, two brothers, Jenaro Baca of Faywood and
Roberto Baca of Albuquerque; and three sisters, Andrea Aguilar and Herminia Baca
of Whittier, Calif., and Elosia Madrid of Bayard. His father, Cipriano Baca in
1964; brothers Salvador Baca in 1946, and Luis Baca in 1969; and a son,
Alejandro Jr., preceded him in death in 1980. Graveside services will be held in
Tulare Wednesday at 2 p.m.
BACA: Amelia R. Baca, 60, died Sunday, January 21, in El Paso, Texas. Mrs. Baca
was born in Gila and was a long time resident of Grant County. She is survived
by her husband Tomas A. Baca,three daughters, Mrs. Manuela Jankins of Lansing,
Michigan, Mrs. Irene Betancur of Alamogordo, Mrs. Florence Armendariz of Clovis,
two sons, Fred Baca of Silver City and John Baca of Alamogordo, Also surviving
Baca: Antonio Jorge "George" Baca of Hurley entered into rest Sunday at Gila
Regional Medical Center. He was born April 23, 1936 in Hurley and had been a
lifetime Grant County resident. Mr. Baca was a smelter mechanic at Chino Mines,
where he had been employed since 1954. He was a member of Infant Jesus Catholic
Church of Hurley. He was a lector and was involved with the choir. Mr. Baca was
a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bayard and was a Cursillista. Calling
hours are from 3-5 this afternoon in Baca's Funeral Chapels. The prayer vigil
will be held tonight at seven at Infant Jesus Catholic Church, where the funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The rite of committal and burial
will follow in the Hurley Cemetery. The Rev. John Jusseaume will officiate at
all services. Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Baca of Hurley; three sons,
Joe Baca and his wife, Lisa of Roswell, Ray Baca and his wife, Patsy of Hurley,
and Frank Baca and his wife, Anita of Highmore, S.D.; three daughters, Lupe
Gutierrez and her husband, Thomas of Rio Rancho, Susie Armendariz and her
husband, Michael of Bayard, and Lucy Baca of Hurley; and 16 grandchildren,
Adrienne Harvey and her husband, Chad, Mike Baca, Nicole Baca, Buddy Baca,
Michelle Baca, Elizabeth Baca, Johnnie Baca, Frankie Baca, Eric Gutierrez, Kevin
Gutierrez, Brian Gutierrez, Jacob Gutierrez, Anthony Armendariz, Monica
Armendariz, Gabriel Armendariz and Amy Armendariz. His parents, Frank T. Baca on
Nov. 2, 1965 and Paula C. Baca on April 14, 1979, preceded him in death. Casket
bearers will be Mike Baca, Eric Gutierrez, Anthony Armendariz, Johnny Cardoza,
Frank Carbajal Sr., Genaro Baca, Ray Apodaca and Willie Zapata. Honorary bearers
are all his relatives, compadres and friends. Entrusted to the care of Baca's

Baca: Cornelio Candelaria Baca, 71, a longtime resident of Central, entered
eternal rest Friday at Gila Regional Medical Center. Visitation began at 2 this
afternoon at Baca's Funeral Chapels and the vigil service will be held there
this evening at 7. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday morning at
10at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central. The Rev. Mike Lindsay, pastor, will
officiate. Concluding services and interment will follow at Fort Bayard National
Cemetery with veteran’s honors according by Allingham-Golding Post No. 18 of the
American Legion. He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Monticello and was an Army veteran
of World War II, serving as a heavy-machine gunner in Normandy, Ardennes,
Rhineland, and central Europe. Mr. Baca married Pia Maria Gavaldon in 1946 and
moved to Grant County in 1947. He was employed as a lead repairman at Chino
Mines for 35 years. He retired in 1977 and was a member of the Santa Clara
Parish. Survivors include his wife, Pia Baca, of the home, two sons, Vivian Baca
and his wife, Darlene, of Gallup, and Richard Baca and his wife, Lola, of
Albuquerque; two daughters, Clara of Albuquerque and Annie Baca of Central; a
brother, Tommy Baca of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren, Vicky and Frank Gaona
III, Veronica Martinez, Freddy, Anita Marie, Denise and Cheryl Allan Baca, and
Apache Bill Young; and two great grandchildren, Sammy and Samantha Zamora.
Pallbearers will be Frank Gaona II, Frank Gaona III, Apache Bill Young, Freddy
Baca, Isidro Lucero and George Bierner. Honorary bearers named are Larry Gurule
and Tony Luna. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels in Silver City.
BACA: W.L. Baca, resident of Hurley, was advised this week of the death of his
father, Dolores Baca, 89, in Wilmington, Calif. The deceased formerly lived in
Bayard where he was a carpenter, retiring some years ago.
BACA: Elauterio Baca, a former resident of Silver City, passed away June 19 in
San Jacinto, Calif. He was born Sept. 6, 1909 to Torivio and Florencia M. Baca.
He was a loving father, grandfather and uncle. He loved music and played the
harmonica, violin, guitar and other instruments. He is survived by his son, Ted
Baca and his wife, Dolores, of Temecula, Calif.; and three grandsons and their
wives, a granddaughter and her husband, and seven great-grandchildren, all of
California. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Silver City and California
also survive him. His wife of 50 years, Jewell G. Baca, in February 1981; two
brothers, Ramon and Julio; and a sister, Francisca, all of Silver City, preceded
him in death. Funeral services were held in Hemet, Calif., June 23.
BACA: Elena Dominguez Baca, 79, a lifelong Grant County resident, died Friday in
Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 15, 1909 in Swartz to two of New
Mexico's pioneer families which homesteaded in the Mimbres Valley--the Dominguez
and Swartz families. She was a homemaker until her illness prevented it and she
spent the last several years in the Homestead Rest Home. She was a member of San
Jose Catholic Church of Faywood and the Apostleship of Prayer. Calling hours at
Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapel in Silver City will be from 2-9 p.m. today where
rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Ricardo Hinojal, Order of
Augustinian Recollect, officiating. Calling hours at Baca's Funeral Chapel in
Deming will be from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday and rosary services will be held at 7 p.m.
in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Deming with the Rev. Francisco Irisarri, O.A.R.,
officiating. Mass of the Christian burial will be concelebrated Wednesday at 10
a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church with Bishop Ricardo Ramirez and his brother
priests concelebrating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in
Deming. Survivors include her husband, Eduardo, of Faywood; five sons, Adan of
Deming, Ramon of Faywood, and Julian, Fernando "Buddy" and the Honorable Sam
Baca of Deming; one daughter, Nora Baca of Deming; four brothers, Valentine
Dominguez of Faywood, George Dominguez of Bayard, and Joe and Tom Dominguez of
Deming; five sisters, Camilla Lucero, Alberta Galindo and Mary Lozano of Deming,
Eva Ortega of Selma, Calif., and Georgia Cortez of Los Angeles, Calif.; 24
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Casket bearers will be her grandsons and honorary bearers will be Manuel
Carrillo, Joe B. Dominguez, Dr. George W. O'Sullivan and Angel Zuniga. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Georgia Dominguez; by two brothers,
Juan and Ramon Dominguez; and one sister, Rosie Lucero. Entrusted to the care of
Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
Baca: Eugene Baca, 61, a resident of Silver City, died Friday evening at Gila
Regional Medical Center. Arrangements have been entrusted to Baca's Hillcrest
Funeral Chapels.
Baca: Florencia M. Baca, 88, a life-long resident of Silver City died at her
home Saturday. Two sons, Julio and Elauterio of Silver City; 17 grandchildren
and 27 greatgrandchildren survive her.
BACA: Greg Baca, 28, of Bayard died March 6. He was born June 4,1953 in Silver
City, the son of Frank and Lydia Perez Baca, and lived in the Silver City area
all of his life. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Bayard. His parents of Bayard; his grandmother, Genevieve Baca of Deming; two
sisters, Pamela Baca of Cloudcroft and Michelle Baca of Bayard; two brothers,
Elmo Baca of Joseph City, Ariz. and Jerry Baca of T or C; several aunts and
uncles survive him. Rosary was recited March 8 in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home
Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic
Church on March 9. Burial followed in the Hurley Cemetery, both services under
the direction of Rev. Fr. Estevan Lopez. Serving as pallbearers were Abie Parra,
Jr., Eloy Norero, Manuel Maldonado, Frank Ornelas, Gary Ortega and Frank Godoy.
The family requests that friends who wish may donate to the American Cancer

BACA: Jose Domingo Baca, 84, longtime Grant County resident, died Wednesday
morning in Fountain Valley, Calif. He was born June 15, 1903 in Sierra County
and was retired from Kennecott Corp. where he worked more than 37 years. He was
a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard. Calling hours
will begin at 2 this afternoon in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. The rosary
service will be there at 7 this evening. Mass of the Christian burial will be
celebrated Tuesday morning at 10 in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard
and interment will follow in the Central Cemetery. The Augustinian Recollects
will officiate. Survivors include two sons, Richard Baca of Bayard and Merejildo
Baca of Central; four daughters, Rosa Duarte of San Bernardino, Calif., Helen
Maldonado of Roseburg, Ore., Dora Brewer of Santa Ana, Calif., and Sally Morales
of Silver City; a sister, Paulita Baca of Silver City; 27 grandchildren; and 40
great-grandchildren. His wife, Genoveva, in 1985, and a daughter, Adelina
Martinez, preceded him in death in 1984. Casket bearers will be Frankie Morales,
Luis Duarte, Richard and Eddie Baca, and James and Travis Brewer. Honorary
bearers listed are Stevie Morales, Rudy Martinez, and Johnny and Richard
Maldonado. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
BACA: Josefa A. Baca, 92, died Wednesday at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Mrs.
Baca was born March 19, 1898 in El Paso Texas to Cleofas Sanchez Arroyo and
Monico Arroyo. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Grant County and all
of the children still live in the area. She was a parishioner of St. Vincent's
Catholic Church and active in senior citizens activities in Silver City.
Services were held today in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with concluding
services in the Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Rod Nichols officiated. Survivors
are four sons, Julian, Ben, Tommy and Albert Baca; five daughters, Nellie Leyba,
Esperanza Silva, Mary Chavez, Josie Madrid and Frances Orosco; three sisters,
Angelita Duarte, Paula Arroyos and Tillie Rangel; twenty four grandchildren;
forty great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews. Her husband, Julio Baca, preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1959.
Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.

BACA: Maria C. Baca, 81, a resident of Hurley, entered into eternal rest at her
home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Baca was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Dwyer to
Juan M. and Mercedes Regalado Chacon. She was a homemaker and a communicant of
Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Hurley. She is Survived by five sons, Ramon Baca
and his wife, Carmen, of Faywood, Vidal Baca Jr. and his wife, Elsie, of Oxnard,
Calif., Reynaldo Baca of Silver City Jimmy Baca and His wife, Della, of Hurley,
and Elfego Baca and his wife, Sally, of Silver City; four daughters, Magdalena
B. Castorena of Alamogordo, Julia Hernandez of Carson, Calif., Corina Chavez and
her husband, Joe, of Silver City, and Gloria Corral her husband Bobby, also of
Silver City; two brothers, Ramon R. Chacon of Central and Abran R. Chacon of
Faywood; three sisters, Manuela Carrillo of Faywood, Elvira Ramirez of Anaheim,
Calif., and Frances Pena of Faywood; 43 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren;
and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded into death in October of
last year by her husband of 62 years, Vidal M. Baca. Visitation will be held
Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels, followed by the rosary at 7
with Deacon Johnnie Perez reciting. The mass of resurrection will be celebrated
at 10 in the morning Friday at San Jose Catholic Church in Faywood with the Rev.
Sam Garcia officiating. Burial will follow at the Faywood Cemetery. Serving as
casket bearers will be Joel Alarcon, Manuel B. Hernandez, Eddie Corral, Ronnie

BACA: Maria Dominguez Baca, 92, a former Faywood resident, passed away Tuesday
at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home. Visitation was to begin at 2 this afternoon at
Baca’s Funeral Chapels in Deming with the prayer vigil following there at 7.
Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10 at San Jose
Catholic Church in Dwyer with the Rev. Dan Porter officiating. Concluding
services and burial will follow at the Dwyer Cemetery. She was born Aug. 5,
1905, in San Lorenzo to Valentine Dominguez and Rafaela Marquez. On Nov 4, 1925
she married Cipriano Baca. She was a homemaker and a communicant of the Catholic
Church. She passed away on her 72nd wedding anniversary. Survivors include two
sons, Genaro Baca and his wife, Nellie, of Dwyer, and Roberto Baca and his wife,
Dolores, of Albuquerque; three daughters, Andrea Aguilar and her husband,
Ernesto, of Whittier, Calif., Eloisa Madrid and her husband, Paul, of Bayard,
and Herminia “Minnie” Strickland and her husband, Norm, of Apollo, Pa.; 16
grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and special
friends, Cecilia Serna, Gloria Mudge and Glenna Hobbs. Her husband, Cipriano T.
Baca; three sons, Salvador, Luis and Alejandro Baca; a grandson, Alex Baca Jr.;
and one great-grandson, Jude Sierra, preceded her in death. Serving as
pallbearers will be Bernardo Chavira, Rudy Dominguez, Ray Dominguez, Benny
Madrid, Robert S. Baca and Arturo Aguilar. Honorary pallbearers are all of her

BACA: Paula P. Baca, 87, died Sunday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was
born Jan. 26, 1901, in New Mexico and had been a long-time resident of Grant
County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints. Calling hours will be from 5-9 this evening in Baca's
Hillcrest Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Silver City with Oscar Davis
presiding. Interment will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery. Survivors are numerous
nieces and nephews. Her brothers, Jose D. Baca and Vicente Baca, and a sister,
Gregoria Gonzales, preceded her in death. Casket bearers will be Nach Morales,
Ted Brewer, Lalo Peru, Richard Baca, Travis Brewer Jr. and Eddie Baca. Entrusted

BACA: Ramon Baca, 54, died Monday of last week in El Paso. He had been a
lifetime resident of Silver City and was formerly employed by J.J. Robertson,
plumber. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. T.S. Baca and two brothers, Julio
and Eluterio, all of Silver City. Rosary services were held Wednesday evening at
seven o'clock at the Cox Mortuary Chapel. Mass was held at nine o'clock Thursday
morning at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. John P. Linnane
officiating. Burial was at 3:30 Thursday afternoon in the Catholic cemetery.
BACA: Ramona Chavez Baca, 88, a former Faywood resident, died early Thursday
morning in St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born Aug. 31, 1900, in
Tularosa, and was a communicant of the Catholic Church. For many years she lived
in the Mimbres Valley and moved to Albuquerque in 1964. Visitation will be from
1-5 Monday afternoon in Baca's Funeral Chapel. The rosary will be that evening
at 7:30 in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Deming. Mass will be there Tuesday at 10
a.m. The Augustinian Recollects will officiate and interment will follow in the
Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include eight sons, Alfred of Hurley, Tom of
Santa Ana, Calif., Edward of Bayard, Gene of Silver City, Joe of Alamogordo,
Elfego of Tucson, Ariz., and Jeff and Ray of Albuquerque; three daughters,
Carolina Garcia of Bayard, Mary Torres of Deming and Margaret C. Baca of
Albuquerque; two sisters, Gregoria Regalado of Grand Junction, Colo., and
Manuela Trujillo of Albuquerque; 37 grandchildren; and 3l great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon, in 1956; a son Porfirio, in
1957; and last week by a sister, Maria Pena. Entrusted to the care of Baca's
Funeral Chapels of Deming.
Baca: Valentine (Tino) Baca, 42 of Deming, died Saturday night at Mimbres
Memorial Hospital in Deming. Baca was born January 25, 1940 at Dwyer and had
been a lifelong area resident. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Rosary services were held May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Mass of the Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann's. Fr. Mike
Macaya officiated and burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Baca is
survived by his wife, Minnie Baca, of Deming; seven sons, Valentine Baca, Jr.,
Richard, Gilbert, Stevie, Peter and Adam, all of Deming; seven daughters, Janie
Macias, Lily Rodriguez, Helen, Jessie, Anita, Alicia and Sandra Baca of Deming;
three brothers, Nabor, Pete and Richard of Deming; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Robert C. Hernandez, Leroy Macias, Rodrigo Dominguez, Arturo
Hernandez, Henry Sanchez and Isidro Madrid. The Wheeler Mortuary was in charge
of arrangements.
BACA: Vidal M. Baca, 84, a Hurley resident, entered eternal rest Saturday at
Gila Regional Medical Center. Mr. Baca was born Oct. 8, 1909, in Dwyer. He
married Maria Chacon in 1932 and moved to Hurley, where he worked for Chino
Mines as an oiler until his retirement in 1967. He is survived by his wife of 62
years, Maria C. Baca of the home; five sons, Ramon Baca and his wife, Carmen, of
Faywood, Vidal Baca Jr. and his wife, Elsie, of Oxnard, Calif., Rayny Baca and
his wife, Genevieve, of Silver City, Jimmy Baca and his wife, Della, of Hurley,
and Elfego Baca and his wife, Sally, of Silver City; four daughters, Lena B.

BACA: Ambrosio E. Baca, 78, a resident of Fort Bayard, entered into rest
Wednesday at Fort Bayard'
Medical Center. He was born Dec. 23, 1917 in Springerville, Ariz., to Thomas C.
and Grizelda Candelaria Baca.
He was a member of American Legion John Hans Post No.42 and a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars in
Springerville. He was the oldest Foster Parent in Arizona when he first became a
Foster Parent. Calling hours will be from 5-7 this evening in Baca's Funeral
Chapels with the prayer vigil at 7. Deacon Johnnie Perez will recite the rosary.

BACA: Eduardo T. Baca, 88, a longtime Faywood resident, passed away Sunday at
Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home in Deming. Visitation will be from 3 to 5
Wednesday afternoon at Baca's Funeral Chapels in Deming. The vigil service will
begin that evening at 7 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Deming and the funeral
liturgy will be concelebrated there Thursday morning at 10 with His Excellency,

He was born June 19,1907, at the Soliz Ranch in the Lower Mimbres Valley to
Ramon Baca and Porfiria Trujillo. On Feb. 6,
1930, he married Elena Dominguez and they were the parents of seven children.
All of his working life he was a farmer at the family homestead established by
his parents at Faywood. He had a great love of music and was a self-taught
accomplished musician on many instruments. The fiddle was his favorite. For
years, he and his family played at many functions in the area. Four years ago,
he left the family farm and moved to Deming, where he was a communicant at St.
Ann's Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Nora Baca of Deming; five
sons, Adan, Julian, Fernando ""Buddy"" and Mayor Sam Baca of, Deming, and
Ramon D; Baca of Faywood; a brother, Fred Baca of Deming a sister, Virginia T.
Baca of Las Cruces; 23 grandchildren 33 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ramon, Jose,
Francisco and Cipriano Baca; three sisters, Elena Chavira, Maria Soliz and
Guadalupe Rael; an infant daughter, Clara; his wife, Elena, who died Feb. 5,
1988; two
great granddaughters, Andrea Baca, in 1989, and Jennifer Anne Orozco, in 1975;
and a grandson, Johnny Salaiz, in 1995. Serving as pallbearers will be Antonio
Baca, Alfreclo Baca, Jenaro Baca, Bernardo
Chavira, Ray Baca, Anselmo Rael and Charlie Vigil. Entrusted to the care of

BACK: Laura Elizabeth Back, former Beth Goforth Turner, 71, of Globe, Ariz.,
passed away Tuesday in Globe. Mrs. Back was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Santa Rita to
Leslie Kimball and Francis Elizabeth (Maheny) Goforth. The Goforth family was a
pioneer family in the Mimbres Valley in the mid-1800s. Mrs. Back was a member of
Santa Rita-Arenas Valley Community Church and a member and past president of the
Silver City Woman's Club. She was a life and charter member of the Black Range
Artists Association and was named "Artist of the Year." Her work was in copper
construction and ceramics, and stretching glass into unusual forms. She also
organized many arts and crafts clubs, and judged many shows throughout the
Southwest. Mrs. Back sponsored and organized many youth organizations. She was a
member of the Order of Eastern Star of Silver City, past mother adviser of the
Order of Rainbow for Girls, and recipient of the Grand Cross of Colors. Mrs.
Back presented to Western New Mexico University in Silver City, "The Goforth-Pike
Butterfly Collection," consisting of more than 300 butterflies, which led to the
science department receiving a state grant for research. She was a member of the
Audubon Society, was very active in the Silver City Parent-Teacher Association,
and was instrumental in getting the school bond passed for Stout School. Her
latest hobbies had been compiling old photographs, many of which were taken by
her father, and doing research with members of the Rio Grande Historical
Collectors at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Mrs. Back was active in
the American Cancer Society for 25 years. She served as crusade chairwoman, was
southwestern New Mexico director, and served five years on the state executive
board. She was active in New Mexico state politics and with the League of Women
voters. Mrs. Back is survived by her husband, Gail T. Back of Globe, her mother,
Fannie E. Goforth of Whitfield, Miss.; two sons, Donald Lee Turner of Silver
City and Jerry Kimball Turner of Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Jorene Turner
Carpenter of Detroit, Texas; an honorary daughter, Tiny Grenert of Globe; a
niece, Cathi Goforth Busby of Globe; and nine grandchildren. Her father, Leslie
Goforth, and a brother, Joseph Kimball Goforth, predeceased Mrs. Back. Funeral
services will be held Friday at Curtis-Bright Funeral Home, 210 W. College Ave.,
Silver City, at 2 p.m. William Frazier will officiate. Interment will follow in
the Silver City Masonic Cemetery with full Order of Eastern Star rites.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at Curtis-Bright Funeral Home one hour
prior to service time. The family will gather at the Don Turner residence at No.
11 Mesquite Drive off Rosedale Road after the services. Donations can be made to
the American Cancer Society or a favorite local charity. Arrangements are by

BAKER: Mrs. W. H. Emerick received word of the death of her brother, Jacob
Joseph Baker, February 5 at Long Beach, Calif.He was 71 years old. Following
funeral services, burial took place in Rest Lawn cemetery. Mr. Baker, well known
by his many friends in Silver City, was the first manager of the Penney store
when it was established here. He had resided in Ca1ifornia since retiring from
the J. C. Penney Co.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.. Hazel Baker; two sons, James Jacob Baker, Jr.,
Long Beach and, Donald Baker, of Westminster, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs.
Barbara Hartley, of Palm Desert, Calif; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. P.
C. Presson, Las Cruces, and Mrs. Emerick, Silver City; a brother, Dan L. Baker,
Flomaton, Alabama.
BAKER: Mrs. D.L. (Nora) Baker, 84, died at her home in Deming Sunday, July 16.
The deceased was the mother of Mrs. Elmer Salars of Silver City.
Other survivors of the deceased are four sons, Bill Baker, Tucson; Joe Baker,
Deming; Roy Baker of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Lee Baker, Deming and three daughters
Mrs. Dorothy Russell, Deming: Mrs. Verna Roach, Colton, Calif; Mrs. Betty Turner
Salars of Silver City. There are also 16 grandchildren and 19 great
grandchildren. Survivors in Silver City are a grandson, Tom Turner; a great
grandson, Tracy Thomas Turner, Carol Turner and Mrs. Virginia Moore, the latter
the former Virginia Turner. Services are being held today in Deming at the
Mahoney Funeral Home there. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that
contributions be made to the First Methodist Church in Deming."
BACON: Charles a. Bacon, 89, resident of Grant County for 50 years, died Friday
at the Fairview Rest Home. He was well known as a pioneer of the county and was
a retired employee of Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation. For
many years he was an active member of the Masonic and Elks Lodges. Survivors are
two sons, Horace W. Bacon, Morenci, Ariz., Ross A. Bacon, Hayward, Calif.; a
daughter, Mrs. Roy Peterson, Richmond, Calif., and five grandchildren. Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Curtis Mortuary chapel, with officers
and members of the Hurley Lodge of Masons, conducting the rites. Entombment was
in the mausoleum at the Masonic Cemetery.
BACON: Gertrude E. Bacon, 96, died Sept. 28 in the Fort Bayard Medical Center.
She was born March 12, 1892 in Burnet, Texas, and was the postmistress in
Williamsburg for many years before moving to Fort Bayard. Graveside services
will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Fort Bayard National Cemetery with Donald
Bateman officiating. Survivors are her daughter-in-law, Martha Bateman of Silver
City; six grandchildren, Ronald, Donald and Gene Bateman; Nancy De-Loach, Gloria
Martin and Dorothy Dodd; several great-grandchildren; and special
great-great-grandchildren. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral

BACON: Horace W. (Sonny) Bacon, died May 6 at the University of Arizona Hospital
at Tucson. Sonny was born Dec. 2, 1916 in Hurley, the son of Rebecca (Barnard)
and Charles A. Bacon. Sonny received his grade schooling in Fierro, N.M., went
to High School in Hurley and attended College at New Mexico State Teacher's
College in Silver City from 1937 to 1940. He was Lt. Commander in the Navy from
1940 to 1946 and a fighter pilot on duty in North Africa and the South Pacific.
He was an advanced training instructor at Sanford, Fl. and flying instructor at
Duncan, Ariz. in 1947 and 1948 after he was out of the service. He was employed
at Phelps Dodge at Morenci, Ariz. in 1954 and retired from there in 1980. He
built a home and lived at Gila, N.M. for approximately one year before moving to
Safford, Ariz., where he lived until the time of his death. Sonny was a member
of the Elks Lodge at Clifton, Ariz. and past Exalted Ruler of the Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel (Johns) Bacon of the home; one son, John Bacon
of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Sandra Alcorn of Morenci, and Dorothy McLean of
San Louis Obispo, Calif.; five grandchildren; and one brother, Ross Bacon of
Gila. Services were held at the LDS Church at Safford, Ariz. on Monday, May 10.
BACON: Maxine B. Bacon, 76, of Winston, OR, formerly of the Silver City area
passed away Saturday, March 1, at a Winston care center. She was born Aug. 17,
1920, in Cone, N.M., the daughter of Dave and Rose (Maytum) Ellis. She was a
schoolteacher. She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Ann O’Neal of Winston; a
son, Michael D. O’Neal of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Naida Walls of
Albuquerque and Rosslie McMorris of Hereford, Texas; and one grandson; She was
preceded in death by her husband, Ross, in 1996. Cremation arrangements were
under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel in Winston. No services were
scheduled
BADER: Funeral services for William C. Bader who died Wednesday, July 22, were
held In the Curtis Mortuary Chapel Saturday at 2::30 p.m. with the Rev. Dan
Loomis of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed in Memory Lane
cemetery. Mr. Bader had resided here for the past eight years. He is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Ella Bader of Silver City; stepdaughter, Mrs. Richard Goldsmith
of Silver City; a step-son, Charles York of Potomac, Md.; eight grandchildren.
Casket bearers included Larry Whiting Leon R. Fitzhugh, Howard Silvius, Henry
Bagby, Frank Parrish and Harry 0. Sontag. Family members requested that in lieu
of flowers, contributions be made in the name of the deceased to the First
United Presbyterian Church.
BADER: Ella J. Bader, 83, died Saturday, April 14, in Hillcrest General
Hospital. Mrs. Bader was a native of Canada and had lived in Silver City for the
past 16 years. She served as an Army Nurse during World War I and was a member
of the First Presbyterian Church in Silver City. Her daughter, Mrs. Claire
Goldsmith of Siver City, her son Charles T. York of Bonn, Germany, nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive Mrs. Bader. Funeral services
were held Tuesday, April 17, in the Curtis-Bright Chapel with Reverend James G.
McClelland of the First United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial followed
in Memory Lane Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Dr. Leslie Hamm, Dr. W.J.
Lincoln, Jack Moran, Robert Miller, Dr. Ted Draelos and John Stermer. The family
asks donations in her name be made to the Silver City Public Library or the
First United Presbyterian Church in Silver City.
BADGETT: James R. “Bud” Badgett. 84, a longtime resident of Lordsburg, passed
away Saturday in El Paso, Texas. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at
11a.m. in the Lordsburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Phillips officiating.
The family will receive friends at Lordsburg Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 am
until the service time. Interment will he Friday in Sherman, Texas, in Cedarlawn
Cemetery. Mr. Badgett was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Denison, Texas. He was the son
of Walter H. Badgett and Maggie Blanton. He is survived by his wife of 60 years,
Charlotte Ashburn Badgett; two daughters, Jeaneane Bishop of Capitola, Calif.,
and Patricia Farnsworth and her husband, Richard, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four
grandsons, Bill Bishop of San Jose, Calif., Patrick Bishop of Capitola, and Jeff
Farnsworth and Matthew Farnsworth of Santa Rosa; a brother, Joe Badgett, and his
wife, Earline, of Austin, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Frances Badgett of
College Station, Texas. Mr. Badgett was a graduate of Texas A&M University. He
taught high school several years in Waxahachie, Texas. He served in the U.S.
Army, 3rd Army 204 Engineers Combat Battalion, during World War II as a
lieutenant colonel. Mr. Badgett was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery while on
assignment in Luxembourg overseeing the completion of a Treadway bridge across
the Sauer River. Mr. Badgett was a schoolteacher for the A&M Consolidated School
District in College Station. While living in College Station, he trained
practice teacher~ in industrial education. In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Badgett moved
to Lordsburg and opened Fashion Cleaners and tux rentals, and operated until
retirement in 1992. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and was an active
member of Methodist Church. Lordsburg Funeral Home was selected."
BAER: Eugenia Josephine “Jean” Baer, 91, was horn Aug. 14, 1905, in the Bronx,
N.Y., to William and Sarah Dickson Myers. She died Wednesday. One of seven
children, she married Michael Baer on Oct. 13, 1923, at St. Peter’s Episcopal
Church in the Bronx. Together, they had five children. She was a homemaker and a
full-time mother. She raised her nephew, Raymond Francis, as well as her
children. Mrs. Baer was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. She had been
in residence at Horizon Southwest long-term care center in Silver City Since
1991. Before coming to Silver City, she lived in Appomattox, Va., for 17 years.
Her husband Michael, in 1971 and two sons, William and Richard Powell, preceded
her in death. Her son Lawrence Arthur of Phoenix and her daughter Barbara Baer
survive her.
BAEZA: Visitation for Jose S. Baeza, 86, of Deming will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
today at Baca's Funeral Chapel with the prayer vigil at 7 p.m. at St. Ann's

BAEZA: Visitation for Manuel V. Baeza, 60, of Deming will be 2-5 p.m. today at
Baca's Funeral Chapel. The prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Ann's
Catholic Church. Mass of the resurrection will be at noon Tuesday. Concluding
services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Arrangements are
by Baca's Funeral Chapel. Baeza died Friday at Memorial Medical Center in Las
Cruces. Baeza was born Jan. 22,1939 in Casas Grandas, Chihuahua, Mexico. He
served in the Nation- al Guard for eight years and was a construction worker. He
is survived by his wife, Lupe A. Baeza of Deming; three sons, David Baeza,
Manuel Baeza Jr. and Eddie Baeza, all of Deming; two daughters, Sylvia Baeza and
Amelia Baeza, both of Deming; his mother, Carmen V. Baeza of Deming; three
brothers, Joe Baeza, Luis Baeza and Danny Baeza, all of Deming; two sisters,
Mary B. Quarrel of Deming and Alice B. Lujan of Las Cruces; and six
grandchildren
BAEZA; Maria Chavez Baeza, 80, resident of Shady Acres Trailer Park died Feb. 6
at Providence Hospital in El Paso. She was born Sept. 28, 1903 in San Miguel and
had lived in Deming all of her life. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Catholic
Church. Survivors include three sons, Sebastian Campos of Los Angeles, CA, Rudy
Baeza of Bernalillo, Luis Baeza Jr. of Silver City; six daughters, Mercedes
Campos of Los Angeles, CA, Jessica Alvarez and Alicia Vargas of El Paso, TX,
Adelina Moreno and Virginia Baeza of Deming and Amelia Mendoza of Silver City;
one brother, Willie Chavez of Deming; three sisters, Angelina Saucedo of
Lordsburg, Susie Davalos, of Deming and Amelia Diaz of Los Angeles, CA; 26
grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren. Rosary services were held Feb. 7
at St. Ann's Catholic Church and the funeral Mass was held Feb. 8. Father Mike
Macaya officiated at both services and interment followed at Mountain View
Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Vargas, Paul Vargas, Patrick Vargas, Manuel

BAGBY: Harold Henry; Bagby Jr., 81, entered life eternal Monday, March 1, at the
Silver City Care Center. Known to his family and friends as "Henry," he was born
June 28, 1917, in Huntsville, Mo., to Harold Henry and Grace (Sheare) Bagby. A
lifelong resident op Grant County, he was employed as a senior chemist at
Kennecott Copper Corp. in Hurley for more than 30 years. Throughout this time
and until his death, he operated the family ranch south, of Silver City. He was
a member of the Western New Mexico Cattle Growers Association and the American
Hereford Association. Mr. Bagby was also a lifelong member of the First
Presbyterian Church in Silver City where he was ordained as an elder at the age
of 21. He served as a lay minister for several years. His wife of 23 years,
Patricia Anne; a brother, Edward Hale Bagby of Springfield, Mo.; a sister,
Christine Billings of Silver City; three nephews; two great-nephews; two
great-nieces; two great-greatnephews; and numerous cousins survive him. He was
preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was held Wednesday evening at
Baca's Funeral Chapels. A memorial service was to be held this morning at 10 at
the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Reese officiating. A
reception followed in the church hall. Interment was at Memory Lane Cemetery,
where he was laid to rest. Pallbearers were David Quick, David Brown, Jimmy
McCauley, Jimmy Mitchell, David McCauley, Neil Parrish and J Kevin Carson.

Grace E. Bagby, 98, died Tuesday, April 12 at the Fort Bayard Medical Center.
Mrs. Bagby was born in Weeping Water, Neb. March 21, 1885. As a, young woman she
taught school in Missouri. She was married to Harold Bagby in 1910. They moved
to Silver City in 1912. Since that, time he had resided on the Bagby Ranch,
south of Silver City. Mrs. Bagby was a volunteer worker with the American Red
Cross during the depression and World War II. She also helped needy families and
had been an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church for many
years, In the late 1930s she joined the Whitewater Extension Homemakers Club and
became an honorary lifetime member in 1978, She also took an interest n civic
affairs an often spoke on progress in Silver City. Survivors include two
brothers, John 0, Shearer of 0klahoma and Valentine E. Shearer of Silver City:
two Sons, Henry Bagby Jr. of Silver City and F. Hale Bagby of Springfield, Mo;
one daughter, Christine Billings of Silver City; four grandsons, Hal and Don
Billings of Silver City, James T. Billings of T Or C and Howard Bagby of
Springfield. Mo.: and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Thursday, April 14, in the Wheeler Chapel with Dr. Harry Summers of the First
United Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed at Memory Lane
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Earl Reese, Gene Stailey, David McCauley, Al Marrufo,
Neil Parrish and Jeff Glenn. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Billings, Joe
Welsh, Elmer Salars, Harry Sontag, Jimmy Silva and Sterling Bailey.
BAGGETT: Jack Baggett, 80, of Silver City passed away Monday, Jan. 10, at Gila
Regional Medical Center. Mr. Baggett was born Sept. 11, 1919. He was active at
the senior citizens center and was an avid domino player. He was always very
knowledgeable about world affairs. Visitation will be from 11 in the morning
until 1 in the afternoon Thursday at Baca's Funeral Chapels. Graveside services
will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memory Lane Cemetery. Officiating will be
Chaplain David Strain. While Mr. Baggett outlived all his known next of kin, he
is survived by a special friend and guardian, Connie Ryan, and her husband,
Tommy, of Silver City; a very special friend, Corinda Saenz of Bayard; and a

BAGLEY: Laurel Anne Bagley, 49, a resident of Silver City, entered into eternal
rest Tuesday, Oct. 20, at her home. She was born in Santa Rita on April 22,
1949, to Harry and Edna Alexander. They lived at Aklin Hill, Central and Bayard
before moving to Jackpile Uranium Mine near Grants in 1957.She attended school
at the mine town site and graduated in 1967 from Laguna Acoma High School. She
moved to Albuquerque after high school and was baptized in 1967 as one of
Jehovah’s Witnesses. Shortly thereafter she moved to Silver City to engage in
the full-time ministry. She worked part time at the hospital and on June 26,
1971, married R. Eddie Bagley. In the next few years they moved several times,
twice to Alaska, returning home in 1986 to resume work at Tyrone. Mrs. Bagley
enjoyed camping in the mountains, growing flowers and taking to people about the
Bible. Her favorite saying was, “We made a memory”. She loved to go to garage
sales and flea markets and loved to be with friends and family. Her husband and
her family and friends will dearly miss her, but she looked forward to the time
of the fulfillment of the Scripture in John 5:28-30 about all those in the
memorial tombs will hear Jesus’ voice and come out to a resurrection of life
here on the Earth in a paradise condition to be able to live forever. A memorial
service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s

BAGLEY: Alice Day Bagley, died recently in Silver City. She was born July 30,
1909 in El Paso, TX. She was married to William M. Bagley in 1926 in Corona, NM
and the family resided there until 1954. She is survived by her sister, Edna
Duplentis of Albuquerque and her children, Anelle Rury of Gig Harbor,
Washington, Patricia Louise Bassett of Westminster, Co. William A. Bagley of
Silver City, John Marshall Bagley, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Robert E. Bagley of
Silver City, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents Alonzo James and Amelia Sultemeier Atkinson and her husband
William M. Bagley in 1977, and her youngest son, Kenneth G. Bagley in 1973. She
had lived in Silver City for the past 14 years. A memorial talk was given at the
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Additional services and burial was in
Corona, NM. Pallbearers were Melvin Sultemeier, Clint Sultemeier, Byron Yancey,
Myron Yancey and John E. Tracey. Honorary pallbearers were Ernest Sultemeier,
Frank Sultemeier, Lonzie Sultemeier, Harold Sultemeier, William H. Sultemeier,
Richard Sultemeier, Mark Sloan and Arthur Finley. Wheeler Funeral Home and
Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, NM handled funeral services locally. The

BAGNALL: Mrs. Helen Bagnall, mother of Mrs. Alvin E. Franks, passed away
Saturday in a Denver Hospital, where she had been a patient for some weeks.
Following word of her death, Mr. and Mrs. Franks flew to Denver in their private
plane to attend funeral services, which were held Tuesday. Burial took place in
Clorinda, Iowa. Mrs. Bagnall was a frequent visitor in recent years to Silver
City where she had many friends. Besides her daughter here, she is survived by a
stepson Richard Bagnall, of California, three grandchildren and a brother,
Arthur Hudson of New Delhi, India. She was the mother-in-law of Mrs. Beverly
Bagnall of Silver City.
BAGNALL: Beverly S. Bagnall, 75, a former Silver City resident, died May 14, in
Lathrop, Calif. Mrs. Bagnall was born in Minnesota, but had lived in Lathrop for
25 years. She retired as a bookkeeper with Occidental Chemical Co. Survivors
include her husband, Richard Bagnall of Lathrop; a daughter, Sue A. Forshee and
her husband, Myron, of Silver City; two sisters, Bonnie Livran and Bette Reid,
both of Denver; a sister-in-law, Mary Franks, and her husband, Al Franks, of
Silver City; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday at
3 p.m. at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American

BAGWELL: Maude M. Bagwell of Silver City passed away Tuesday, June 16 in her
residence. She was born November 1, 1897 in Pinos Altos, the daughter of James
and Lilly Moore Mattocks and had lived in Silver City most of her life. She was
employed as a clerk for the Silver Office Supply for many years. She was a life
member and Past Matron of the Georgetown Chapter #4 Order of Eastern Star,
Silver City Women's Club, a very active member of several organizations of the
First Baptist Church, especially the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She is
survived by one daughter Mrs. Richard Ferne Nolan of Silver City; one son, Rush
A. Bagwell of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one brother, George F. Mattocks of
Silver City; three grandsons; one great-grandson. Her husband Rush A. Bagwell
preceded her in death in 1965. Services were held Friday, June 19 at 2 p.m. in
the Curtis Bright Chapel under the direction of Rev. Donald Wiley of the First
Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Masonic Cemetery, Silver City. Serving as
pallbearers were: Leroy Smith, Jap Housley, Howard Silvius, Charles Thurber, Bob
Humphrey, and Meredith Neal. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute

BAGWELL: Rush A. Bagwell, 75, of Silver City, died early Monday at hillcrest
General Hospital. He had been an area resident here for the past 52 years. One
of the four oldest living members of Santa Rita Lodge No. 44, AF&AM, and Mr.
Bagwell was initiated into the Masonic Lodge in 1918. He was master of the lodge
in 1922. He had worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division
where he was shop foreman, retiring in 1955 after 42 years of service with the
company. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maude Bagwell of Silver City; daughter,
Mrs. Richard Nolan of Silver City; son, Rush A. Bagwell of Denver; four
grandsons and four sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at
the Curtis Mortuary chapel, the Rev. Claude Williams, pastor of the First
Baptist Church conducting the rites. Ritualistic services were also held by the
Santa Rita Lodge of Masons Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.
BAILEY: George Bailey, 87, a resident of Fort Bayard, entered eternal rest

BAILEY: Rocky Lee Bailey, 27, died Wednesday, Nov. 20 in Silver City. Mr. Bailey
was born in Santa Rita and was a lifelong resident of Grant County. He is
survived by his mother, Jill Fortenberry and his father, Johnny P. Wilson, two
sisters, Debra Hill of Plainsview, Texas, DeeDee Massingill of Silver City, a
brother, John Bailey of Silver City, and several aunts and uncles. Funeral
services were Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Curtis-Bright Chapel with
Reverend C.M. Henderson officiating. Burial followed in Memory Lane Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Rusty Pruitt, Don Colcleasure, Bruce Burg, Charley
Burg, Pete Silman and James Arellin. Honorary pallbearers were, Floyd Marriage,
Tony Pruitt and Mark Ball.
BAIRD: William W. Baird passed away Oct. 6 in Tucson, AZ. He was born Feb. 21.
1892 at El Paso, Texas. Survivors include his wife, two sisters, two sons, two
daughters, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He came to New Mexico
in 1939. In the early 1940’s he was foreman for the CCC Camp at Apache Creek. He
drove the Aragon school bus to Reserve for 10 years. Services were conducted by
Rev. Larry L. Rhodes at Adair Funeral Home Oct. 7. Interment was at the Tucson
Memorial Park in Tucson.

BAKER: Glenn Clark Baker Sr., 70, died Sunday in a hospital in Little Rock, Ark.
He was born at Paw Creek, N.C. He was a retired serviceman having served as a
gunsmith for the U S Army. He also served on the international shooting team.
After he retired, he worked as a gunsmith in Silver City. He was a Presbyterian.
Survivors are his wife, Vivian H. Baker of Malvern, Ark.; three sons, Glenn
Baker Jr. of Pine Bluff, Ark., John T. Baker of Silver City and Bruce Baker of
Hot Springs Ark. One daughter, Lucille B Turner of Silver city; and five
grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the Heart Fund.
BAKER: Dr. Sidney F Baker 45, former Silver City physician, died last Saturday
in Las Vegas, where he had been a member of the medical staff of the New Mexico
State Hospital for several years. He was associated with the Watts Clinic and
thereafter had an office in Silver City and also practiced in Lordsburg, a
member of the Grant County Medical Society and, the New Mexico Medical
Association.
During World War II, Dr Baker served in the U. S. Navy. At the end of the War he
came to Fort Bayard Veterans Administration, served on the medical staff, before
becoming a resident of Silver City. Surviving is a daughter, Nancy Odessa, Tex.,
and a son, “Skipper.” Funeral service and burial took place in Tyler Texas.
BAKER: Jack Baker, 68, resident of Reserve, died last Friday at the Fort Bayard
Veterans Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at Reserve where burial
took place under direction of the Curtis Mortuary. Survivors are the wife of the
deceased, Mrs. Ida Baker, of Reserve; five sons, Fred of Maryland, Bill, Jake
and Roy of Los Angeles, Calif; and James of McAllester, Okla.; four daughters,
Mrs. Ruth Chambers of Los Angeles, Mrs. Oma Higgins of Reserve, Mrs. Helen Zike
of Chandler, Ariz., and Mrs. Dorothy Bible of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 33
grandchildren.
BAKER: Polly Baker, 86, of Deming passed away Sunday, April 16, at Willow Manor
in Deming. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First
Presbyterian Church in Deming. Following the service, her friends and loved ones
are asked to gather at the Rio Mimbres Country Club for reminiscing and

BAKER: Bennie Vivian Rankin Baker, 79, of Malvern, Ark., died Saturday, Jan. 28,
at Hot Spring County Memorial Hospital. She was born March 18, 1915, in Lowell,
N.C., to Thomas Pinkey Rankin and Vivian Pearl Rankin. She was a homemaker and
of the Methodist faith. Her husband, Glenn Baker, preceded her in death. She is
survived by her three sons, Glenn Baker Jr. of Malvern, John Thomas Baker of
Silver City and Bruce Ed Baker of Morristown, Tenn.; one daughter, Vivian
Lucille Turner of Silver City; two brothers, Charles Rankin of Kenner, La., and
Eugene Rankin of Greenwich, Conn.; and several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
BAKER: Helen Mayes Baker, 74, a former Grant County resident, died Tuesday at
Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. She was a resident of Thatcher, Ariz. She
was born April 12, 1916, in Santa Rita to Stone J. and Julia Mayes. A homemaker,
Mrs. Baker served at one time as worthy matron of the Morenci, Ariz. Eastern
Star chapter. Her husband, Jess L. Baker, preceded her in death on Nov. 26,
1990. The couple was married July 2, 1935, in Santa Rita. Survivors include a
daughter, Mary Ann Cox of Albuquerque; a son, Johnny L. Baker of Tucson; five
grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Smith of Tucson, and Ruth M. Mitchell of
Bayard; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday morning
at 10 in the Thatcher Baptist Church. She will be buried beside her husband in
the Safford Cemetery.
BAKER: Mrs. Ida Kimmicky Baker, mother of David Baker of Silver city, died the
second week of July. Mrs. Baker was born at Schwartz, NM in 1892. Survivors
include a daughter, Mary Helen Moody of Fair Oaks, Calif; three sons, Harry,
Jr., of Lincoln, Calif., David of Silver City, and Harvey of Fair Oaks, Calif.;
14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Services were held in Roseville,
Calif. July 12.
Baker: Terry Dale Baker, 33, a former Grant County resident, passed away Monday
in Lewisville, Texas. He was born July 26, 1961 in Carlsbad to Darwin Baker and
Bonnie Smith Hess. He began his schooling in Loving and graduated from Silver
High School. He also attended Western New Mexico University in Silver City. He
became interested in working as a radio disc jockey when he was 11 years old and
went on to work for country music radio stations in New Mexico and Texas. While
in high school and college, he worked for the Grant County Sheriff's Department.
Mr. Baker later joined the family businesses, Baker Bonding Co. and Baker Mobile
Homes. While living in the Midland-Odessa area in Texas, he worked as an
automobile sales credit manager and was a disc jockey. While in that area, he
met and married Candie Tolliver and the couple later moved to Dallas, where he
worked as a credit manager for an automobile dealership. Survivors include his
wife, Candie Tolliver Baker of Lewisville; two sons, Justin Dale Baker of Silver
City and Corey Dale Baker of Lewisville; his parents Darwin Baker of Las Cruces
and Bonnie and Ed Hess of Richland, Wash.; his sister Lisa Dawn Perea and her
husband, Pat, of Tijeras; his grandmothers, Louise Smith of Carlsbad and
Jeannette Hess of St.Louis; his aunts, Camille Shoemaker of Carlsbad and Reba
Smith of Gilmer, Texas; his uncles, Vernon Shoemaker of Carlsbad, Norman Smith
of Albuquerque, John L. Smith of Gilmer and Norman Baker of Lordsburg; and his
great-aunts, Rose Barnett of Carlsbad and Jerri Smith of Albuquerque. His
grandparents, John Smith in 1992, Elmer Baker in 1976 and Margaret Nymeyer Baker
in 1990, preceded him in death. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the
West Funeral Home chapel in Carlsbad. The Rev. Joe Keith Pierce of the Loving
Assembly of God Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.

BALCH: William W. Balch, 87, a former resident of Hurley, died July 14 at
Albuquerque, where he had resided in recent years, He is survived by his wife,
two sons, Earl and Lloyd and a daughter, Mrs. Bemnetta Stephens, all of
Albuquerque.
BALDONADO: Augustin H. Baldonado, 53, a brother of Mrs. Vicente Triviso of
Silver City, died the past week in the Veterans hospital in Portland, Oregon He
was a resident of Santa Rita and a veteran of World War II.
BALDONADO: Mrs. Veronica Baldonado, 49, Santa Rita died last Thursday. Rosary
services were held Friday evening at the Cox Mortuary chapel, followed by mass 4
pm Saturday morning at the Santa Rita Catholic Church. Burial took place in the
Hanover cemetery. Surviving is her husband, Mariano R. Baldonado; mother,
Refugio Gonzales; sisters Antonita Herrera, El Paso, and a brother, Jose
Gonzales, Riverside, Calif.

Grant County, having been born at Sherman, died Sunday at Hillcrest General

with mass at 10 am Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard with
the Rev. Fr. Frank Sierra officiating. Burial was in the Silver City Cemetery.
BALDRIDGE: Mrs. Rex (Emma) Baldridge, 59, died last Wednesday in Inspiration
Mining Company hospital at Miami, Ariz. For the past two years she and her
husband, Rex Baldridge, had resided at Christmas, Arizona, removing there from
Grants. The deceased, the former Emma Hase, came from Mexico to Tyrone in 1917
with her family, the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hase. For many years, Mrs.
Baldridge was employed in the offices of E. Cosgrove, Inc., in Silver City. She
was a member of Faith Chapel No. 69, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a
charter member of the"24" Club in Silver City, retaining honorary membership in
the club upon leaving here in 1953 with her husband, Rex Baldridge, and son,
Gary, to go to Grants. The past two years, the Baldridges have resided at the
Christmas Mines in Arizona. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Katherine McLemore
of Porterville, Calif., and a brother, Ernest E. Hase of Helena, Mont. Funeral
services were held Saturday in the chapel of the Curtis Mortuary, with burial

BALDWIN: Sam T. Baldwin, 80, father of Mrs. N. L. Haggerson of Hurley, died
Monday in Chattanooga. Tenn., according to word received from the daughter who
left for Tennessee a week ago. During a three-year period, 1955-58, Mr. Baldwin
lived at the Haggerson home. Besides the daughter the deceased is survived by
three sons, Sam, John and Robert all of Chattanooga. Funeral services were held
Tuesday in Mulberry, Tenn., where burial took place.
BALDWIN: George S. Baldwin, a prominent New Mexico journalist and former Silver
City resident, died Thursday, Feb. 27, in Albuquerque after a long illness. He
was 88. His wife of 63 years, Ruth Posner Baldwin, who survives, is also from
Silver City. Baldwin came to Silver City in the early l930s, joining the Silver
City Enterprise, where he served as reporter and editor, among other duties. He
actively supported Western New Mexico University, then the New Mexico State
Teachers College, and high schools in the area. Baldwin was an avid sports fan.
He joined the Albuquerque Tribune in Albuquerque in 1934, holding titles over
the years as city editor, managing editor and associate editor. After officially
retiring in 1980, he continued his widely read column, “By George,” during a
20-year span. He received numerous awards and commendations. Baldwin was a
member of the Masonic Temple Lodge in Silver City and Silver American Legion
Post 13.Memorial services were held in Albuquerque, as were graveside services
with Rabbi Joseph Black officiating.
BALDWIN: Houston C. Baldwin, 59, a resident of Pinos Altos, entered life eternal
Tuesday. He was a retired pipe welder. He was a veteran of the United States
Marine Corps, serving with the Marines during the Korean War. Mr. Baldwin was a
member of the Baptist Church. Services will be held in Houston. Burial will be
at Houston National Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with fellow
veterans. Survivors include his three sons, Houston Baldwin Jr. of Houston, and
Roy Lee Baldwin, and David Earl Baldwin, both of Pasadena, Texas; two daughters,
Darlene E. Wilkens of Houston and Bonnie L. Baldwin of Pasadena; three sisters,
Ruth Armstrong of Banks, Ark., Anna Overall of New Caney, Texas, and Bessie
Baldwin of Houston, and three grandchildren. A daughter, Carolyn R. Baldwin,

Baldwin: Mrs. Guida M. Baldwin, 53, a former resident of Bayard, where she
operated Polly Cafe passed away last Friday in a Forth Worth Tex. hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Cox Mortuary chapel, the
Rev. Lee Sullivan of the Santa Rita Baptist Church, conducting the rites. Burial
took place in the Silver City cemetery. Surviving are her husband, Harry
Baldwin, Forth Worth; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Hilton, Santa Rita, and a brother,
Erwin S. Walker, Del Mar, Calif.
BALDWIN: Todd Matthew Baldwin, 23, a Silver City resident, entered into rest
Friday. He was born April 15, 1971, in Phoenix to Owen and Helen Williams
Baldwin. He was an avid drummer and played with the area Scottish Drum and
Bagpipe Group. He also assisted in Western New Mexico University's production of
the "Wizard of Oz." He is survived by his father, Owen William Baldwin of
Taylor, Ariz.; his mother, Helen Elizabeth Baldwin of Silver City; his brother,
Gary William Baldwin of Taylor; and his sisters, Lorna Jean Sillentine and her
husband, Keith, of Quemado, and Elizabeth Nicole McClain and her husband, Mark,
of Chaparral. The funeral service will begin at 10 Tuesday morning at Baca's
Funeral Chapels with Bill Harrison officiating. Concluding services and burial
will follow at 3 p.m. in Quemado on the Williams family ranch. Serving as casket
bearers are Mark, Jimbo, Matt and Jim Williams, Steve Jensen and Johannes
HeyneKamp. Honorary bearers are Reuben Jensen, Mike Johnson, Jim Rogers, Bob

BALEE: Amelia "Amy" Balee, 91, passed away July 2. She was born Sept. 29, 1900.
Her son, William “Bill” Balee of Wichita, Kan., his wife, Grace, and seven
grandchildren survive Mrs. Balee. Mrs. Balee was a Silver City resident for 35
years. Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in
Silver City on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 3 p.m. the Rev. Robert “Bob” Bellows will
conduct Services. She was laid to rest in Guthrie, Ky., alongside her loving
husband, John Peter "Pete" Balee.
BALIM: Word was received in Silver City the past week of the death on May 23, in
Klamath Falls, Oregon, of Mrs. Ethel Balim, a former resident of Pinos Altos.
Survivors are her husband, Dean Balim, and a son Harold, of Klamath Falls and a
sister, Mrs. Stella Bagley of Oroville, Calif. Funeral services and burial took
place at Klamath Falls. Mrs. Balim was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Young of
Pino Altos, where she was born.
BALKE: Babetta E. "Bobbie" Balke, 86, of Silver City passed away Friday, March
5, at Gila Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6-8
p.m. Tuesday at Bright Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10
a.m. Wednesday, also at Bright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Weldon Coker
officiating. Cremation will take place under the direction of Bright Funeral
Home and interment will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memory Lane Cemetery. Mrs. Balke
was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Gila, the daughter of Charles G. Horn and Mable Lee
Horn. She married Arthur H. Balke on Jan. 30, 1937. Mr. Balke preceded her in
death. She is survived by her mother, Mable Horn of Silver City; two sons, Fred
Balke and his wife, Lois, of Santa Clara and Dennis Balke of Silver City; a
sister, Estelle Smith of Temple, Texas; an aunt, Edith Jenkins of Parker, Ariz.;
nine grandchildren, Kimberly Oizumi and her husband, Steve, of Silver City,
Karen Burnette and her husband, Jerry, of Hurley, Katherine Balke of Santa
Clara, Candy Leonard and her husband, Dusty, and Casey Balke Salars, all of
Silver City, Cody Balke of Colorado Springs, Colo, Bobbie Jean Layton, and Anna
Leigh Conners and her husband, Steven, all of Safford, Ariz., and Tonja Porter
and her husband, Jack, of Los Angeles; along with numerous other relatives. Mr.
and Mrs. Balke lived most of their married lives on the Balke ranch near
Glenwood. The Balkes retired and moved to Silver City in 1973. Mrs. Balke spent
the last few years of her life caring for her mother. Mrs. Balke was a member of

BALKE: Fred P. Balke, 70, pioneer rancher, died early Tuesday morning at his
ranch home on the Frisco River in Catron County. Born at Chloride, N. M., he was
a life-long resident of Southwest New Mexico where he was a prominent and
successful in the livestock industry with extensive ranch holdings. For many
years he was active as a member of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Balke; two sons, Arthur Balke, Glenwood,
and Max Balke, Morro Bay, Calif.; two daughters, Miss Fredina Balke, Silver
City, and Mrs. Evelyn Hurd, Madrid, Spain; three brothers, Frank Balke, Reserve;
Hugh Balke, Morenci, Ariz., and Robert Balke, Clifton, Ariz., and four sisters,
Mrs. May McKeen, Glenwood; Mrs. Ernestine Flaherty, Phoenix; Mrs. Laura Gray,
Clifton and Mrs. Pearl Hale, Prescott, Ariz. Also surviving are six
grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
today in the First Presbyterian Church at Glenwood, the Rev. Richard Anderson of
Reserve, officiating. Burial will take place in the Alma cemetery under the
direction of the Cox Mortuary.
BALKE: Fredina C. Balke, 77, a Silver City resident, died Thursday at Gila
Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was born May 13, 1913, at
Alma. She held bachelors and Masters degrees in education from New Mexico
Western College. She was a public elementary school teacher for 46 years. She
taught two years in Alma, two years in Santa Rita, and 42 years in Silver City.
She retired from teaching in May 1977. After retiring, she traveled extensively,
but continued to reside in Silver City. She was preceded in death by her mother,
Gertrude Balke, her father, Fred Balke, and her brother, Arthur Balke. A sister,
Evelyn Hurd of Silver City; a brother, Max Balke of California; a sister-in-law,
Bobbie Balke of Silver City; and cousins Eva Faust and John McKeen of Alma, and
Francis Wheeler of El Paso, Texas survive her. Numerous nieces and nephews also
survive her. Services will be held at the Curtis-Bright Chapel with the Rev. Ken
Schultz officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery. Pallbearers
will be Fred Balke, Dennis Balke, John Faust, Joseph Faust, John McKeen and John
Wheeler. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to the Valley Community

BALKE: Mrs. Gertrude H. Balke, 63, widow of the late Fred P. Balke, who died in
July 1958, passed away Monday in Silver City. She was a member of the pioneer
Balke ranch family of Alma, Catron County, where she had resided for 55 years.
Eighteen months ago Mrs. Balke came to Silver City to make her home with her
daughter, Miss Fredina Balke. Surviving, besides the daughter here, is another
daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Hurd, Madrid, Spain; two sons, Arthur, Glenwood and Max A.
Balke, Morro Bay, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a
sister, Mrs. Grace Trainor, Farmington, NM; and a brother, Irvin Hicks, Clifton,
Ariz. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Glenwood at
2:30 p.m., the Rev. H.L. Amen, pastor, conducting the rites. Burial will take
place in the Balke family burial plot in the Alma cemetery under direction of
the Cox Mortuary. Flying home from Spain, Mrs. Hurd arrived Tuesday to attend
the final rites for her mother.
BALKE: Ida B. Balke, 96, a resident of Hacienda de Salud, entered life eternal
Tuesday. She was a ranch wife for 65 years in Reserve prior to moving to
Hacienda de Salud. She was born in Alma to the late George and Ella (Day)

BALL: Funera1 services for Eugene Ball, 20-year resident of Hurley who died
Monday, March 12,, were held Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Cox Mortuary Chapel.
Rev. Lewis J. Presnall, pastor of the Hurley Union Church, officiated. Burial
was in the Silver City cemetery. The deceased was born in Skidmore, Tex., Nov.
20, 1900. He came to New Mexico as a young man and was a blacksmith by trade,
being employed in that capacity by the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott for
several years. During the last few years he had been transferred to serve as
village watchman because of failing health. The passing of Mr. Ball was a great
shock in the community where he had lived so long and was so well known. With an
extremely likeable and friendly personality he was respected and well liked by

BALL: George N. Ball, 87, a pioneer: resident of Deming and World War I veteran,
passed away last Friday at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Fort Bayard.

HALL: Henry B. Hall, 69, a resident of Silver City for 31 years, died last
Saturday at his home after an extended illness. He was an accountant and had
worked for Murray Bros. store at Central some years ago, for Peck Motor Co.,
Monterey Hotel and Daily Press.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Hall; three brothers, W. 0. Hall of Hatch and
Ed and Jim Hall of Colton, Calif.; and one sister, Mrs. Alice James of Deming.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Curtis Mortuary chapel, Rev. C. M.
Henderson of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, conducting the rites.
Burial was In the Silver City cemetery.
BALL: Beulah Anna Ball, 74, a longtime resident of Silver City, died Monday
afternoon at Gila Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Ball was born on May 1915 in
Clayton and had been a resident of Silver City since 1946. She was a member of
the 24 Club and Woman's Club. She was a Brownie Scout leader, a member of the
Order of Eastern Star, and served on the advisory board for the Order of Rainbow
for Girls for many years. Mrs. Ball was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Silver City. She taught Sunday school for 37 years. She also taught vacation
Bible school and was in charge of flowers and decorations for the church. Her
hobbies were gardening and flowers. Calling hours will be from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
today in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels, where the funeral service will be
held Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Concluding services will follow in the Silver
City Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. Jesse Liles, pastor of the Silver City First
Baptist Church, officiating. Survivors are her daughter, Bonni Jo Rogers and her
husband, Bill, of Silver City; a brother, Sam Davis of Albuquerque; a sister,
Mary Mosley of Arrey; and two grandchildren, Lori Anne Stephens and her husband,
Rodney of Albuquerque and Keith Rogers, a student at New Mexico State
University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ball on Aug. 12,

BALL: Daniel T. Ball, 46, died Monday, June 2 in the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Albuquerque. Mr. Ball was born in Santa Rita and had been a life
long resident of Grant County. He was a retired engineer for the Santa Fe
Railroad and a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 413. Mr. Ball is survived by his
mother, Louisa Ball of Hurley, a brother, Bob Ball of Silver City, a nephew,
Marcum Ball of Bloomington, Minnesota, two nieces, Susan Witterman of Globe,
Arizona, and Kelly Ball of Silver City and an aunt, Beulah Simpson of Silver
City. Graveside services were held Wednesday afternoon at Ft. Bayard National
Cemetery with the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 413 and the American Legion Post No. 18
officiating. Serving as pallbearers were the members of the Elks Lodge.

BALL: Rowland Carl Ball, 84, a Silver City resident, entered life eternal
Wednesday at his home. He was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Ooltewah, Tenn., to Asa and
Lucy Ball. Mr. Ball went to Deming in 1924 and drove a bus for Parish Stage
Lines. He was a fire chief in Silver City, and street and water superintendent.
He was also employed by the U.S. Forest Service, and was a manager of Silver
Freight Line. Mr. Ball also managed G.O. Gwyns, served as councilor for the town
of Silver City, and was retired from Phelps Dodge. Calling Hours will be from
5-7 this evening in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels, where the funeral service
will be held Saturday morning at 10. The Rev. David Goble and Deacon Bill
Holguin will officiate. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery, where he
will be laid to rest. Survivors include his wife of 61 years and one day, Bess
"Violet" Ball of the home; two daughters, Dona Irwin and her husband, Bert, and
Bobbie Neal and her husband, Meredith; Ada Robinson and her daughter, Debbie
Pinezza; his grandchildren, Janet Irwin Smyer, Craig Irwin, Kim Neal Allen and

BALL: Stella A. Ball, a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, passed away
Thursday. Mrs. Ball is survived by her husband, Steve M. Ball; four daughters,
Norma Taylor, Elizabeth Van Sickler and her husband, John, Rennie Linkous and
Mary Casias, all of Albuquerque; five sisters; and six grandchildren, Scott
Taylor, Mitzi Winkle, Steve Hindi, Michael Sanchez, Tamara Casias and Andrew
Casias. Mr. Ball was a member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. A
rosary was recited Sunday evening at six in the chapel of Fitzgerald and Son
Funeral Directors in Albuquerque. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday
morning at 9:30 in St. Therese Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Stoeber as
celebrant. Interment followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Steve Hindi,
Michael Sanchez, Andrew Casias, Scott Taylor, Ron Winkle, Richard Marquez, John
Van Sickler and Pat Ulibarri serving as casket bearers.
BALLARD: Margaret Elizabeth Ballard, 67, of Silver City, died Tuesday. Mrs.
Ballard was born Sept. 28, 1920, to Elda and J.J. Mullane in Ackley, Iowa. She
graduated from Ackley High School; attended Iowa State Teachers College; and
graduated from Hamilton's Business College in Mason City, Iowa. She was Ackley
High School's first drum major and also served as president and vice president
of many school activities throughout her schooling. She was a Welcome Wagon
Hostess in Ackley. On Sept. 23, 1944, she married William F. Ballard, and in
1973 they moved to Silver City. She held offices in the Newcomers Club and the
Silver City Woman's Club. She was a friend to all people, and in case of illness
or other adversities she was always one of the first at the door to offer
whatever assistance she could. Next to her family, her great love was the game
of bridge and she was very good at it. She taught more than 100 people how to
play the game or how to improve their game if they already played. This brought
much enjoyment and made their lives more enjoyable. She always was doing
something with or for children of all ages. From making crafts together or
playing fun games or even staging a full-fledged circus in Ackley she loved
youth so much. She is survived by her husband, Bill Ballard of Silver City; one
daughter, Sandra A. Donovan of Wylie, Texas; one son, Bruce J. Ballard of
Longmont, Colo.; one sister, Muriel Van Sant of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and six
grandchildren, Bradley J. Ballard, Ross H. Ballard, Lauren E. Ballard, Brian S.
Donovan, Michael A. Donovan and Pamela E. Donovan. Memorial services will be
held Friday at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James
Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions should be made to St.

BALLEW: Silver City friends have received word of the death Nov. 1 at her home
in Gridley, Calif., of Miss Zula Ballew, a former dean of women at New Mexico
State Teachers College, now Western University. Miss Ballew came to Silver City
in the fall of 1927 to join the faculty of the college and served on the staff
until December 1933, when she resigned to attend Stanford University at Palo
Alto, Calif. She was a graduate of Columbia University, New York City, where she
received her B. S. and M. A. degrees and served on the dean’s staff while
attending graduate school. Following her retirement as a teacher, Miss Ballew
continued her residence In California. Her girlhood home was in Emory, Texas,
where burial took place.
BALLMER: Gerald J. Ballmer, 62, retired mine superintendent at Santa Rita of
Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, died Wednesday in the U.S.
Naval Hospital at San Diego, Calif. Following a heart attack in January 1959,
Mr. Ballmer's health failed and in July of last year, he was retired, after a
long period of outstanding service as a Kennecott official,. He was a veteran of
World War I, serving in the U.S. Army. After his retirement, Mr. Ballmer, with
Mrs. Ballmer, moved to California to make their home in the hope that a lower
altitude would prove beneficial to his health. Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Marta Ballmer; a daughter, Mrs. C.V.Coffey, Ray, Arizona; three sons, Ward
Ballmer, Salt Lake City, Utah; Dale Ballmer, Santa Rita and Ray Ballmer, a
student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston; his mother, residing
in Oak Harbor, Ohio; and a brother in Denver. News of the death of Mr. Ballmer
was received by the Rev. Harold E. Johnson, pastor of the Santa Rita Community
Church, in a long distance telephone call from Mrs. Ballmer. Funeral
arrangements are pending in San Diego.
BALLMER: Services for Ward Evan Ballmer, 69, former public relations director of
Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Chino Mines division, will be conducted at 3 p.m.
Saturday in the Valley Community Church at Arenas Valley. After the services,
his ashes will be scattered over the family's land on Oso Ridge in the Zuni
Mountains. He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Socorro, and went to Santa Rita at the
age of 2, when his father, Gerald J. Ballmer, was a geologist in the mines. His
mother, Martha Williamson Ballmer, was an organist and former schoolteacher. He
finished Hurley High School in 1939, and graduated from New Mexico State
Teachers College four years later with a bachelor of arts degree in English and
journalism. From February 1943 until December 1945, he served in the U.S. Army
Air Corps, Central Pacific Theater, as a radioman. Finding news jobs scarce when
he returned to New Mexico after the war, he worked for two years as a carpenter
in Roswell. But in 1948 he went to Chino as public relations director and
established that department. He was there until 1954, when Chino transferred him
to the New York office, where he headed the research and coordination of public
relations program for operating divisions and subsidiaries. In 1959, he went to
Salt Lake City, as director of public relations of Kennecott's Utah Copper
Division. There he directed a staff of five and prepared and administered annual
public relations budgets of $750,000. In December of 1960, he left Kennecott to
set up his own public relations firm in Grants. His principal clients included
the Uranium Operator's Association, the city of Grants, and the New Mexico Press
Association, with which he served as executive secretary and produced Shop Talk
magazine. He also wrote a weekly column for the Grants Daily Beacon on
interesting people in the area. The column was titled "Know Your Neighbor."
Rejoining Chino in February 1980 as director of public relations, he continued
in that position until his retirement in 1985. Over the years, Mr. Ballmer was
president of the New Mexico Public Relations Society of America. He served six
years on the National Judicial Panel for the Society, and was publicity director
of the New Mexico Section, American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and
Petroleum Engineers. He was president of the Grants, West Valencia Chamber of
Commerce, and president of the Grants Rotary, with which he received Rotary
International's highest honor when he was made a Paul Harris Fellow. He was
active as a Silver City Rotarian. Survivors include his wife, Jonette Henson
Ballmer; a daughter, Marta Jo Russell of Dallas, her husband, Edison T. Russell,
and their children, Matthew, Shelly and Michael; a son, Christopher, of Largo,
Fla., his wife, Leanne, and their children, Daniel and Heather; his brothers,
Dale Ballmer of Silver City, and Ray Ballmer of Tucson, Ariz.; his sister, Ruth
Ellen Coffey of Kearney, Ariz.: an aunt, Josephine Freytag of Oak Harbor, Ohio;
and four sisters-in-law, Col. Lenore Henson, Estelle Goodrich and Laverne Rison,
all of Albuquerque, and Patsy Ruth Underwood of Fort Worth, Texas.
BALLMER: Dale G. Ballmer, 68, a Silver City resident, passed away Saturday at
Fort Bayard Medical Center. He was born in San Rita on Nov. 10, 1927, the son of
Gerald and Martha Ballmer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-48 Mr. Ballmer
retired from Kennecott Copper Corp. a shift foreman. He was is interested in
music and the arts, and was a member of the Grant County Community Counsel, a
member of the Episcopal Church choir, member of Toastmasters and Junior JC’s,
and was a contributor to and supporter of the Western New Mexico University
Museum, to which be donated several Indian artifacts. He is survived by his
wife, Marguerite Ballmer of Silver City; a son, Paul J Ballmer of Tucson,
Michigan, stepson, Bruce W. Brice of Texarkana, Texas; two daughters, Virginia
Beach of Albuquerque, and Katbi O'Mary and her husband, John, of Enterprise,
Ala.; two stepdaughters, Wendy Mahill and her husband, Joel, of Bakersfield,
Calif., and D'Lois Mull and her husband, Chris, of Selingsgrove, Pa.; his
brother, Ray W. Ballmer, and his wife, Doris, of Tucson; his sister Ruth E.
Coffey, and her husband, Red, of Kearney Ariz.; a sister-in-law Joneue Ballmer
of Silver City; and 10 grandchildren. His parents and his brother, Ward E.
Ballmer, preceded him in death. Calling hours will start at 5 this afternoon at
Baca's Funeral Chapels. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m.,
also at Baca's. Burial with military honors will follow at Fort Bayard National
Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers will be Chris Mull, Bruce Brice, John
O'Mary, Robin Coffey, George Sins, Adam Beach and Eric Beach. Entrusted to the

BALTAZAR: Grant County had its sixth highway fatality of the year early last
Sunday morning on State Highway 90 at the Georgetown cut-off east of Santa Rita.
In the two-car crash, Ignacio Baltazar, 56, of Santa Rita, died at the scene of
a broken neck. The victim was driver of one of the cars and the other car driver
was John Edward Arguello 23, of Faywood, who suffered minor injuries, Also
injured was a passenger, Francisco Carrillo, Santa Rita, riding in the Rosales
car, and another passenger, Albert Lopez, in the Arguello car.
BALTEZORE: Mary Evelyn Baltezore, 82, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, at
Navapache Regional Medical Center in Snow Low, Ariz. She was horn Feb. 16, 1915,
in Shreveport, La. She was raised and attended school in Pecos, Texas, and
Burley. She raised her family in El Cajon, Calif. She and her late husband, Sam
Baltezore, an electrical engineer, for several years lived in South America,
where he helped to establish hydroelectric power plants. She was a member of the
Blue Ridge Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral
services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pinetop/Lakeside Stake Center
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Owens Mortuary of Show Low
handled arrangements.
BALTOSSER: Will Willcox Baltosser, 85, of Silver City passed away Monday, Jan.
3, at his home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral
Home. No services are planned at this time. Mr. Baltosser was born Oct. 25,
1914, in Fruita, Colo. He was the son of Henry Baltosser and Margaret Willcox.
Mr. Baltosser married Willa Onita Harris on Dec. 24, 1942, in Hobart, Okla. He
is survived by his wife of 72 years, Onita; one son, William Henry Baltosser,
and his wife, Ginger, of Little Rock, Ark.; a granddaughter, Dianna Baltosser of
Seattle; one brother, Robert W. Baltosser of Park Hill, Okla.; one niece, April
Meadows, and her husband, Bart; and a sister-in-law, Dixie High of Edmond, Okla.
Mr. Baltosser was preceded in death by his parents. He grew up in Farmington and
attended schools there. He attended college in Colorado and graduated in 1948
from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in geology. Mr. Baltosser served
in the U.S. Air Force in 1941. After the service, he went to work for Robert H.
Ray Exploration in Houston as a party chief in charge of the survey crews. In
1945, the couple moved to Santa Rita and for two years he worked for Kennecott
Copper Corp. He and Mrs. Baltosser moved back to Oklahoma, where he completed
his degree in geology. They once again moved to Grant County and he worked for
Kennecott until his retirement. Mr. Baltosser was past master of Masonic Lodge
No. 44 in Santa Rita. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his
family. He will truly be missed by his family and all of his many friends.

BENCOMO: Rosa Bencomo, 78, of Bayard died Sunday at Hillcrest Hospital. Rosary
services were held Monday at the Curtis Mortuary chapel Mass was said at the
Bayard Catholic Church Tuesday burial following In the Hurley Cemetery.
Survivors are three sons, two daughters, 29 grandchildren and 27 great
grandchildren. The deceased was a long-time resident of Bayard.
BANGERT: Lawrence C. Bangert, 57, who for the past nine years was post master at
Fort Bayard, died at his home there last Saturday. He was well known in the
community and was a member of the Silver City Lodge of Masons and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cox
Mortuary chapel, the Rev. Gary J. Kamerling, pastor of the Presbyterian Church,
officiating. Burial was in the Fort Bayard cemetery, with Masonic graveside
ritualistic rites. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Pauline Bangert, two sons,
Lawrence, Jr. Redondo Beach Calif., and Thomas, Kansas City, MO.; two daughters,
Miss Mabel Bangert, Fort Bayard, and Mrs. Florence Spear, Roselle Park, New
Jersey, and four grandchildren.
BANKS: Mrs. Gertrude Banks, mother of Mrs. Frank G. Woodruff of Hurley, died
Monday in St. Joseph’s hospital Hancock, Mich. Mrs. Banks was 88.
A native of Houghton Mich. Mrs. Banks was the widow of George H. Banks, who died
in 1952. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Woodruff, are a son, Robert Banks,
Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Louis Kirchner, Detroit, Mrs. Frank Bush,
Constantine, Mich., and Mrs. Alvin Brodeur Hancock; 17 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 am Thursday in Trinity
Episcopal Church, Bloughton, Mich., under the direction of Hillside Mortuary.
Burial was in Bloughton, where Mrs. Banks was a life-long resident. Mr. and Mrs.
Woodruff left immediately by plane to attend the funeral services.
BARAJAS: Mrs. Michael G Barajas, 8l, a former resident of Central, passed away
Thursday in Phoenix, Ariz. Mrs. Barajas is survived by a son, Mike Barajas, 7
daughters, Carmen Barajas, Elisa Lardizbal, Concha Garcia, Socorro Rivera, Mary
Arvey, Josephine Enriquez, Gloria Silva, 30 grandchildren and 44 great
grandchildren, Rosary recitation was November, 18 at the Curtis-Bright Funeral
Chapel. Funeral Mass was at 10 am. November 19 at the Santa Clara Catholic
Church with Rev. Fr. Paul Ragazinskas conducting both services. Burial followed
in the Hanover Cemetery.
BARAJAS: Ramon Barajas, 20, of Santa Rita, was killed late Sunday night in a
two-car highway collision on State Road 358 two miles west of Santa Rita. Driver
of the other car involved in the crash, Eddie Moreno, 24, also of Santa Rita,
was not injured. The accident was the seventh highway fatality In Grant County
this year. The accident was investigated by State Patrolman Billy Miller and
Deputy Sheriff Arthur Nelson. The victim suffered a crushed skull and multiple
injuries. Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at the Santa Rita Catholic
church1 followed by mass at 9 am. Wednesday. Burial took place in the Hanover
cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Cox Mortuary. Survivors are
his parents, Mr.and Mrs. Elias Barajas of Santa Rita; a brother, Mike; six
sisters, Carmen Barajas, Mrs. Joe Lardizbal, Mrs. Marcus Garcia, Mrs. Abe
Rivera, Mrs. Louis Avery, and Mrs. Jesus Enrique.
BARAJAS: Elias P. Barajas, 86, died at Hillcrest Hospital, Tuesday, October 8
following an extended illness. Mr. Barajas was a native of Jalisco, Mexico and
had lived in Grant County for the past 49 years. He worked for Kennecott Copper
Corporation as a brick and stonemason and retired in 1957 after 10 years of
service. He is survived by his wife, Micaela of Central; seven daughters, Mrs.
Joe M. Lardizabal, Mrs. Abe Rivera, and Mrs. Nicho Silva of Hurley, Mrs. Marcos
Garcia and Mrs. Jesus Enriquez of Central, Mrs. Louis Arvey of Arenas Valley,
and Mrs. Carmen Barajas of Phoenix, AZ.; one son, Mike Barajas of Central.
BARAJAS: Patricia Eileen P ‘Trish” Barajas, 32, born Feb. 15, 1964, passed away
Friday peacefully at her home in Rancho De Taos after an extended courageous
battle with breast cancer. She was born in St. Louis, and moved to Phoenix in
1965 and to Silver City in 1975. She attended St. Mary’s Academy, Stout
Elementary and La Plata Junior High School, and graduated from Silver High
School in 1982. She was on the Silver Sharks Swim Team and was a member of St.
Francis Newman Center and the “search’ youth group there. After high school, she
moved around between Arizona and California. In 1988, she settled in Taos. There
she was employed at Friday Motors, and later as an office manager for a
veterinarian. She is survived by her husband, Anthony “Tony” Barajas, and her
daughter, Brianna Marie Barajas, of Rancho De Taos; her parents, Gus and Pat
Elgin of Silver City; a brother, Michael of Silver City; her sisters, LeAnn of
Tucson, Ariz., and Kathy Toney, and a nephew, Wayne Toney, and a niece, Erin
Toney, all of Silver City; an aunt and uncle, Pat and William Gammon, and two
cousins, all of Houston; and many members of the Barajas family. Mrs. Barajas
touched so many hearts with her kind, generous, fun-loving~ ways, and will be
deeply missed. She will be remembered for her laughter and love of life.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of her family members and friends whose lives
will never be the same without her. A Mass will be celebrated at St.Francis
Catholic Church in Rancho Dc Taos on Wednesday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers,

BARBA: Emilia Lucero Barba, 85, died Thursday morning in Fort Bayard. Mrs. Barba
was born in Georgetown and had been a lifelong resident of Grant County. She was
a communicant of Santa C1ara Catholic Church. Many nieces and nephews survive
Mrs. Barba. Rosary recitation will be held at 7 pm. Monday at the Wheeler
Funeral Home chapel and Mass of the Resurrection will he Celebrated at 10 a.m.
Tuesday in the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central with the Rev, Paul
Ragazinskas officiating. Interment will follow in the Hanover Cemetery.

BARBA: Funeral services will be held this morning at the Santa Clara Catholic
Church, Central, for Juan G. Barba, 77, retired Kennecott employee who died at
his home Tuesday. A native of Sabinal, Mexico, he had lived at Central three
years prior to his death. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Emilia Barba,
Central; two brothers, Rumaldo Madrid, Benson, Ariz., and Pedro Barba, of
Palomas, Mexico.
Rev. Felix Sheridan will officiate at the funeral mass at 10 a.m., with burial
in the Central Cemetery under the direction of Curtis Mortuary.
BARBER: Milton W. Barber, 70, of Santa Rita, a retired employee of Chino Mines,
died at 10:45 Tuesday night in an El Paso Hospital. He had lived at Santa Rita
since 1924 and was well known in the mining area. Members of the family were
with him when he passed away. Surviving are his wife, a son, Charles Barber, and
two daughters, Mrs. William Humble and Mrs. Charles Thurber. Funeral
arrangements are pending at the Cox Mortuary.
BARBER: Mrs. Annie H. Barber, 88, died Monday, July 24 at Hillcrest Hospital.
Mrs. Barber was a native of Dallas, Texas. She is survived by three daughters,
Mrs. Myrtle Humble of Central, Mrs. Hazel Thurber of Silver City, Mrs. Margaret
Lubra of Los Angles, Calif., two sons, Milton Barber, Jr., of London, England,
George Barber of Jerome, Michigan, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and
a brother, Frank Hudson of Truth or Consequences. Funeral services were at 10
a.m. Thursday, July 27 in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel with Mr. David Strain
officiating. Burial followed in the Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lonnie
Morrison, Gene Myers, Dewey McLehaney, Pete Cody, Bill Frazier and Pat Humble.

BARBOZA: Rogelio S. Barboza, 42, a Deming resident, passed away Tuesday, June 9,
at Thomason Hospital in El Paso, Texas. The prayer vigil will be held this

be celebrated Friday at noon at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Alfred

BARD: William H. Bard, 67, a resident of Silver City for 45 years, died Tuesday
in a Silver City rest home, following a long illness. Mr. Bard was widely known
as a civil engineer and U. S. deputy mineral surveyor He served under five
mayors as city engineer and was the engineer who made the initial survey and
completed plans for Silver City’s first Concrete Paving project under the first
term of the late Mayor Frank Vesely. He also had mining interest in Grant
County. Surviving are a brother, Arthur Bard of El Paso; a sister, Mrs. Ruth
Cummings, Tacoma, Wash., and his mother, Mrs. Estella J Bard of Evanston, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Curtis Mortuary chapel,
Conducted by the Silver City Lodge of Elks. The Rev. C. M, Henderson of the
Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, will conduct committal rites at the

BARELA: Adolfo “Tony” Barela, 72, a resident of Patagonia, Ariz., entered into
eternal rest Wednesday, March 1.1, at his residence. He was born May 28, 1926,
in Central, now Santa Clara, to Teodoro and Alvina Hinojosa Barela. He was a
teacher and administrator with Patagonia Union High School and retired after 35
years of service, He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Calling hours
will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Baca’s Funeral Chapels with the prayer vigil
starting at 7.
STOCKMAN: Boyd Stockman died March 10, at Gila Regional Medical Center.
Cremation has taken place with Baca’s Mimbres Crematorium. Inurnment of cremains
will take place privately. Mr. Stockman was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Redrock, to
Ira and Florence Nicholes Stockman. He earned a living by being a stuntman in
the movie industry and then later for TV series. Survivors include two
daughters, Carol Williams and her husband, Gilbert, of Denver City, Texas, and
Melva Hutton of Hemet, Calif.; eight grandchildren, including James Joseph
Stockman and Stephanie Rose Stockman of Lordsburg; nine great-grandchildren; 12

Santa Rita hospital last Friday evening. She was born at Mimbres in February
1892. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mike
Fernandez, of Bayard, Miss Angela and Miss Delfina Barela, both of Hanover, two
sisters, Mrs. Juan Martinez of Deming, and Mrs. Avangelisto Martinez of Hanover,
five brothers in California and seven grandchildren. Mass will be held at the
Hanover Catholic church Tuesday evening with the Rev Fr. Francis Smerke
officiating. Burial will be in the Hanover cemetery. Cox mortuary is in charge.
BARELA: Death an Sunday claimed Bartolo P. Barela, 64, a resident of Grant
County for 33 years. He was a retired employee of the Empire Zinc Co at Hanover.
He is survived by three sons, Crespin, Francisco and Feliciano and three
daughters, Angelita, Delfina and Mrs. Mike Hernandez, a sister and nine
grandchildren.

BARELA; George S. Barela, 61, died Thursday morning at his residence in Silver
City. Mr. Barela was born in Silver City and had been a lifelong resident of
Silver City. He attended the Silver City schools and Western New Mexico
University Served in the U S Army as a paratrooper in the 101st airborne
division during WW II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He served two
terms as Grant county commissioner and was instrumental in the construction of
the Grant County airport. He also served with the Grant County Sheriff’s
department. For the past twelve years he was known to many, as he was an
insurance agent for Mountain States Life insurance Co. He was a charter member
and past governor of the Moose Lodge in Silver City. He coached Silver City
Little League baseball for several years always enjoying working with young
people. His other hobbies were woodworking, hunting and fishing. Mr. Barela is
survived by his wife Helton Barela of Silver City; two sons David George Barela
of Albuquerque and James H Barela of Silver city; one sister, Lupe B Merrick of
Tucson; his mother, Ester S Barela of Silver City; one nephew George Holguin of
Tucson; one niece Genevieve Stiller of Tucson; and nine great nieces and
nephews. Rosary recitation will be held at 7pm this evening in the Wheeler
chapel and Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 10am Saturday At St
Vincent de Paul catholic church with Monsignor James Milano officiating.

BARELA: Maria R. Barela, 85, of Santa Clara entered eternal life Thursday, April
20, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. She has now joined her loving husband, Carlos
Barela, in the heavenly kingdom of God. She also joins her parents, Jose and
Candlaria Rodriguez; her brothers, Ben, Philip, Roman, Jose and Fernando
Rodriguez; and sisters, Nicanora Rodriguez and Concha Turrey, in heaven.
Visitation will be held today at 5 in the evening at Baca's Funeral Chapels with
the prayer vigil at 6. The Santa Clara Funeral Ministry will lead in the rosary.
The Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 in the morning at
Santa Clara Catholic Church with Father Michael Lindsay officiating. Concluding
service and interment will follow at the Hurley Cemetery. She was born May 20,
1914, in Dona Ana and moved in her early years to Fort Bayard. Mrs. Barela took
piano lessons and eventually took the job of organist at the Santa Clara
Catholic Church, where she continued on for 64 years. Between those years, she
married Carlos Barela and raised four children, Rita, Carmen, Lorenzo and
Willie. Her life revolved around her family and her church. Mrs. Barela was a
member of the Order of Martha’s, Altar Society, the Santa Clara Choir and the
Cursillistas. She was an active member of the Rosary Makers, and in her younger
days she was also active in the Community Election. She will be remembered for
her kindness and generosity, and for her trusting nature. Most of all, she will
be remembered for her mischievous nature and sense of humor. She is survived by
two sons, Lorenzo Barela and his wife, Mary Ann, of Mammoth, Ariz., and G.A.
"Willie" Barela and his wife, Lupe, of Moreno, Calif.; two daughters, Rita R.
Barela of Santa Clara, and Carmen Benavidez, also of Santa Clara; 27
grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

will be in Shakespeare Cemetery in Lordsburg. Mr. Barela was born Oct. 2, 1928,
in Valdon, N.M. He was the son of Patricio H. Barela and Juana Lopez Barela. He
was married to Mary Jane Herr. Mr. Barela is survived by his wife; one daughter,
Dora Smith of Lordsburg; and three sons, Fred Barela of Alamo, and Mariano
Barela Jr. and Patrick Barela, both of Lordsburg. He is also survived by seven
grandchildren, Clarky Smith of Lordsburg, Destinee Camacho of Pensacola, Fla.,
Bianca, Mikhail and Israel Barela of Lordsburg, and Clarissa and Patrick Charles
Barela of Lordsburg; one great-grandson, Lonnie Camacho III of Pensacola; two
sisters, Ramona Baisa of Lordsburg and Nellie Drew of Phoenix and one brother,
Jesus Barela of Phoenix. Mr. Barela served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
conflict. He worked at Phelps Dodge as a welder before he retired. Pallbearers

BARELA: Mrs. Alvina H. Barela 49 died Wednesday, June 9 at her home Central and
had lived there, all her life. She formerly was a staff member at Fort Bayard.
Rosary was held Thursday night at the Cox Mortuary chapel and mass was Friday
morning at the Santa Clara Catholic church in Central and burial was in the
Central cemetery. The Rev. Fr. Ban Den Boogaard had charge of the services. Mrs.
Barela is survived by her husband, Teodoro P. Barela; one son, Aldolfo; five
daughters, Miss Delfina Barela, Mrs. Ernelinda Marquez and Mrs. Herminia
Mitchell, all of Central; Mrs. Leonila Melendrez, Fort Bayard and Mrs. Estill
Vega, Silver City; eight grand-children and two sisters.
BARELA:Olivia Estela “Stella’ Barela was born in Santa Clara, where she grew up
with her loving family. She worked as a nurse aide with home health and she
enjoyed singing and dancing. She was a devout St. Vincent de Paul parishioner.
She sang in the choir and was a member of the Guadalupanas. Ms. Barela loved
being with her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother and
aunt. She was preceded in death by her first-horn daughter Christina Vega and
her only brother Adolfo Barela. She is survived by her four sons, Harry Vega and
his wife, Rosa, of Silver City, Dennis Vega of Silver City, Richard Vega and his
wife, Sonya of Silver City, and Arthur L. Vega and his wife Vicky, of Silver
City. A daughter Sheila Varela of Silver City: four sisters, Minnie Mitchell and
her husband, Jack, of Tucson, Ariz., Erma Marquez of Tucson, Leona Melendrez and
her, husband, Mike, of Silver. City, and Delfie Madrid, and her husband, Leo, of
Tucson; a sister-in-law, Dora Barela of Patagonia, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren: one
great-grandson: and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-7
Wednesday evening with the prayer vigil following at 7 at Baca’s Funeral
Chapels. Deacon Johnnie Perez will officiate. The funeral liturgy will be
celebrated Thursday morning at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father
Rod Nichols officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at St.
Vincent tie Paul Catholic Cemetery. Pall hearers, will he her sons. Harry,
Dennis. Richard and Arthur and Jason and Rick Vega Jr. Honorary. Pall hearers
are Ray Olivas and Mike Melendrez. Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral

BARELA: Teodoro P. Barela, 62, a resident of Central for 52 years, died Sunday
at Tucson. He was a retired employee of the American melting & Refining Co.
Surviving are a son, Adolfo Barela, of Central; five sisters, Mrs. Minnie
Mitchell; Mrs. Irma Marquez, Mrs. Lena Melendrez, all of Tucson; Mrs. Estella
Vega. Silver City arid Mrs. Delfina Lucero, Central. Rosary services were held
Wednesday morning at the Curtis mortuary chapel, followed by mass at 9:30 a.m.
today at the Central Catholic Church, the Rev.Kaslmfr Pefraukas officiating.
Burial was in the Catholic cemetery in Central.
BARELA: Carlos C. Barela, 76, a longtime resident of Central, entered life
eternal Tuesday at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 1, 1916, in
Dona Ana and was a member of Santa Clara Roman Catholic Church in Central. Mr.
Barela was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Steelworkers Union Local 890.
He was active in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression. Calling
hours will be from 2-5 p.m. Thursday at Baca's Funeral Chapels. The rosary will
be recited at Santa Clara Catholic Church Thursday evening at 7. Mass of the
Christian burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 10:30 at Santa Clara
Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Lindsay officiating. Interment will follow at
Hurley Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. Survivors include his wife,
Maria Barela of Central; two sons, Lorenzo Barela and his wife, Mary Ann, of
Mammoth, Ariz., and Willie Barela and his wife, Lupe, of Moreno Valley, Calif.;
two daughters, Rita Barela of Central, and Carmen Benavidez and her husband,
Robert M. Benavidez, of Silver City; a brother, Daniel Barela of Albuquerque;
three sisters, Amalia Espinoza, Elisa Bryon and Margret Acevez, all of Las
Cruces; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. Casket bearers will be Lorenzo Barela Jr., Edward
Barela, Braulio Benavidez, Gabriel "Flint" Benavidez, John Robert Benavidez Jr.
and Tony Savorillo. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
BARELA: Elisa M. Barela, 57, a resident of Safford, Ariz., died Wednesday
morning in Mount Graham Community Hospital in Safford. She was born June 2, 1931
in Morenci, Ariz., and retired in Safford in 1971 from Santa Fe Springs, Calif.,
where she worked as a seamstress for 20 years. Funeral services have been
scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2 in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.
Concluding services will follow in Fort Bayard National Cemetery with the Rev.
Bill Mayer officiating. Survivors include a brother, David Mena of Clifton,
Ariz.; two sisters, Vicenta Membrila of Thatcher, Ariz., and Juanita Andazola of
Clifton; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Phillip M. Barela, in 1989 and a brother, Joe Mena, in 1988. Casket
bearers will be Michael Membrila, David and Virgil Mena, John G. Caballero,
Peter Andazola and Guadalupe Fernandez. Serving as honorary bearers will be
Emilio Membrila and Frank Andazola Sr. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest
Funeral Chapels.
BARELA: Esther S. Barela, 88, died Tuesday in Tucson, Ariz. She was a longtime
resident of this area, was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,
was a past choir director and was active in the local Democratic Party. She is
survived by her daughter, Lupe B. Merrick of Tucson; one granddaughter,
Genevieve A. Stiller of Tucson; and seven grandsons, George E. Holguin of
Tucson, David George Barela of Albuquerque, James H. Barela of Silver City, and
Henry Barela Jr., James Barela, Randall Barela and Melvin Barela, all originally
of Silver City; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was
preceded in death by her two sons, Henry S. Barela and George S. Barela. Rosary
recitation will be held at 7:30 tonight in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home chapel
with Deacon Bill Holguin officiating. Mass of the Resurrection will be
celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with
the Rev. Richard Lynch officiating. Burial will follow in the Catholic Cemetery.
